  1. are you thinking of Gention (Ithink that is how it's spelt) Violet.
  2. Thanks for that cat. I remember her now. Thank goodness someone remembers the council yard, I thought I was imaging it, I do remember Trevor Green taking me to se a dead cat, full of magots, in there. Yes Jean I remember Josephine Harris, she was of school for quite a while, and she used to have funny turns!, because of the head injuries she had. Another name that springs to mind is Pat Byne. Gwen's dad taught my dad to drive and we were great friends for quite a while then we lost touch, I think her mum died. I did see the photo, I got moved up a class in the 3rd year for some reason.
  3. cat mentioned Mr. Clifford,He married one of the other teachers who was she? I know I was in his class twice, we was such a rowdy lot!!!! he asked for our class, and I must admit he was the best teacher for us. Did anyone remember the yard at the top of Dunmow road? some of the prefabs backed on to it. Talking of prefabs does anyone remember Gwen Sigdley. Her dad was a miner I think
  4. Hi just read about the Zepplin raid on Sheffield. There was a Memorial to it on (I think )Steverson road Attercliffe. any way it's the road that comes out by the canal basin.
  5. Hi all. Glad you had a good reunion,I'm sorry I missed it. I've just caught up with all the postings. (It's a long story, trying to get my head round a new computer) Piggy Green's horse n cart was mentioned, I can recall having a ride on it, when I was going home from school one day. I think he must have worked for the council, because he went along shoveling the piles of dirt into the cart, that the road sweeper had left. Then he took it to a council yard at the top of Dunmow road. Can anyone else remember that yard? It was a long time ago, some of you wouldn't have even been born. Can you tell me who has been bullied of this site? And does anyone still hear from lalola.
  6. I was talking to mum the other night and she recalled the clothes shop next to the Ball was owned by someone called Headland, does anyone else know. I also can remember "Collins" shop as a newsagents, are they the same Yates who had the papershop between Asher's and Mrs. Lees. Dad always called the area between the dyke and Ball Canary Island, has anyone else heard this. Another name I can recall (but didn't know them) is Onions, they lived opposite Dr. Willies surgery, I think dad used to know them.
  7. Hi Janniem, yes it is me on that photo as I said above I e-mailed it to Skippy.
  8. Hi Tonio, If you look back quite a few post, this is the photo Skippy put on the forum, half the people came from Firs Hill (!) school. I too have all the names.
  9. I was talking to mum the other night, and she agreed with me that one of the butchers was a Neville Asher, and we think he had the shop on the bottom.(Upwell Street.)
  10. Just as you came round the corner from Crown Hill on Carlise street, there used to be about three old houses a girl called Marjorie Ostler lived in one (can you remember her JeanJ) that school photo recalled a few memories.
  11. Hi all, I can't remember the name of the coachbuilders ( I think they only repaired them) but I think Homeric was also there at the same time but only in the lower building. I can remeber there being a load of scrap metal behind a fence(mainly old scissor blanks. I can also remember the dairy that was at the back, Harry Smith took it over after I left, but I knew him before that he used to have premises in Rockingham street behind W.H.Parkin's, (I worked there before Homeric). I think you will find there was two signs painted on the wall, opposite where the houses used to be, one was "Welcome home boys" and the other one was for the Coronation. I can, remember asking my dad about the welcome one and he said about the war.
  12. Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Watch out for the falling down water, and the elbow bending complaint.
  13. Hi Terry sorry to here of your loss, thinking of you.
  14. Hi all, I've just caught up with all the posts. Our computer crashed, we managed to get it revived but it is very poorly still. the mother board is going? Will have to talk nice to Santa. Jeanj, Doreen Rhodes, is Les's sister and the last I heard she was living New Mills way. Someone mentioned the Owen twins, our youngest was on her way back from holiday in America a couple of years ago, she got talking to the lady sat next to her, and it was one of the twins, I can't remember which one now though. the memory isn't what it was. Congratulations on the birth of your grandson Nettie. and congratulations to Janniem she had another nephew last week.
  15. Hi JeanJ, I remember Thirza, but I can't remember were she lived. I did bump into Jean Higgingbottom years ag, but for the life of me I can't remember where. I did meet Janet Yeatman in the Liberal club on Attercliffe over ten year ago and I passed a copy of the class photo on to her. I live on the south coast and although we visit often, I don't usually see many of the old faces. I was in the F2 classes until the third year then I went up to F1, The teacher I remember most was Mr. Clifford. What happened to Christine Shearn, that is another name that has come to mind, Wendy Axleby being another.
  16. Hi Just an interesting thing to add to for future quizes, Jack Asher was married to Ruby, who had the ladies hairdressers on Upwell street about six doors from the butchers. Please correct me Gritman as to the right location. They lived at the top of Wincobank Lane. Wigley's butchers was next door to Lemms, and he lived just below the club on Grimesthorpe road.
  17. Hi Jean J, I'm sorry about getting your in-laws names mixed up. Dick & Ada was mum's nieghbors, when I spoke to mum she told me it was Sam & Ada. I used to go to Diane Wrigley's house a lot, it was actually by the gas works. At Owler Lane I knocked around with Pat Dudley, Valerie West, Monica Thomlin (I think she was part German
  18. Hi JeanJ, I remember going to school with you. I think I was in your class up to the 3rd. year at Owler Lane. If you have read all the posts you will have seen a class photo (4th. year I think. Was your in-laws called Dick & Ada, if so I think they went around with my mum & dad for a while.
