  1. Yes indeed! I had almost given up hope of being able to trace Uncle Leonard's family. I will be checking into the Forum on a regular basis from now on.😊
  2. Many thanks to a friend for alerting me to this post, as I have not visited this Forum in a long time. I am a member of the Portman family - my Mum Jean Portman was the sister of Leonard, and George and Edna Portman were my grandparents. Sue and I have now made contact and are overwhelmed to have found each other after many many years. We are busy exchanging information and photographs. Thank you also to everyone who has contributed the above information.
  3. Thank you very much! That's a great photo, and just what I was looking for. Joy
  4. I've already checked that site, but I can't see any photos of the building on there unfortunately. Thanks for the reply though.
  5. Does anyone have a photograph of the school itself (i.e. not class photos) from the 1960s which is when my sister and I were there? I'm doing a scrapbook for her and would like to include it. Joy
  6. My great grandfather, Hugh Ellison 1849-1923, was a member of the chapels at Warren, then High Green and finally Mount Pleasant, Chapeltown. He was the conductor at the annual Whitsuntide gatherings in the Ten Acre, a role he carried out for 40 consecutive years. I have a photograph of the Whit Gathering c1900 at the Ten Acre (which I believe I got from Picture Sheffield), a newspaper cutting from 1917 describing the procession and subsequent gathering, and my great grandfather's obituary, if they are of any help. Joy.
  7. I don't remember a John Fowler I'm afraid. I do remember the barber's shop, now you come to mention it, and that the clock was called Freda. I think it was named after the wife of either Mr. Newton or Mr. Chambers.
  8. We used to walk past those cottages on our way to Charlton Brook, where we would play for hours. We also went that way for the Mt Pleasant Sunday School outing after the Whitsun parade to Chapeltown Park. My Grandad was Harold Lewis, who looked after the grounds of Mt Pleasant chapel, and he and my Grandma were very active in the chapel. I was friends with Kathleen Notley, Peter's sister, and used to go to their flat at Lane End. Did you know anyone from Mt Pleasant Close or Lound School?
  9. I lived at no. 21, my parents were Norman and Jean Lewis. We lived next door to the Broadhursts at no. 19 and the Hemingways at no. 23. In the corner were Mr. and Mrs. Martin (Walt and Elsie?). They lived next door to Mr. Wiggington, then there were Mr. and Mrs. Adams and the Hitchmans I think. Then Mrs. Varley in the bungalow near the 'snicket'. Who was your immediate neighbour at no. 16?
  10. As a child in the 1950s I lived at Mount Pleasant Close in Chapeltown, and remember going to the local shops which were on the main road leading from Mount Pleasant Church to Lane End: Robson's Sweet Shop, Brookes's Off Licence, Lifford's Toy Shop and Boyes Hardware. Does anyone remember these, and even better, where I might find any photos of them? I'm doing a scrapbook for my sister and would love to include them, or memories of them.
  11. Nigel, just wanted to thank you for the information on the family tree provided by your aunt. I got it on my return from holiday, and will be sending you a copy of my tree in the next couple of weeks. best wishes, Joy.
  12. My Mum was born Edna Jean Portman at Whitley, Ecclesfield, daughter of George Portman and Edna Cooke. This branch of the tree originated in Thorpe Hesley then spread to High Green, Howbrook, Chapeltown, Barnsley and wider, but the Portmans first came to Thorpe Hesley from Netherton, near Dudley in Worcs. I'm interested in any descendants of the Portmans in the Yorkshire local areas, and will be happy to exchange information if you're interested in family history. Joy.
  13. I'm interested in the Portman family, who were based in Thorpe Hesley, Kimberworth, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown, High Green, Howbrook and Barnsley. I already have a lot of information about them before 1900, but I would be interested to hear from anyone with connections to them. Edward Portman born about 1797 started the South Yorkshire dynasty, and originally came from Netherton, near Dudley in the West Midlands. Please PM me if there is a lot of information to pass on, to avoid clogging up the forum.
