  3. http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=1084&ArticleID=1913284 FARE prices for committed bus users are being reduced or frozen in many parts of South Yorkshire as the county's biggest public transport operator tries to encourage more passengers back on to public transport. First was heavily criticised for pushing up prices during 2005 and as a result pledged that fares would not go up during this year. While the company has announced it is to increase some fares from early in the New Year, it is also freezing the prices of some tickets aimed at encouraging commuters and other travellers to make better use of buses. Numbers of passengers using public transport in the county have been declining since deregulation in the 1980s ended the subsidies which paid for cheap bus fares in the region. First insist they have been working hard to improve the quality of their services, introducing new buses on many routes and improving reliability. Now they have taken action to encourage people to use buses more often by offering price cuts on some long-term tickets and freezing the cost to other passengers. First spokesman Brandon Jones said there were now signs that the action taken to halt the decline in public transport use was working, with the reduction in passenger numbers slowing down. A trial recently in Doncaster involved the reduction of a weekly ticket for the town from £15 to £13 and proved so successful it has been adopted permanently and extended to cover Rotherham. In Sheffield the same ticket will remain at £15 to cover the extra distances involved in citywide travel, but the price will be frozen when standard rates go up in January. The company's standard tariffs will rise by 10p, but in Sheffield customers will also be able to avoid that increase by booking newly introduced return tickets, which will freeze prices at their current level for passengers who book both trips on one ticket. Mr Jones added: "We have not looked at our fares and considered a general price increase but looked at individual prices and tickets in a smart way – we looked at how we can grow the market while still covering our costs. "Across South Yorkshire some products like weekly tickets are coming down. Normal adult single fares are increasing by 10 pence, but we are hoping to encourage people to choose saver products, which speeds up boarding times. "We think we have got a good balance between increasing some prices and introducing discounts which will help us to grow the market. "We are starting to see improvements in the passenger base, reducing the decline, and I believe that by reducing prices some customers will see that is an advantage." Figures compiled nationally show the costs of running buses have increased by around seven per cent in the last six months alone. However, the move to increase some fares have been criticised by the Liberal Democrat party in Sheffield. They point out that some tickets will go up by as much as 15 per cent, though First stress that changes to their system mean more cost effective alternatives are available to most passengers. Coun Sylvia Dunkley, the shadow cabinet member for transport, said: "These latest hikes, of which the highest is nearly 15 per cent, will not be welcomed by bus users. "It will lead to even more people turning away from public transport which in turn will lead to greater congestion. This will be to the detriment of everyone using Sheffield's transport network." I would say this is more to the truth about the bus fare changes, as if you get a new return bus fares have not rises an tall, except the first day/week/month etc, but they have fallen by upto £7 in rotherham and doncaster.
