  1. We only discovered recently that our father grew up on the "Hutments". His name was Charles Webb and he lived on Seventh Road with his parents and his brother Les. When everyone was rehoused the family went to Parson Cross. If anyone has anymore information about life there I would love to hear from them. I know there was a booklet written about the huts and if anyone has a copy I would willingly purchase it.
  2. I am researching the Hattersley family and I would like to contact anyone descended from the family from Brightside. The parents were Annie and William Hattersley and they had at least seven children. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. :)Anita
  3. Anlaby, you are right it was Ethel Housley's cottage (my great aunt), but strangely she was related to the Hattersleys by marriage. My grandmother, Annie Wright, was her sister-in-law. My grandparents lived at the top of Limpsfield Rd, I think I mentioned that before. I still have not found a photo of the cottage though.
  4. I noticed that there had been bombs around the Jenkin Road area of Brightside, does anyone have any idea if an air raid post was hit there. My mother always told a story about it and I would love to know if it was true. Thanks Anita
  5. I am desperately trying to find a photograph of the old cottage which stood at the top of Dearne Street. My great aunt lived there alone from around 1919 after her husband was killed in the first world war until she went into a nursing home in the early 1970s. I don't know when the cottage was demolished. I spent many many happy hours there with her as a child but there are no family photos of the cottage. I have tried the archives and the Sheffield Libraries with no luck. Here's hoping. Thanks Anita
  6. Hi Lazarus, I've just seen your posting about The Queens Restaurant, I also worked there with Mr Gabriel and his son George. My late husband Tom was the chef there. This was about 1965-67.
  7. Hi Andy, although I was tall, I was mousey. You were there after me as I left in 1961. Miss Brown was my first teacher in the infant school. You may remember my sister Ruth, she was a redhead.
  8. Hi Mick, I have just PM'd you but I have just seen this message. You were there before me and I have tried to work it out and I think you may have been there at the same time as my brother Ian Webb. Any thoughts?
  9. Puzzler, I am so pleased that someone else remembers fiveboys chocolate. When I put this question on a thread a while ago no-one knew what it was. Do you rememember what the titles under the boys faces were? I can only rememeber desperation and realisation.
  10. Thanks very much for that info alirosdan I am going to try Rare and Racy to see if they have got any copies. Anita
  11. The plantation was the small wooded area at the front of the school which bordered Barnsley Road. It was separated from the school by railings, there was one missing which left a space and the girls constantly hung upside down by their knees in the gap.
  12. That's fantastic alirosdan, I wish I could find a copy of that or any of the others. If you find the titles would you let me know please? Anita:)
  13. Hi, I went to Firshill infants and juniors in the 1950/60s and remember Mrs Jackson and Miss Brown in the infants and Mr Sims,Mr Robinson and Mr Cox in the juniors. Mr Sims was my favourite teacher, he taught me so much and made us remember what we learned. We used to have Sports day on the Atlas and Norfolk ground. Does anyone remember the "plantation"?
  14. Hi Cat, saw your message to Tony. My dad also lived in the Tyler St. Hutments and I have a couple of photos of them taken from picturesheffield. In the Sheffield central library there is a booklet called "Shanty Town" Childhood Memories of poverty, Happiness in Tyler St. Munition Huts by Betty Dickinson 1985.I have tried to find a copy but to no avail as yet.
  15. I have been tracing my family tree for a few years and I have a Frank Housley born 1889/90 South Yorks died at Passschendale 24th Oct 1917 aged 26. He was my Great Uncle. My Great Aunt lived till she was 81 and never remarried. If you have any info about his earlier life I would be grateful if you would let me know. Thanks Anita
  16. When the shoes began to wear Alla Balla boosha began to swear and these are the words he said. Lady lady touch the ground , lady lady turn around , lady lady read your book, lady lady take your hook. I have taught all the old skipping rhymes to my grandchildren and the love them and skip to them. Their favourite is "somebody under the bed". all good fun and if we pass these on they will never go away.
  17. Thanks Greybeard, I found both these but like you I still can't find anything else. If anyone out there can find any photos in your collections I would be sooooo! grateful. I am looking esp. for photos of people in the area possibly at church functions etc. My Grandmother, Annie Wright, was active at St Margarets all her life and her husband Fred was a memeber of the chapel I think. They were both involved with the annual flower show and I have prize tickets from many years back. I would love to have copies of any photos from these shows. My grandfathers sister Ethel Housley lived at the cottage and she too was active within the church/chapel. :
  18. I am hoping that someone out there may have a photograph of the old cottage at the top of Dearne Street in Brightside. The cottage was still there at the end of 1969. My great aunt lived there for 40+ years and I visited her regularly as a child. I have wonderful memories of the cottage and would dearly love a photgraph. I am also looking for any photos of any events at St Margarets church Brightside 1950+ and events at the Wesleyan Chapel on Dearne St from the same era. Thanks Anita:)
  19. Oh dear how many negative people around. Sheffield isn't perfect but what big city is?The peace gardens are wonderful and to see so many enjoying the area in the sunshine instead of avoiding the place due to dropouts drinking there is great. Barkers Pool is a much nicer place than it was. Things change all the time and that is the way a big city like Sheffield should be. There are many new plans for the city centre in the pipeline and I hope the powers that be will listen to what local people want but I also hope that we can accept things with an open mind. Despite the litter louts etc Sheffield is much cleaner than it ever was. Stop looking at the past through rose tinted specs and get excited about the future.
  20. Is there anyone like me who remembers Firshill school in the mid 50s early 60s. I know its a long long time ago but my memory stretches that far back so I hope other peoples do too. I lived on Skipton Road and like most people in those days trudged to school over Scott road. I would love to hear from anyone who remebers those days. In the infants I remember Mrs Jackson and in the juniors Mr Cox was head and Mr Sims was my teacher for three years. He was a great teacher and he taught me a lot in a way that stuck in my memeory for ever. Anita
  21. Hi I have been trying to find people who lived on Limpsfield Rd for a while. My Grandparents lived right at the top of Limpsfield under the old quarry as did a great aunt and uncle. they were called Wright and Hattersley. I also had a great aunt Ethel Housley who lived in the cottage at the top of Dearne St. I just wonder if any of these were known to you although I realise they would have been very old then. Hope something here rings a few bells. Anita
  22. Hi Cat. thanks for your reply and query. All I know about the hutments is what I have gleaned from the booklet I mentioned previously. A copy of the booklet is in the Sheffield Central Library and I am desperate to own a copy for myself. I know that my father must have spent most, if not all his chidhood there. His family were originally from the Stroud area and were living in the courts on Suffolk Road when he was born in 1917 but I dont know when they moved to Tyler St or when they moved to Parson Cross. They were still on Tyler St in 1936. I am certain he was there as a young man as my mum lived on Limpsfield Rd Brightside and they must have met, if not at school , then in the area somehow. My family were not great talkers and did not really mention their childhoods at all. If I find out anymore I will certainly let you know. Anita
  23. I am looking for any members of the Holt family who used to live on Limpsfield Road in Brightside in the 50/60s. Father, Mervyn Spencer Holt married to Margaret, son Derek and daughter/daughter in law Margaret. I believe they may be related to me via my Grandmother Annie Wright nee Hattersley who also lived on Limpsfield Road. Any info at all would be welcome. Thanks Anita
