  1. Hi Everyone, I’m just getting into cricket and was recently given a bag full of gear. Unfortunately there isn’t a bat! Can anyone recommend where I can get one from? I don’t want to pay more than £100 really. I didn’t realise how much a proper bat cost so I would be willing to buy one second hand as long as it is in decent condition. Unbelievably neither Decathlon nor Sports Direct stock cricket bats so I’m probably looking at smaller specialist shops or online. Any advice would be most gratefully received. Thank you
  2. Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could recommend an adult photography class? I've just come by a digital SLR camera and after going out to take some photos around Sheffield, realise that haven't got the foggiest how to use it! Thanks, Sheffwise
  3. Wow! Someone wrote a 300 page book on the History of King Edwards!! Shame they only put in one dodgy picture of lower school though.. Still it'll make a good read on a lonely night. Thanks 1978.
  4. Good morning good people of Sheffield Forum. I was wondering if anyone has any pictures of the now demolished 1960's/70's King Edward Lower School building? I was at the school in the 90's and would love to see it again. When i was there the building was in a very sad state. If you sneezed to hard, some of the plaster would fall down on you. Lots of the windows in what was known as the 'teaching block' wouldn't close properly and were single glazed so it was always freezing in there. If i can get the photographs together I would like to make a sketchup model of the building and would be happy to share it on here. So thanks folks, if anyone has any pictures or knows where I can find some, please let me know.
  5. I've really got to give a shout out to the lovely chap who runs Bright Printing at the bottom of the Moor just opposite Staples. I went into staples the other day to print a single sheet of A4 in colour. I was to that there was a three hour wait, a charge of three pounds for the printing and paper as well as a three pound digital medial charge (whether I emailed the file to them or via my USB stick). Anyway, I went across the road and the nice man printed for a pound while i waited. There were still people waiting in the queue at Staples when I was finished!! In summary, I would definitely recommend Bright Printing!
  6. Well the central library provides access to the internet but only on the computers that they provide and there is always a large queue to get on them. Im not sure what other libraries provide wifi. I'm sure there are loads of people like me and university students who just want a quiet place to work outside of their homes and it seems that it would take very little money and effort for libraries to install wireless routers. It may be the case that like pubs which show sky tv, there is an separate rate for 'public broadcasting' and that libraries would have to pay far more than the standard 'domestic' tariff.
  7. Thanks doug. If i go down that route there is an obligation to buy a cup of tea every hour. They also tend to get quite noisy. Does the city really not provide any public buildings with free wifi for its people who cant afford it?
  8. Hi everyone. I'm currently studying for an online course and since I am rubbish at working at home, I wondered if anyone knew of good places outside of the house for me to work. All I need is a a quiet space and some free wifi. I know the Zest centre (Upperthorpe library) has free internet but does anyone know if Sheffield's other neighbourhood libraries have free internet? I know that the central library does not. Thanks in advance everyone.
  9. I’m just about to head out to the Blake Hotel pub for a couple and it got me thinking back to when I was a kid growing up in the area. I always remember people saying that they used to have a race from the pub to the bottom of the road and back up again with the winner winning a tray of drinks (or something along those lines). Can anyone shed any light on this? A quick search of this forum and Sheffieldhistory hasn’t really cleared it up… I shall be having a word with the barman tonight suggest it is reintroduced if indeed it did exist in the first place!!
  10. Ay up folks. I’m just about to head out on a mooch around Sheffield to find some sloes to pick for gin making. I have heard that the recent rain has meant that they will be ready to pick a little earlier this year. Does anyone have any idea where they can be found? I remember my mum picking them off Ruskin park years ago and that they might be found on the hills around Bole Hill Road. Any suggestions (particularly around North and West Sheffield) would be great!!
  11. Hi everyone. I’m doing some research into Edward Street Flats at the moment and was hoping that people on here might be willing to share their thoughts, memories and perceptions of the area. I’ve had a few walks around the flats and spoken to one or two of the locals (one of which had been living there for 56 years!!). I’m quite interested in how people use the internal space to play, whether it is locals our outsiders who use it and whether the flats have community groups and societies who arrange events and keep the community together. I’m also interested in whether people knew that the park in the middle provides a public right of way through the flats. I certainly didn’t realise this until the other day. It actually provides a handy shortcut from Netherthorpe into town. One other thing I was interested in is how the structure of the community has changed over the years. One lady has told me that there are a growing number of people from ethnic minorities and students living in the estate. Also, can anyone shed any light on the proportion of flats which have been bought be their tenants and are now in private ownership. Thank you to everyone in advance for sharing your thoughts and memories with me.
  12. Hello everyone. Im trying to track down an old teacher called Irene Milner who taught at Daniel Hill Primary up to till its closure in 1997/98. She was a fantastic teacher who everyone loved and theres a few of us who are trying to track her down. All i can say is that she lived somewhere in the Parson Cross/Ecclesfield area (she took us to her house for sandwitches once) and that she was a Huddersfield Town fan (with a soft spot for Wednesday). Please can anyone with any information (indeed if she is still with us) please message me as i would love to write to her to let her know how everyone is getting on. Im sure she would really appriciate it. Cheers
  13. Have you actually been to any of the Oceana's in the other cities? I've been to the £8m brand new Oceana in Leeds and it's one of the best clubs I've been to - like seven clubs in one - with a Retro room, a Tokyo room, a Paris room, a huge generic dance/indie mainfloor etc. If you had actually seen the club before condemning it, you'd probably agree it's exactly what Sheffield needs.
  14. Personally i would say absolutley yes as the locals identify themselves as being "true" sheffielders and dont feel any afinity with Barnsley who they look down on a great deal. Thoughts anyone?
