  1. Is that measured at the base of the wind turbines? Thanks for everyone's answers! I will have a good look at the links
  2. ...higher than Stannington? Does anyone have any stats for both their heights above sea level?
  3. They're cool - what material did you use?
  4. It's a tall order to tick all boxes. I can suggest a camelia as you can manipulate the pH in a container, but it's spring rather than summer....however you could grow a shrub and one of the new dwarf clematis and have an extended season of interest.
  5. Ahh...I saw it being painted on my commutes but couldn't quite see what it said or what it was tbh. Thanks!
  6. They have a habit of suckering... Beautiful though, we have one. I should wait until early winter. If it's already started sending out suckers you might still be digging them up months from now.
  7. We had a replacement tree planted back in May outside our house on the public footpath. I've noticed that the patch of soil in which it's planted is now full on weeds including bind weed! Would I be in trouble if I were to weed it, and plant it up with some wildflower seeds, or something shallow rooted like sedums for pollinators?
  8. I think maybe the poor weather had an impact on the amount on offer sadly (and perhaps the Stannington Carnival). But it was great to watch the chainsaw carvers and the glass blowers.
  9. Has June 2016 been the wettest - or at least as wet as June 2007? I can't seem to find a definite answer (for Sheffield at least)
  10. It's a dreadful nuisance isn't it? We have the same issue in our garden and it just a constant battle...the only thing I can suggest is trying to pick it before it flowers and sets seed
  11. Soapy water and a good squirter does the trick with both white and greenfly
  12. If you're reluctant to use weedkiller, I would suggest old carpet laying down over an area for a few months to block out light and kill off the weeds. It will take longer of course, but you can then work on one smaller area at a time so you're not overwhelmed. For weedkiller, I'd join your local allotment group. You don't have to have an allotment for most memberships, but you can access Gyphosate for far better prices. (I'm assuming the UK can still get Gyphosate)
  13. Well known in Wadsley Bridge. Unfortunately we also have one in Stannington area that uses our garden as a run through. Makes a bit of a mess if you try to prevent it, so we've now shored up the soil in our flowerbeds where it's dug under the gravel boards of the fences to allow access....it leaves the plants alone mostly now as it's happy to forage elsewhere
  14. Roofers are the same. I've had one even come out to price up a job and despite leaving messages never had the quote...some day these half hearted tradesmen will be struggling to find work and wonder why their reputation is poor
  15. Do pigeons bathe in it? They are culprits in my friends pond for leaving oily scum
  16. I've had a pond for 2 years. It has a small mains waterfall, recommended plants (marginals, floaters, oxygenating weed etc). The area surrounding it is planted up with various foliage and flowering plants and there are lots of nooks and crannies created by rocks and stones. I have the obligatory ramp in case anything falls in and needs to climb out. The water is nice and clear. I don't use any chemicals and it is topped up if required by rainwater. It's pretty as a picture....however.... Despite all the literature telling me that wildlife will find it within days, I have had nothing resembling so much as a pond skater! In fact the only 'fauna' to call it home are some ramshorn snails bought last year to keep algae down. What am I doing wrong?
  17. Beautiful selection at Wentworth garden centre at very reasonable prices I noted yesterday.
  18. I've waited until now to vote because I've been watching the debates. I'm have seen nothing to persuade me to alter my view of wanting to leave the EU. I am appalled to hear that Theresa May is trying to scare voters into thinking that leaving the EU will risk our security and open us up to terrorism! What a load of rubbish. We might have something to worry about if we were discussing leaving the UN...but we're not!
  19. When will it end??? I'm shattered. Zero sleep. I wondered if it was in our road as it was so loud (Stannington), thinking that someone's parents were away and the youngsters were having a party....then I wondered if someone had died leaving their music going on a loop... I really pity the poor folk whose doorstep it's actually on!
  20. I use soapy water and my finger and thumb to rub them off
  21. I would go for big plants for effect such as fatsia japonica, mahonia and phormium. You can grow them in pots but use a soil based John innes compost
  22. Isn't Atlanta having a bad time of it with Neptune and/or Octavia?
