  1. I am not sure of my facts but I was told the farmhouse owned by the Mardsden family turned it into a beerhouse. The story goes that Samuel wanted a name for the pub and his wife came up with the name The 3 Merry Lads, their s sons were happily playing in the field. When the Redmires Dam was built Marsden and his partner who owned the stone quarry on Selborne Road supplied stone for the building works at the dam. There is another source of information is the lists of private landowners who contributed to the building of Redmires Road, in return for these contributions they were allowed to fence off the moorland which adjoined the road to be converted to farmland. Maybe a local historian or even a member of the Marden family could verify these hearsay stories Happy Days! PopT.
  2. Kidorry I'd forgotten the trick of tucking the corner of the sweat towel under the bridge on the specs. This trick provided two benefits, one it protected the nose being burned by the metal specs and the second was to prtect the open mouth from the searing heat and deadly fumes from the furnace and the loaded steel sampling spoon rod. Happy Days! PopT
  3. Hi Parcher My father was a steel melter for 22yrs before and after the war. He wore a flat cap thick Grandad collarless shirt Thick white cotton sweat towel with square raised design in the weave to soak up sweat Long John underpants and heavy trousers Wool Socks and wooden clogs. Because they had to go home from the steelworks in their dirty clothes they always made an effort to look their best. When home the first job was bathe in the old zinc bath and a chang into fresh clothes. It was important for them to keep clean for health reasons. He wore blue glass nickel silver specs when in front of the furnace, the nose bridge well wrapped with cotton to stop the metal burning the nose, many wore these anti glare specs upside down so there was no contact with the face to stop any burning. Hope this helps Happy Days! Pop
  4. Never had any Whalemeat but i remember the chippy on Beulah Road started using Whale oil in chip pans and it was awful. Subsequently the Queues got longer at Tommy Fryers opposite the bottom of Parkside Road. Happy days! PopT
  5. Hi I have sent you a PM. regarding your Family History. regards PopT
  6. Hi Old Tup Was the butchers Kendalls oppositethe public toilets on Penistone Road, it was next to Balckburn's Yard. This was the shop where Mam got her meat. Does anyone remember their Mam making Fat Cake? That period brought up a load of unusual recipes and foodstuffs but what a time to live through. I often think about our split family through war service and the struggle in daily life and what was it all for? Not So Happy Days! PopT
  7. Do not exclude Loxley and Wisewood cemeteries as my family all lived in Owlerton and were buried in both cemeteries. A lot depends on where people are buried depending if there is a family grave. Many people classed as paupers were buried in other family graves if there was room. There is a website Find a Grave that may help you. Hope this helps. PopT
  8. Chairboy In reply to your question, Where did the name come from? In the days of coaches travelling through the area it was known as Furze Hill, this was after the number of Gorse bushes that grew in the area. Later the name became Firs Hill and Fir Vale. Happy Days! PopT
  9. The mess they have made at the top of Stephen Hill at Crosspool is a real eyesore. To stop vehicles parking on the grass verges the authority has cocreted a row of square timber posts into the verges. To secure these they have concreted them in with a great diameter of concrete. The total effect is terrible and an unnecessary great eyesore. In such an area where the local voluntary group are planting flowers and generally beautifying the area to the great enjoyment of the people as well as visitors another pleasanter solution would do the same job. Why didn't they plant Cherry Tree or any other suitable kind of tree with a few Daffies as in other areas. Surely this would be more pleasant and acceptable to the people. I did notice that two of the timber posts had been uprooted and have had to be replaced I doubt if trees would suffer the same fate. I love to read other comments? Happy Days! PopT
  10. Some of the side roads on the low side of Cross St at Crookes are cobbled. they were ashphalted over but with the highways neglect of the roads the cobbles are now showing through in large patches. I drive over them regularly and find them an easeir ride than the ashphalt roads which are full of deep holes and a nightmare to avoid in such narrow places due to road parking. Whatever happened to the use of our road tax? The roads and paved areas in Sheffield are an absolute disgrace, ask any visitor or tourist.
