  1. Years ago there was some kind of Mummer's play carried out in the Robin Hood pub at Little M Matlock, sadly now closed. It was always carried out in the Wintertime. I do not know how it came about, whether it was the Gannister Miners in the area who started the tradition or just the local farmers. Many people forget often with the closure of pubs many traditions also disappear as they were the centre of social activities in many areas, although in the case of the Robin Hood pub this tradition had ended some years ago. Maybe someone in the know will give us some more information about this particular Mummers play? Happy Days! PopT
  2. There were one or two private homes who cared for young people including orphans. Their purpose was to educate and give training for youngsters so they could find work. I know of two but I should think there were more in and around Sheffield. One was the House of Help in Paradise Square and another was the Sheffield Boys Home in Broomspring Lane. Some members of my family lived in both of these places. Happy Days???? PopT
  3. When I lived in the area I loved to browse around the Junkarama shop and I still have one or two of the bargain antiques I bought from Eddie Patnick. One day I went down to the shop only to find it was almost empty of stock and the last few items were being loaded into his large van. When I asked why he was closing he told me an American had wlked around the store and made him an offer to buy all his complete stock from all the 3 floors. In one fell swoop he had put himself out of business by selling up. It must have got a good price as he was over the moon with the deal. After that he re-opened a new Junkarama on Derbyshire Lane at Heeley. I remember Bill Beevers in his shop and his nephew who eventually ran it after Bill retired. You could always tell when Bill was in the shop as he used to park his Jaguar car on the shop frontage. I cannot remember his nephew's name but I can remember him going bald and having a moustache and was well into motorbikes. I believe Bill had won the TT race, 3 times and later became a Race Marshal for the race. As Race Marshal he had to ride around the course to check the track before the race. On one occasion he was given a warning for riding too fast whilst riding around. Racing was in his blood and he couldn't resist throttling up whilst going around the course Happy Days! PopT
  4. For years a Sally Army collector has stood outside Sainsbury's shop on Crookes in all weathers. For the past few weeks he has been missing, does anyone know if he is Ok? I know he lived locally as he was a mine of information and a true Christian. I always had a chat with him, I do hope he is OK. PopT

  8. Does anyone know if the Hardy Company had steel or iron melting facilities in Sheffield The reason I ask is that my Grandfather John Thomas Timmins was burned on the face by hot metal. He moved to Woodhouse, Sheffield from West Bromwich circa between 1885-1891. He worked as a Iron Puddler and later as a Blacksmith. I never knew him as I was only 4 years old when he died in 1943. I was told he bought a chip shop on Denby Street with the compensation money he received from the Hardy Patent Pick Company. I never knew whether the accident occurred in West Bromwich or Sheffield I was only told he worked on Spon Lane, the only one I know is in West Bromwich but maybe there was one in Sheffield? Any ideas on how I can research further would be appreciated. Happy Days! PopT

It is Batts Picalilli and is sold in the Lidl Supermarkets for 79p for a 450g jar. Cunninghams you can keep your mush! Happy Days! PopT
  10. I have just bought a tom tom start 60 sat nav but I do not want to fit it on the car windscreen. I also want to remove the unit when I am parked up. Is there a special fitting I can buy that will fit it onto the car dashboard. It seems this model is different to a lot of the other models and I cannot see how I can fit it without a special fitting. Can anyone please advise. Thanking you. PopT
  11. My Great Uncle George Glossop was hired by Buffalo Bill ( William Cody) to transport luggage fro m the station to the Camp sat Owlerton. It is interesting to look at the photos of Buffalo Bill's funeral. Iy was said that the entourage accompaning the hearse was the longest ever known in America. He was buried at the top of a mountain which he owned. I forget anymore detail but I'm sure these will be on the t'internet somewhere for those who are interested. Happy Day's PopT
  12. hi GMarshman Yes we have crossed swords before as you put it. Fancy remembering the death of George V1. I remember the school trips one was a holiday in Flamborough Village where we slept in the school gym, another was a trip to Newton Abbott in Devon staying in a big house overlooking the town. I can also remember a school trip to the Festival of Britain in 1951 and it was great. We slept in one of the deep underground tunnelsClapham North which had been converted into dormitories. We visited the Dome of Discovery, the South Bank Hall and the Skylon as well as many of the exhibition Halls. Since then I have travelled the world and none of my travels have overshadowed my times on the school trip memories. Does anyone else remember any of these school holidays? Happy Days! PopT

  14. We lived on Penistone Road, the main road to the football ground. On Match days my old mum used to stand at the end of the entry and wave to all the coaches, all tooted back or cheered, all looking forward to the game and happy about it. Sadly in later years the police advised her and some other neighbours to stay in doors as they could be hurt by flying bottles or by other missiles thrown from the coaches. This was the death of football as a sport and an enjoyable game as it was in the fifties and before the money & morons took over the game. PopT Happy Days!
  15. Hillsbro, Thanks for that info. The family membbers who worked therre lived in Oakland road and Hunter Road, Hillsbro. The back of the original photos of the works and the saws displaued were written up as John Elsworth & Sons, Hillsbro and so I now know where the works were situated. The family were originally sawmakers in Ecclesfield until they closed their business. Thanks to all who contributed. Happy Days! PopT
  16. I'm currently processing some family pictures taken in Hillsborough 1914 to 1930. Amongst them are pictures of Saw products produced by John Elsworth and Company of Hillsborough. One of the family is holding one of the saws and I do know the family lived in Hillsborough and were sawmakers. Does anyone know where the John Elsworth & Sons Saw Works was in Hillsborough? I've looked in one director and them in Leadmill Road but not in Hillsborough. Happy Days! PopT

One parcel of land was sold to the railway company to build the second railway station and line at the bottom of Ecclesfield. I hope this is of interest.
