I remember well, mum and I used to get weighed there if we were shopping.  Don't remember the woman in the photo, sure it was someone much fatter. I wonder what happened to the scales. I liked the Norfolk Market Hall. Used to collect stamps and Dad bought me some most weeks. He would then take me for pie and peas, really old place  just inside and had wooden booths. Always seemed full.

I left Sheffield 25 years ago. Lived in Spain for 12 years, loved it but changed a lot over the years and became overbuilt. Moved back to Surrey as some family including Grandchildren there. Now living more rural on the South Downs close to Arundel, I can see the castle across the fields and be on the coast in 20 minutes.
Â
I was in Sheffield last week, only the second time since leaving. Traffic seemed horrendous and city centre disorganised, most people were speaking other languages. I realised how much I have changed as everyone I know still seems to be in a time warp, like stuck in the eighties. I have many happy memories of Sheffield but wouldn't want to return. Although I wouldn't want to live in any City again, I like village life.

Not many will remember the site of spare ground at the bottom ofBroughton lane opposite the brightside & carbrook milk dept.
They had fairs on this site about 1950
Â
The largest fairground around there was called the Pheasant ground. Could also be approached from Attercliffe Common close to the Pheasant pub and opposite the Carbrook Hall. Bertram Mills circus used to be there too. There were blocks of old air raid shelters at the back of the ground, still had the iron frames for beds.

All the media is biased, we ultimately believe what suits our view. Just read articles in the Guardian and the Mail. Correct news different views.
Â
Most newspapers are operating on a shoestring now. Journalists on zero hours, even the Guardian. Reuters has a news section based in India. Has covered some sports events from there from checking on the Internet in the office:D
Â
I agree about quotes, so easy to be taken out of context.

It is outdated. Still sad though to see it go.

Some meanies on here. Can't recognise good news:rolleyes:
-
Ah yes, the usual brexit voter disdain for 'experts'. After all, they've merely studied a subject for many years and been recognised as being extremely good at it, what do they know.Â
Well most of the so called Experts have been wrong so far...many of them actually admitting it.
-
I notice that just as the Lords are debating Brexit Tony Blair sticks his oar in and now more scare stories seem to be emerging especially from Junker. This just seems to me an attempt to try and influence the Brexit debates and given the timing seems a bit out of order.Â

If all this from him is true then what would happen if we then refuse to pay anything? after all these commitments of ours are not bound by law. Is this just a measure of how scared the EU are of the consequences of the UK leaving them?
Â
The BBC are back in campaign mode. All day yesterday they were rolling out "experts" giving the usual scaremongering stats showing how worse off we will be. Usual biased discussions with all supporting remain.

No. It isn't. There's nothing wrong with making an arrangement on tariffs and market access. There's something very wrong with submitting our entire nation to a foreign regulatory or legal regime.Â

Boris Johnson said outright that we would leave the single market on national television. So did Gove and Cameron and Stuart and many others.
A few minor figures equivocating on the matter cannot balance this.
Â
Yes and they are on YouTube, Cameron looking straight into the camera saying voting leave means leaving the single market. Osborne also. Seems as if it is the remainers who didn't understand what they were voting for:rolleyes:

Many people are very gullible.

Smith went against the wishes of the vast majority of her constituents and may well find herself picking up her p45 at the next general election. MP`s are supposed to work on behalf of their constituents , not against them.Â
Smith`s ward voted overwhelmingly to LEAVE the eu . Hopefully this woman will be out on her ear at the GE.

What it says is that they ( myself included ) have had enough of mass immigration and meddling from the suits in Brussels, and our MP`s ignoring our concerns .
Â
Well said!

A big chunk of the 15 billion overseas aid budget could be diverted for training.

Remember so many mentioned. OH still has a silk dressing gown from Hornes, that's because he hardly wears it:)
Â
I used to go to George France for my hair do and meet up with friends in the Sidewalk coffee bar, I remember it as being very small and dark.
Â
Does anyone remember Lornas pie shop on Attercliffe Common? She had big warts on her face. Next door was a horse meat shop.
Â
Sad so many individual shops have gone.
-
The last time I was there it was just one small building Crystal Peaks. Saw a few films there and there was an good Indian restaurant next door. It Used to get full. I probably wouldn't recognise it now.

I always though Sheffield council was very pro concrete and preferred little ornamental trees....the ones that get vandalised. I am living in a West Sussex village and most mature trees need planning permission even for a slight topping. Many are well over a hundred years old.

If the Roma can get houses why can't these homeless:huh: also there seems to be enough bleeding hearted liberals to house them.
-
How many of the people saying "take someone in, have got "someone"living in their home?!,Â
Good point....and what about all those rich luvvies, the Celebs who were going to take in refugees:roll:

looks like greece will be out next http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/02/07/eu-faces-crisis-imf-warns-greek-debts-explosive-path/ unless the eu keeps throwing money at them i hope the remoaners will say thank you for brexit when it all goes belly up:hihi:Â
We have been hearing of Greek problems for years and the EU keeps kicking the can down the road for another 6 months. Their debt to GDP is predicted to hit over 200% in a few years. Italy in trouble too and Brussels has ordered Spain for more austerity.
-
Definitely not and I wouldn't advise anyone else to. I know someone who did with dreadful consequences. Authorities are bad at even basic checks and the majority of homeless have alcohol, substance abuse or general mental problems. If you feel the need to wear a hair shirt give a generous sum to an appropriate charity.
-
Sad, there are so few historic old buildings left in Sheffield. Hard to believe it is not listed.
-
see they were all back in town today , would have thought they would be better off protesting the council about how they covered up a paedophile and let him retire on an enhanced pension , but no lets protest about something that's happening thousands of miles away and will achieve nothingÂ
Absolutely agree. Don't like Trump but I find it impossible to get on the outrage bus for another country. After all a majority support him and any country has a right to control it's own borders.

I think I would be moved along rather quickly as it wouldn't be a trendy protest and im not talking about my attireÂ
Do you mean you don't have coloured hair:hihi:
-
The most shocking thing is that it has been going on for decades. Was happening when I was in Sheffield over 25 years ago.
-
Why do people read the biased Guardian? Except to look for overpaid public sector jobs.
Â
The Times is ok. Plenty of in depth reading. A bit biased towards EU but more balanced than FT and Guardian.

She is a remainer. She campaigned for remain. She has simply accepted our decision. This was always a concern, but the leave side generally argued that pragmatism will likely win through.
Â
Teresa May was a remainer but she didn't campaign, sort of a reluctant remainer.
Does anyone remember the sherbert squares made by Carters, Attercliffe
in Sheffield History & Expats
Posted
I worked at Carters when I left school. Was on the top floor, the desks were very high, like something out of a Scrooge movie.  Worked updating huge ledgers which weighed a ton. Was all the Salesmen  records.  The Directors, mainly family, think one was Justin Carter, used  to call on a buzzer. I plodded down a corridor and was told  which ledgers they wanted to view. Sometimes as many as three and I could hardly carry them. The office boss was Miss Dubin, looked about 70 and really obnoxious. Girls who I worked with were nice but can't remember names as I only stayed a few months.
Â
one part of the office had just gone computerised. The first Hollerith machines which were huge, looked like a factory. Â Used to buy a lot of stuff as we got a discount. I liked the sherbet, humbugs etc. Grandmother used to take Carters little liver pills. I remember having to go into parts where stuff was made in huge vats.
Â
does the place still exist?
