  1. Sounds like the closest they could get to Hail Mary to me.
  2. The law trumps signs put up by management. Which is also the reason why publicans can't put up signs saying "Management allows smoking on these premises".
  3. I'm well aware of all that. I was just trying highlight that the argument that cyclist don't contribute to the maintenance of the roads is manifestly false as council tax explicitly includes a proportion for that very purpose.
  4. As it is treating everyone equally, it wouldn't fall foul of anti discrimination laws. Did she have an opinion on solo sex - or didn't you ask?
  5. If a precedent had been set that it was OK to discriminate based on the inequality of marriages and civil partnerships there would certainly be calls for to eliminate the fudge that are civil partnerships by legalising marriage between gay couples.
  6. Have you never read the leaflet that comes explaining your council tax?
  7. Facebook just became set to release even more user data - it's now going to give out people's home addresses and phone numbers. See here. Yes you have to allow it but most people just allow everything when asked anyway. If you have kids who use facebook, you may want to explain the dangers to them as well.
  8. I love flamingjimmy's comparing of football shirts to cosplay. As for the difference between geeks and nerds - kxcd has the answer.
  9. For a couple of years I think. The council haven't updated the signs as it will cost too much. See council bus lane FAQ.
  10. Putting 'st johns ambulance volunteer' into a search engine would probably be a good first step.
  11. We ARE talking about choosing grains of sand TWICE though. What is the probability of the first person picking that particular grain of sand and how is that combined with the probability of the second person picking the same grain of sand? It makes it obvious you don't understand probability and it's difficult to not think that it undermines your judgement about the likelihood of other things.
  12. Rob, Again you are demonstrating your lack of understanding of basic probability theory. Try this: If you toss a coin twice, when you toss the coin the second time the probability of it landing heads is 1 in 2, but what is the probability that it will land with the same side facing up as the first time?
  13. Scientist complain that science on the TV to too dumbed down. To some extent, any specialist subject is. As for business programmes, others have pointed out how much of the news is about business but what about these others from the BBC site. The Bottom Line - Evan Davis discusses issues with business people Food Programme - Which covers the food industry Farming Today - Farming industry In Business - sort of obvious from the title Most of them are on Radio 4 but do business people have much time to watch the TV during the day? I'd have thought listening to the radio, or at least podcasts/recordings when travelling or similar would be more useful which may partially explain why the coverage is focussed on the radio.
  14. You might find an exercise bike more use. Your weight will be supported by the bike so you only need to put in enough strain on your knees to turn the pedals. As well as improving your circulation, moving your knee joints like that will slosh the joint fluid (sinovial fluid) round and reduce joint pain. I'd advise speaking to your doctor and seeing what they think.
  15. It is you who is demonstrating a misunderstanding of basic probability theory here. If you want to work out the probability of two independent events both occurring you multiply their probabilities together, as dosxuk did with two people picking the grain of sand in your example.
  16. Well they might, but I wouldn't rate much for the chances of any insides maintaining any sort of structural integrity.
  17. Your original post implied that people who live on their own are automatically unhappy. People who do live on their own and are quite happy to do so get a bit fed up of people labelling them as such.
  18. Not an EEC directive. People on the continent have always had washing machines that only take cold water. It costs manufacturers more to have a separate model for the UK that can use hot water as well and they need to have a heater anyway in case the hot water feed is not hot enough for the hottest wash. It's just manufacturers simplifying their product lines.
  19. How do you feel about people who live with others in misery?
  20. Given that the vast majority of people who have heard of John Hill think think he's a nutter for claiming to be the messiah, his best chance of getting a sympathetic jury is if his case is not widely covered in the media. Even then, that will be for naught if he claims to be the messiah in the court room.
  21. They don't always put the programs on iPlayer as soon as they've been broadcast. Have a bit of patience and check tomorrow.
  22. Sounds like his tax affairs are going to be one of the first investigated.
