  1. Elmet, what was their conclusion on this great battle? No-one can agree on the landing of the Norse fleet (Mersey? Humber? Solway Firth?) let alone the battle itself when they linked up with the Scots to face King Athelstan of Wessex! Was the battle at Catcliffe, Bromborough, York Vale or Burnswark?
  2. And what fair maidens - not under 30 - are available for dating in Sheffield?
  3. Only when outside of your contract, or they'll laugh down the 'phone!
  4. Lol, thanks for the genuine repliers! Shame there are such bitter and stupid morons who seek to denigrate and be sour about posts here, probably unrelated to their experience and comfort zone. Take care in the weather, everyone.
  5. No, stupid, to share stories about people either blocked in, or those who have to continue working? I expected idiots to post also, though. Yes it was /is really bad out there, we almost got caught out by the weather ourselves!
  6. Got congested on the A1 so took a diversion on the A66 West, which was dodgy and as yet no radio traffic reports. It was blocked by Police at Brough, so we turned around and tried to reach Darlington via the back roads and A167 to get back to the A1- very risky (and each road shut!). Finally, we reached the A1 and - as it was clear up North we reached Edinburgh. On the return journey (A1 all the way south) it was q.clear until we got to the M1 at leeds! I'm glad I didn't stay over until today!
  7. Good point, Leah. Yes I think it's only with ebay-bought items? Sounds like the OP had a very close one. There's some cheap thieving b*****ds out there?
  8. Ebay has a few, about £100 or so. Can't think of anywhere local.
  9. Jeremy Vine hosted this topic, which was prompted by a couple of recent surveys which appeared to connect working class people ('the poor') and fatness (fast food and lazy cooking?) With opposing guests Edwina Currie and (?) a Socialist writer, he asked if we could tell the 'class' of a person from walking behind them, the argument being that lower class folk eat rubbish and fizzy drinks, whereas posher/richer people don't? This invited interesting stereotypes from callers, ie the 'chavs' and 'lazy' and the portly 19thC Lord of the Manor and thin underslass of paupers! Is fatness a class issue, with the 'middle classes' being more enlightened about dietary needs? Or is it down to cost- cheap, fatty ready meals and pop?
  10. You're right, guys! sigh. Ebay it is....... again!
  11. I recently bought an ebay item (a winter coat) for about £35, which arrived from China quickly and well packaged. But upon delivery I have decided (within my distance buyer's rights) that I have changed my mind even though it is a lovely coat, and anyway their XXL size is medium for me! The seller is ok about returns and refunding and provided an address, but which is the cheapest courier to use? Most say about £30-odd, which isn't even worth it? Thanks in advance
  12. I since have done and am with family now, until a decent and legit flat crops up. Housing Aid were excellent and confirmed that it is two month's by UK law that I had to stay. But it was very complex and I was concerned about harrassment and break-ins etc. I was at a vulnerable time as a close family member was dying, I thought I'd made a good move at the time and would pursue the landlord for a ten agreement as I settled in etc. But three "landlords " in quick succession later, I woke up rapidly. Thanks for your advice, guys.
  13. Thanks guys for the advice- I always am myself, but am clueless about which suits are 'laughed at' these days generally, especially as in my new job I'd be hoping to make a 'good impression'?
  14. I am starting a field sales job (driving, visiting office etc) and wondered which were stylish for the job? What colour suits and ties go with what, and where's best to buy a good but not too dear suit?
  15. Thanks, that's at least a ray of sunshine. I'm worrying if their community plays by the housing and police rules though?
  16. In Sept this year i moved into a rented flat above a shop in Sheffield (all bills incl) but the Chinese landlord didn't do a tenancy agreement, despite me asking. So, two landlord's later (suddenly - iwas told nothing each time hands changed!), all of which speak little English, i have been told that the new landlady might want me out! I am ringing citizens advice bureau tomorrow to seek advice, and have asked family about moving out with them, but where do I stand without a tenancy agreement?
  17. I recently needed the advice of a CAB and rang one at random (i am in s2) but was told bluntly that i had to find one 'nearer' to me? I Googled, but can't find one that serves s2? Besides, i didn't know that they held us to cachement areas!
  18. Where do we generally stand with utility companies when there are regular powercuts? Is there any legal comeback if the length of 'downtime' exceeds a certain limit? Does it depend upon whether someone has young kids in the home, or whether they are OAP's without heat and lighting (my gran once received £100 and a box of chocs when her power stayed off for five hours- i forget the agreed cut-off limit)? Is there a cut-off point for liability in terms of time 'down' for those sat in the dark without power for hours? Does it depend on the utility company, the individual circumstances or is it just a case of 'not our fault'?
  19. It's sickening, I know that I got this curry smell through from neighbours below me in a flat in Ventnor Court. Nothing can really be done, officially! ;-)
  20. Lol, my gf lives there, can't help winding 'em up in the sticks! Thetty-fotty, tha' dunt...
  21. Have they dosed the local generator treadmill donkey up too much?
  22. A relative has been bequeathed a large corner unit, roughly 6ft by 3ft². Although it is more bulky than heavy, we're wondering what is the cheapest way to get it from Sheffield to relatives in the south? Will any couriers do it, or would it be cheaper hiring a van?
  23. I moved into a flat over a shop and whilst the outer door is secure, the inner door -to my flat- has severe damage (locked by a padlock and thin board over a through-through hole), which the landlord said he would fix asap when I moved in. He hasn't and is now seemingly ignoring my texts, or seemingly fobbing me off when he does reply. What can I do?
  24. Er, nope. Any historical incidents involving Sheffield according to sources. I know about the etymology of local place names, but there doesn't (as far as I know) seem to be any recorded viking incidents regarding this (long inhabited) location?