  11. Hi Flyer Have you thought about doing your family history. As well as doing something worthwhile and inexpensive, it can provide all sorts of interests and activities depending where you want to gain interest. You can either do it yourself at home or join an historical or geneaology group, you will also find people with the same interests who are more than willing to help. It is also something that is not tying to times or appointments as you can work at your own pace. I hope this helps you. Happy Days! PopT
  12. I remember being in the Farfield pub one night when there was a dart's match due to start against a visiting team. The Farfield had a player short so they persuaded me to play for them even though I had told them I'd never thrown a dart in my life they wouldn't listen and aem up back,I volunteered. Everything was going well until it was my turn to throw. I didn't even know how to hold a dart never mind throw it, but I had a go. My first dart hit the number 2 on the twenty and it fell to the floor with the dart. After the cheers and shouting subsided I threw my second dart, this hit one of the metal staples that held the number ring in place. The staple fell to the floor and the number ring jumped off the board and hung from the embedded dart. This was the end of my bid to help out the Farfield darts team and any chance of fame in the dart world. Happy Days! PopT
  13. I sold my old bike to another Forummer bike enthusiast He bought it with intentions of restoring it. I never heard how he went on with it and whether it was back on the road. If he is reading this please let Popt know you have got on with it? Happy Days! PopT
  14. I think we need to move forward and use all ways of producing electricity. a lot of people are complaining about windmills and solar panels but this is all negative thinking, I do not see them suggesting any alternatives. Maybe all the 'Flat Earthers' would like us to bury our heads in the sand and continue to mine coal or build a few nuclear plants or keep the arabs in business by using oil fuels. Whichever way we look at it, we have to move on and eventually the technology will develop to a more acceptable way to produce power. I remember spending sometime on the island of Symi. The owners of three winmills perched on the top of the hill were converted to holiday lets. The first holiday makers arrived and complained to the courier that the windmills were windy. You just cannot win. Happy Windy Days! PopT
  15. Many Happy Returns on you birthday Hillsborough. The whole world is your oyster and you ought to continue taking advantage of everything that comes your way. At 60 years you have the experience of life and know how to enjoy your freedom of time. My old Mam used to keep a diary, it wasn't to record past events but to record the coming events. Every morning she looked in her diary to see what she had to look forward to. She never looked back as she said it made you old, always look forward and take pleasure in all and everything. Your excellent memory of past wonderful experiences in your life should encourage you to create even better pleasurable experiences, there is still a lot of joy to be had in this world for a sixty year old. I wish you all the best and I know your current feeling about getting old is a natural one and it has to pass. Happy Days Popt
  16. Just an idea but have you contacted the Rotherham Historical society. I haven't a contact number but I know they used to meet on a Thursday night in the Rotherham Civic Centre. It might be worthwhile to give the secretary a ring, I'm sure his address will be on the internet. I hope this helps PopT
  17. Hi You could look up the inhabitants of Morgan Avenue on the Electoral Rolls that are in the Local History Library. These are recorded every year so you can go back through the years. If the person you are looking for wasn't old enough to vote at least you will get the surname of their parents. Also you could find the neighbours and give them a ring for the person's whereabouts. I hope this helps? PopT
  18. My Father in Law Sam Woolhouse worked on Milling machine at Robsons about that time. Does anyone remember him? Happy Days popT
  19. I think the stall was Dixon's, just on the right as you entered the top end of the Rag & Tag Market, Dixon Lane End. Edward's the Pot Man had his stall opposite top of the first line of stalls. Happy Days! PopT
  20. Does anyone remember the beer off at the corner of Burnell Road and Penistone Road. It had hooks in the ceiling for hanging meat but I never remember them being used. Old Mrs Green used to own a little shop on Penistone Road on the same block. She was a regular at the Beer Off. She used to take a white jug and get it filled with beer and always nip into the first entry where she would have a good drink. She would return to the 'Offie'. to get it topped up again. I never saw her drunk but she did have a taste for that beer, Bless her! Happy Days! PopT
  21. Hillpig There's a publisher who does short runs of local books near the end of South Road. Maybe you could make an enquiry there. Fred Pass dedicated all the profits to a charity, that could be something to consider and help you with getting it published. I hope this helps. Good Luck, Popt
  22. Bill Kitson Is it the Lambpool pub you are writing about? Happy Days! PopT
  23. Hi I made an error in my posting about the airplane flying low over Wardsend House, the plane was a blue monoplane not a biplane as I posted. Sorry for my ignorance but I was never a real pilot!!!! Someone mentioned the cottages being damp, I know one time I visited, the Acasters were having problems and they were repairing a pump which was used to pump the water from the drain. Happy Days! PopT
  24. I remember when I worked on shifts at BSC Grimesthorpe Works. We used to go into the Alex for a couple of pints and the Shaker Band was great, mostly lads from firth Browns. They certainly livened the place up Happy Days PopT
