  1. Was his wife called Annie and their son called Dennis?
  2. I bought a Yamaha XS 400 from there around 1980 for 500 pounds, I really wanted the Triumph Bonneville T140 US Special, but that was 1700 pounds and there was no way I could afford that as an apprentice painter and decorator. 30 years and 8 Jap bikes later I finally bought myself a new Bonneville and I love it.
  3. When I lived in England I couldn’t afford a car so me and the wife went everywhere on a bike, work, shopping, day trips to Brid, etc. In the early eighties one of the bikes we owned was a Suzuki SB200, two stroke twin with drum brakes. It wasn’t too bad as a one up commuter around town but with two of us on it (neither of us were light weights) and especially with shopping bags as well it was hit and miss if the brakes would stop us, sometimes you could feel the front brake cable stretching and I remember closing my eyes and hoping for the best on at least one occasion. Great days though.
  4. Further to my last post. I've lived, worked, visited most cities in Australia and many in England and Sheffield is no worse than any of them and better than some. But the biggest differance I found on my recent return was how friendly Sheffield people were. All the ones I met any way, from shop workers to passangers on the busses and barmaids in the many fantastic pubs that we visited. Thanks Sheffield for a memorable two weeks, (my lads kept asking why I ever left). PS I think I meant Winter Garden not Summer Garden!
  5. In July I also returned to Sheffield for a couple of weeks, after 27 years in Perth, Australia. I didn't really want to go but I'd been putting it off for a while and my adult sons were going with me. We went into the city on our first day and I couldn't believe how good it was, even though most of the great pubs I'd told them about had closed. So we ended up going into the Queens Head, but that had changed on the inside since last time I went in, but the outside looked great. Fargate and High St still looked good as did the top of the moore. The Summer Garden and area where the elephant house used to be was fantastic. On our second trip into town we went into Castle Market, it's not as lively or busy as I remembered it and it definately looked tired, but what was there was good, one of my sons is a chef and he loved the fresh food area, he couldn't believe how cheap it was. The public transport is fantastic, frequent, clean, graffiti free and you don't get harrassed by drunked aboriginees. Over all we had a graet holiday, though I was glad to get back home.
  6. I used to live on Addison Rd in Firth Park and the house had a crack running from the gutters down to the top of the side door as a result of an incendry bomb landing at the top of Addison Rd during an air raid. Some of the houses had air raid shelters in the back gardens but some people just used the kitchen pantry under the stars.
  7. I grew up around Firvale, living on Earl Marshal Rd until I got married then we bought a house on Addison Rd. The Cannon Hall pub was the centre of the universe for me and my brother for many years, I think we must have bought that pool table a hundred times over. I recently returned to the area with my kids, hoping to get a couple of pints in at the Cannon Hall, devistated I was. At least the shops were still open even if they had changed hands. I didn't recognise any one I knew from back in the 70s - 80s though.
  8. In 1979 I got my first road bike it was an EMZ Simpson 50cc from a shop at Handsworth. Since then I've had a CZ 175 trail, Yamaha RS200, Yamaha XS400, Suzuki SB200, Honda CB750, another Yamaha XS400, HondaVF1000F, Kawasaki KLR 650 and now I'm riding a Honda CBR1000F. The last five I've owned since living in Australia, where I can ride all year around without getting too cold and no chance of black ice or snow, (apart from the one year I spent living in the Victorian Alpine region). I've also owned three bush bashers. Got to go, cause I'm going for a ride now, think I'll take the long way home.
  9. Hi Biscuit; I left in the 5th year, and I remember you, we were in the same physics class. I used to hang around with Kev Wade, (he was best man at my wedding). Whilst I was in Sheffield I went down Earl Marshal Road a couple of times (I used to live just past the flats at the top end), I've got to say that the area hasn't improved at all. I took my kids around the area just to show them one of the reasons I left.
  10. I left Earl Marshal in 1979 and I've just been back to Sheffield for the first time in 19 years. I went to look at the old school and noticed that Owler Lane school had been knocked down pity they didn't knock down the rest of it down. I can't say that I have any realy good memories from that time as I couldn't wait to leave school. Whilst I was around the area I didn't notice any familiar faces and worst of all the Cannon Hall pub had been knocked down so I couldn't even have a beer.
