  1. I think voting should be compulsory as it is in countries like Australia, with the caveat that 'none of the above' is included as an option for the disenchanted.
  2. Conservatives are just a lot craftier than the rest. Loads of hidden taxes which they don't exactly shout about do they? They have nothing but contempt for the public, think they are stupid and won't notice...
  3. Indeed. Blair was 'New Labour' - the electable Labour, and people went for it in droves after years of Tories in power. What the electorate didn't realise is New Labour = Tory light... after all, as Tony Blair said 'were all middle class now...' and he went along employing Tory style spin. However, one thing the Tories are good at is keeping Labour out of power, not by being good at government, but by manipulating the public using dirty tactics ; sound bites ('winter of discontent' etc.) personal attacks and smeers, lies and anti-Labour propaganda, all gleefully reported by the Tory owned media, and in Boris Johnson's case, avoiding confrontation by refusing to do serious interviews, and hiding in fridges. I'm not sure Starmer is much better - he certainly hasn't got Blair's charisma or cunning, but in the absence of any party espousing real responsible socialism on offer, what other choice is there?
  4. Dear God, is nothing private any more? The things people will do for money and 5 minutes of fame....
  5. IMO the back entrance to M&S needs to reopen to increase the footfall on Chapelwalk. Don't know why it closed, but with improvements to Chapelwalk I would have thought it would be in M&S' best interest to do so.
  6. Banks manae to keep thingst secure. If they can do it the Government should be able to manage it...
  7. Just watch today's News. There's plenty of problems with PFI in their reporting that demonstrate the problems. |They resonate with me and probably with a lot of other teachers too.
  8. Are you suggesting that the council give a fig about disruption? They certainly didn't care when they built the original tram network.
  9. That old chestnut... Independent candidates have almost no chance of being elected unless they are a well known face or have garnered publicity on MSM in some way. To run a serious campaign costs serious money. Other potential candidates have to represent the party. To do that they have to tow the party line in order to get past the selection committee who will chose more of the same, not a maverick, so we just get more of the same.
  10. Not saying on a public forum. It was in Barnsley, but could be applied to a great many schools built with PFI. The deals were flawed from the start as anyone with longterm vision could tell you, and often tried.
  11. There's nothing crazy about the idea. It's the lack of money and the disruption that will stop it happening. But then you can apply that to anything.
  12. Personally, I'd run it up Glossop Road, along Clarkhouse road down to the Hunters bar Roundabout and back down Ecclesall Road. Of course it would create mayhem which is what people said in the first place before they started building the tram, but that didn't stop them. While we're in cloud cuckoo land, I'd also take it down the middle of the ring road dual carriageway to join up with the tram roundabout at the bottom of Granville Road. That would serve students and shoppers alike, but it's never going to happen anyway.
  13. That's excelleny news! Just what it needs. Been saying it for ages. Let's hope we get a really interesting mix of independent traders for Chapelwalk.
  14. There's a move to open Sheffield Doncaster airport at a cost of £100 million of public money, as the government won't fund it. (So much for levelling up.)
  15. Hallamshire hospital may no longer have an Accident and Emergency department (they're now at Northern General,) but the Hallamshire is busier than ever with daily clinics and outpatients etc. The parking is even more attrocious now that they've closed the top road, and the carpark is frequently full. The disabled parking is drop off only so disabled patients can only attend appointments with help or take a taxi, (£30 round trip in my case.) If ever an extention was needed and a tram stop in place, it's outside the Hallamshire hospital.
  16. Yes! The school i worked at was built by PFI, very shoddy build and tied into a contract, but a new school was very necessary so had no choice. Work was only guaranteed for 20 years, so now 20 years on, it's falling apart. It's on it's own and repairs are ridiculously expensive these days.
  17. Tell me about it... It's disgraceful. A lot of the people it affects are the ones who lived frugally did their best to save a bit and have it put by for old age. This is not what they had in mind - more money than they ever earned in their life, and certainly not value for money. It should be subsidised at the very least, or as it's often due to illness it should be part of the NHS and paid for in that way. What worries me is that life is getting so complicated and changing so fast that a lot of people who normally would cope just fine will find they no longer can unless they are au fait with technology. But you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and memories are not what they were, so that's debatable..
  18. You Gov has polls and petitions every day of the week. What's so difficult? Anything that keeps politicians in touch with their public is a good thing isn't it? It doesn't have to be binding, but it would give them a taste of what the population in general is feeling at least. So many politicians are completely out of touch with the real world.
  19. Yes indeed. It's our money we paid in, but we seem to have no say in what it's spent on these days...

    Death

'Only two certainties in life, death and taxes.' Don't know who said that but they sure got it right. However there's a big chunk inbetween to do what you will. Sell the house and spend the money on a world cruise or something...
  21. Not necessarily. Plenty of people are on the 'cusp,' not enough to live on but too much for other benefits. Besides which other benefits might also be cut as the goalposts are constantly moviing.
