  1. Hi Allen When Belle View opened in Manchester it was known as, 'The Wembley of the North'. I can only think that the nickname 'Little Wembley' was a take off from that. I think we must remember there wasn't a lot of cheap venues for the ordinary families and such places gave some focus to a weekend walk and all the kids loved it. What more could they want, swings, Ice Cream, crisps and cups of tea. How things have changed. Happy Days! PopT
  2. My Uncle Frank was married to Sarah Ethel Burkinshaw. They lived on Rivelin Valley Road. popT
  3. As a kid we always called this place 'Little Wembley'. it was one of our Sunday walks from Owlerton. We loved the place and the Ice Cream. Happy Days! PopT
  4. One of my ancestors was a Meade. There is a Meade House in Hillsbrough currently used by the Social Services. I was told there was a family connection to the building but I have failed to find out any history to the building. Does anyone know the history of the place and how it came to be called Meade House? Any help would be appreciated. Happy Days PopT
  5. Can anyone help me please? I have a HP laptop with Windows 7 and free version of the AVG security. Recently I have lost the ability to go onto the Google search although it is my default search programme and I get a BT open zone advert constantly no matter what I try. If I attempt to update my AVG security it fails everytime although I can run a full scan on the outdated version. The scan says rthe computer is OK with no viruses etc. Can anyone please give me some advice of what to do as I in trouble with this and I do not want to throw money away if it can be fixed simply. Thanking you PopT
  6. Hi Down Under Many firms or organizaeions had their own works magazines where they posted obituaries or photographs of former employees lost in action. If he did work in a steelworks or some other large company you may find him in one of these magazines, some of which are in the Sheffield local History Library. It's worth a try. I hope this helps PopT
  7. I'm straying here a little but I have been so interested in this thread about Hillsborough, what memories.Great! Thanks for a look at your pictures Hillbro, they are fascinating and so interesting to study. Has anyone any pictures of old Softley's farm and the very old house next door on Brough Road? I'd love to see these places again. Happy Days! PopT
  8. Hi Sweetdexter I've sent you a PM. I have two cd's of Broonzy and an old EP which is magic. As well as being a recorder of many of the many unrecorded tracks he had a way about him which was intoxicating. His voice had a timbre to it that goot through to your soul and in my opinion one of the greatest blues singers to ever record. It was a honour and a privilege to see and hear him live. He stood on the stage alone unsupported and completely captivated the audience. Happy Days! PopT
  9. I was unfortunate to be caught out and caned by Mr Wadge. In his room he had a 'Stick Wall Cabinet' where there was a selection of caning sticks, some thick, some thin, some cane, some solid wood and one wrapped in black tape. He opened the cabinet and chose his weapon of choice and then gave me six of his best. G-d only knows how he chose the appropriate stick. During the rest of the day I couldn't sit down and I was bruised quite badly. I thought I deserved some punishment but on this accasion the punishment was far too severe, bordering on sadism. I still enjoyed my time at the Tech. though but I never forgot that incident. Happy Days! PopT
  10. Hillsbro Your 1951 picture of your family on holiday on the motorbike and sidecar is sheer nostalgia. It really sums up those post war days and the pleasure people found in simple transport. Travelling to the coast must have been quite a journey for the family and yet I bet they enjoyed the challenge and the expectancy of seeing the sea. Happy Days! PopT
  11. Can anyone remember Big Bill Broonzy appearing in concert at the Sheffield City Hall? What a guy! I think it was about 1955, can anyone confirm this. Happy Days! PopT
  12. Does anyone know where any Danish artefacts have been found nearest to Sheffield. I do know they are found in Lincolnshire mainly near the rivers but I have never heard of any found in the Sheffield area. I do realise that Sheffield was only a small village on the banks of the Don in the time of the Danelaw so I guess they never bothered to settle but passed on to richer pastures. Happy Days, PopT
  13. GMarshman Hi I do not remember Ron Alcard but then my, 'Rememberer is getting worse but my Forgetter is getting better' I was in classes, 3x, 5x, & 6x, maybe Ron was in 3y,5y & 6y & we didn't get to know each other. Happy Days! PopT
  14. I remember in the late 1950's I was told that the Godfrey Dam was leaking and it was causing some concern to the Water Authority. It appears the general public were never informed as it could cause a panic. I cannot substantiate this but I have no reason not to believe him. I was studying at the time and it was a former Waterwork's employee who was lecturing at the college who told me. Maybe this was one of the factors taken into consideration when the dam was filled in. Happy Days! PopT
  15. I still have a load of Marklin track left if anyone's interested in buying, sadly the rolling stock went some time ago. Happy Days! PopT
  16. Hi There is the hamlet of Onesacre above which was a Viking settlement according to the local history. I do not know of any local events and I did ask on another posting on this forum if any viking artefacts had ever been found in the Sheffield area but drew a blank. Finding any artefacts would indicate the presence of vikings in the area but I have never seen or heard of any found. Happy Days! PopT
