  1. Whe I was a kid I remember a blue biplane flying over the Wardsend House every year. I was told it was flown by the son of Oxsprings family when it was his mother's birthday. Maybe someone could enlighten us. Happy Days! PopT
  2. Hi Dave D You mentioned Harry Booth who was a very good friend of mine. Sadly, he died of cancer about 2 years ago. He was one of the best. RIP Harry, well remembered PopT
  3. If we were going to the panto mom would tell everybody we were off to the Fol de Rols! I believe this was a very popular Pierrot Show that was staged on the Beach at Scarborough by an Edwardian entrepreneur George Royle. Happy Days! PopT
  4. Does anyone remember Allen's ice cream. He kept his vans & ice cream making from one of the big houses on Shrewsbury Road. The house will be known to many as Mrs Allen's Bed & Breakfast. Happy Days! PopT
  5. Ron & Beryl were great caterers. Ron was a good cook learning his basics in the Army Catering corps. Every year they put on a great Christmas meal for the local OAP's, each person received a Christmas gift. If anyone couldn't get to the Vic they would pick them up or deliver the meal so they did not miss out. In my eyes they were The Salt of the earth. G-d Bless em! PopT. Happy Days in Owlerton
  6. I am related to the Damms family of Sheffield by marriage through the Glossop family. Does anyone have any info on Edith Damms born in Doncaster in 1917 & died 1965? I was told Edith was adopted but this is uncertain, any information appreciated PopT. Happy Days!

  8. fairyworld 14 There's an office at the rear of the Town Hall where you can fill in a form and order your birth certificate if it is for a Sheffield birth. The staff there are more than helpful, but try and get the correct name spellings and the date before you go, if possible. I hope this helps you. PopT
  9. Great pub, run by a great landlord and landlady. Shameful that is was pulled down leaving another empty piece of ground by the city planners. Popt Happy Days!
  10. There was a bloke who used to run small group tips to the ww1 battlefields from Barnsley. Does anyone know if he still runs them? I'd appreciate any contact details if he still runs the trips. Happy Days! Popt
  11. Hi Carol I have sent you a PM. about the Damms Family. PopT
  12. I rememberthe old fruit & veg market well. Mom used to take me to help carry the bags for her, although I spent most of the time with old man Patnick going through his books. I was told whilst they were pulling the old market down a huge rat ran out of the place and it was found to be 103 years old. When I asked how they knew it was 103 years old they said because it had a date stuck to it's back. Boom! Boom! Happy Days! PopT
  13. Hi Magstherags There is a internet site called, 'Sheffield Soldiers of the Great War' created by Dean Hill the Sheffield Great War Historian. The site lists all aspects of the Great War including War Memorials and Plaques. I do hope this is of use to you and I hope you find what you are looking for. Happy Days! PopT
  14. Hi DennisDay I've often wondered about the old farmhouse that stood next Softley's on Borough Road. Do you remember anything about the place, I'm sure there was a date above the door. Love to know anything about this old place, it's funny how your curiosity is aroused as you get older and yet at the time we just walked past the place hundreds of times without taking real notice. Happy Days! Popt
  15. Shogun Just as a matter of interest, I am currently researching a family who were edge tool makers in Sheffield from the 1560's onwards. They were recorded as Sissersmiths engaged in forging shear, plough and knife blades. This term was used as far back as the Middle Ages. I have put a post on here trying to find out where they lived and worked in Sheffield in the 1700's, in the records it states the area as 'Ead'. I hope this of interest to you. Happy Days! Popt
  16. Can anyone give me an idea where cutlers lived and worked in Sheffield 1700-1780. On some of the records they say, Thomas Briddon de Ead. Is this short for the Moorhead? Most of the family were Hatched Batched and Despatched at St Peters Parish Church. Most appreciate any info. Happy Days! PopT
  17. Afriend of mine Brian Booth lived on there. He used to deliver newspapers in the area. Do you remember him? Happy Days! PopT
  18. Hi Marshman I think you will find the builders were in the classes 3x, 5x and 3y 5y 6y. The Engineers were in 3a, 5a, 6a and 3b, 5b, and 6b. I still have one of my work books from there and if I wasn't in 5x then I must have somoe else's book but then it has my signature in it. The memory hasn't gone yet. I would not have met you at the Tech. as you say I was here before you. Happy Days! Pop T
  19. Hi Marshman Yes I did attend the Central Tech. from 1952 to 1955, I was in the Building Section in classes 3x, 5x & 6x. We probably met up there although my memory fails me. I never attended Lydgate Lane School but my son and daughter went there. Good Memories & Happy Days! PopT
  20. I went to Hillsborough School on Parkside Road. I was there 1944-1952. The walk to the baths was good fun until your mother spotted you whilst she was out shopping and started to call you from across the road, all the lads hated that. I did play football but hated it and still do, don't ask me why. The best thing were the school holiday trips, one year to Newton Abbot in Devon another to Flamborough which was great. We stayed in other schools and slept in the gyms on paliasses. I remember David Thompson who lived near me in Owlerton but he was younger than me. Happy Days! PopT
  21. Have you contacted the Planning & Rates Department? They may have some information tucked away. They should know the sizes of the building for rating purposes and alterations to the building carried out by their inspectors. There should be some records in the Church estates somewhere as the old plans maybe used for building maintenance. These are only two suggestions and I'm afraid they are just ideas not founded on fact but they are worth a try. Good Luck! Do let us know if you are successful. Happy Days! PopT
  22. Happy Christmas Everyone! Thankyou for the best Forum in the UK. Happy Days! PopT
  23. I used to know a Jack Southern who worked at the River Don Steelworks. He was formerly a Rope Splicer but became a Rope inspector responsible for checking the ropes on all the overhead cranes. He served as a commando during WW2 and saw plenty of action. After the war he married a German lady and they lived in the Pitsmoor area. I know this isn't much information but it will give you a lead if needed. Happy Days! PopT
