Do not ignore an RCD tripping it is there for a reason, to protect your installation and most important your lives. It will take less than 60 seconds to check the Earth Fault Loop Impeadence with the correct equipment. Please do not ignore it, it could cost you your life.

A dead test is with the power totally disconected, not while power is energised. Are you a qualified electricianb because if you was there is know way you would suggest this action.

Where do you get your information from, a qualified good electrician would never disconect the earth only on a dead test with no power connected. I dont know of this "common thing to do when fault finding" Are you a qualified 17th edition tester with the relivent qualifications. Before you ask I am and have been a consultant Electrical and Electronics engineer for the last 15 years and a MIET and carry my own test kit and can issue electrical cirtificates to BS 7671. Your information is dangerous and you should retract it

Your comments are ill advised and dangerous, no way can you sugest removing the earth. Electrics cause fire the earth is there to firstly protect people and secondly an installation. I suggest you read BS 7671 (Requirrements for Electrical Installations), before you give advice.

Hi Anna, When you say the fuse blew do yo meen a circuit breaker. Does your fuse board have an RCD and is this what trips or is it an old board with rewirable fuses. Also the advice to disconnect the earth is a dangerous step to take and please do not do this.

Absolute rubbish, by using an extention cable to another socket gives a question mark of the supply to the socket where the device is pluged into. A clamp meter (a set of tongs) only is used for individual wires not flexes. An RCD reacts to Earth faults not impedence, the rcd is there to protect and each circuit has its own breaker. I do not understand you thought that a volt drop through an extention lead reduces the problem. The RCD is not a circuit breaker if it trips there is an earth fault, not a current overload. Try reading BS761.

Did any of the 2 electricians check the ring main supply and check the Earth Fault Impeadence, which if incorrect would cause an RCD to trip Hope all goes well

So I live in the far North East of Scotland 1.7miles from a B road with no public transport. I work from Inverness to Wick, Fort William, Stornoway and Kikwall with many more remote places. How do you think I can get there by public transport when we dont have any. We do not have streets up here only single track roads and the odd dual carrageways. You are talking rubbish

Snow,Ice, High Winds are common place here. 1 to 2 foot of snow and temps down to -14 are not unusual, but we get on with it and the area does not grind to a halt. My Mum and Dad lived there in the 70,s, it was a farm originally owned by the Fox Family. I remember the house and the outbuildings and the cottages, as I lived there for a few years. I must ask the question, why do you need to collect information on a farm that now is no longer there?

Have you been to the North of Scotland, or is your oppinion based on the media. Try living in snow no public transport,no motorways or dual carrageways, fuel 15% more than you pay. I pay my council tax @ £1500.00 and dont complain.we have no street lights, a road,refuse collection we have to walk 0.7 of a mile to the collection point. I am happy with my lot you feel we have it easy up here come to the very North of Scotland and find out you would not last it. After a visit to Tesco in Inverness and due to an injury I sat as a passenger in the car park, I would think the capacity was for in excess of 750 up to 1000. Sitting there you watch and form oppinions, after 1 hour it was an eye opener. 40% of all the cars were 4x4's with no muck on the wheels and here is the sad part 30% were women drivers who could not park. This is not a dig at women drivers, but why do they drive this type of a vehicle and cannot control them is it because they feel safer. It was strange earlier this year when we had heavey snow falls they were not on the road there was on occasion a woman in a 4x4 was stuck on the road to Inverness I stopped to help and offer a lift into town, but she was driving in normal mode. I said put it in 4 wheel drive the second leaver she said I dont know what that is for my husband said do not toutch it. I put it into 4 wheel drive low ratio for her and she was on her way. I gave her my phone number if she was stuck did not here from her untill a week later she saw me in the car park and present me with a bottle of wine and a thank you note. My point is people should be able to control the vehicle and be aware of all the controls before they take to the roads and this applies to both men and women
