  1. We are new here and renting a car for the first time this weekend. I would like to explore the Peak District and wondered if anyone had any hints as to the best places to hike and eat with our two kids (4 and 1). Thanks. genevieve
  2. I'm confused--and new here from the U.S. Can you take kids into pubs or is this totally off limits? Even during the mid-day if it is a pub that serves food? Is there such a thing as a kid-friendly pub? My kids are 1 and 4. Thanks for the help. Genevieve
  3. I'm asking more for my husband than for myself, but where does one watch American Football here. Can you get it on cable, or at the pubs. We just moved here from the U.S. and it really won't feel like Fall without a little football to watch. Also, my husband is a crazy Dallas fan and it would really cheer him up to know he could watch some of the games. Any place to watch Baseball here? Thanks for any help!!
  4. Hello all, I need some advice. I am moving from the U.S to Sheffield next month. My family has found a place to live in Bromhill (my husband will be working at the University) and now I would like to know about the area. Where to eat, where to avoid, good shops, good preschools, etc. We have two kids (4 and 1). I won't be working so I would love advice on what to do with the kids during the day as well. Thanks for any help. We are really looking forward to our big move. Genevieve
  5. Hello. I am moving to Sheffield from the US and I might be renting a house on Spooner Rd in Broomhill I believe. Can you give me information about this area. How close it is to shops, bus, train, etc? How kid friendly is the area? I have two children, 1 and 4. Also, do you know of any preschools nearby. We will not have a car. Thanks so much for any help!! Genevieve
  6. Yes, we are still moving. I am just holding off on my search for a little bit since it looks like it would be too difficult for someone to rent to us at this point. Most places tell me to wait until a month before we will be moving. That's cutting it a little close for me, but what can I do? I will certainly be back to this board with many questions in a few months. Thanks for checking in. Genevieve
  7. YEs, I probably will need to wait until the move date gets a little closer, but since we are moving to another country it would be nice to get things in order as soon as possible. Keep me posted about the rental in your area, it sounds nice. Genevieve
  8. Thanks for the lingo help. We have double glazing here, but it is called storm windows I believe. It is also something that is never mentioned in rental ads, while almost every rental I've looked up in the UK tells if it has double glazing or not. Also, all of the ads mention low-flush WC's. I know that a WC is the toilet, but what is the low-flush and why does it need to be mentioned. Thanks again!! Genevieve
  9. Thanks for all of the help so far. I will check into the papers and the websites. I'm glad I found this site, and will certainly be needed some more guidance. As an example, not only do I not know where to look for a place to rent (or let as you say) I can't understand most of the jargon used in the letting ads. I'll just start by asking what is double glazing? And do you need it? Thanks again. Genevieve
  10. My husband is going to be working on a post-doc at the U. of Sheffield starting August 1. I am lost in terms of where to find a good short-term (6 months) rental for our family (which includes 2 young children). We will not have a car so it would need to be in a good location for shopping, public transit, family friendly, etc. Any suggestions on places to look? Agecies that help you find a rental? We would like to have everything set up before we get there. And finally, are there any programs that you might tell me about that will help me to meet other mothers, or preschools, or other activities for young kids in sheffield. My children will be 1 and 4. Thanks. Genevieve
