  1. Hi I've still got the leaflet: It's Tues 20th Feb- Bring out your rubbish day Hunter Hill area - put your rubbish out up to 11am and as early as possible it recommends. Says most household rubbish taken but NOT TVs, computer monitors, fluorescant tubes, fridges, asbestos (der as if), gas bottles, car tyres, car batteries, stones, bricks, building rubble, soil, paint, oil, chemicals... Dont put it out overnight and put it in bags or boxes if possible. Area covered: Hunter Ct, Hunter Hse Rd, Roach Rd, Hunter Hill Rd, Fulmer Rd and Pinner Rd
  2. OK, having discovered our mid terrace is solid wall construction so we can't have cavity wall insulation, we're looking at alternative ways of insulating our freezing little 2-up, 2-down. The cellar underneath the living room is dry but seriously cold - any suggestions how we can warm it up please (or at least the insulate the ceiling area so we don't have an almighty draft coing up through the floor), without making it damp? The floor in our living room is particularly cold near the front door (which is draft proofed so the chill must be coming from the cellar) and the bay window (ditto). We have sealed wooden floors with thick foam underlay - it is actually warmer now with the selaed floors than it ever was when we had carpet and underlay.
  3. How do you attach an 'avatar' to your username please?
  4. Both still a fair old trek for people living near the Far Lees/ Fleury Road, all the Middle Hays etc
  5. Dunno - been some years since I lived there but still used to visit my mum up to about 9 yrs ago when she passed on, god bless her. We had a succession of mobile vans suplying all manner of goods and would have been lost without it- never figured out why the council didnt include a shop or shops in their grand design plan for that bit of hte estate. I mean, it was either Newfield Green or a hike up to Gleadless Townend or Herdings for the nearest shops.
  6. Me too- only have to mention the word IKEA and I'm inundated with requests for whatever item I'm passing on...
  7. its a good 20 minute hike to the nearest shops - Newfield Green - I know, I used to live 2 mins from the Far Lees. For a brief time,in the 60s or maybe the early 70s, we had a wooden grocery store at the bottom of the maisonettes, but that was taken away from us (anybody know why?) and all we had then was the moble van, so a lateshopper or similar would be useful.
  8. Brill! So are we all round to yours tonight then?
  9. you've done a grand job on the main roads -well done for that. Just a pity the side roads near us at Hunters Bar always get left - and there's no grit bin.
  10. cheers- dont think we qualify for any discounts but the link was helpful and gives me a contact at the council. I'm just not sure if the brickwork is suitable for injecting the foamstuff -(gosh I hope so- we've shivered in this tiny terrace for 18+ years as it is) - just wondered if anyone else with a similar property may have had it done.
  11. OUr friends lost their house as a result of thatcher's rob-dog policies and sky-high interest rates and we almost lost ours too so no thanks.
  12. OK, we live in a brick built 1904 mid terrace at hunters bar and even with the double glazing and the sealed wooden floors it is FREEZING. Doesn't help that we have the passage at the side of ours either, so there's always a mega draft and all the exterior and interior doors are in a line so the draft goes from the front door right through to the back! We've got full length thermal lined curtains and draft excluders but still -BRRRRRRR! I know the ancient central heating needs replacing too - that's on the list later this year, just as soon as we can save up the zillions it will cost (british gas- rob-dogs or what?), but is our type of building suitable for cavity wall insulation as well?
  13. After 30+ years of my fair share of too-close-for-comfort encounters with garlic breath students, pushchairs, briefcases and musty umbrellas, carting heavy shopping and all manner of diy goods home and standing at drafty bus stops waiting for a mising bus in the piddling rain, I'll be sticking to our recently acquired motor too.
  14. for me it was always 'camel's hump' at herdings/ gleadless valley, aka leighton road heading up to herdings and down to the Far Lees pub. I never could stay on that battered tin tray for long though...
  15. I heard on the radio a school or schools in Dudley have already arranged to be closed tomorrow on the off-chance there might be snow- because when it does snow, it will be too late for them to make a decision about whether or not to close- so they areclosing anyway- how daft is that? All this hoo-ha about severe weather, you watch, it'll only drizzle!
  16. Nonnas is expensive and full of posers but good for a special occasion. Felicine near Berkely Precinct is good too - BBs sounds worth a visit though
  17. just a query ...my partner's OAP mum has been told by her neighbour that their adjoining chimney stacks need lowering as a result of the recent storms and 50+ years of usage. She has gas central heating, he has solid fuel - I'm puzzled as I would have thought lowering would compromise the flue and increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Coincidentally, I happened to spot an item on the bbc website yesterday about rogue builders/roofers doing just such a thing in Kent and it included a warning about the risks of CM poisoning, but I can't find the link to the story now. Any thoughts? I would hate to see her getting ripped off. Also, if it is legit- does it require any form of planning permission? I tried to look at the latest building regs but lost he wil to live after the first few pages.
  18. Definitely Amazon - I sell a lot of our books on Amazon including academic, fiction, true crime - its easy to set up an account and you know in advance exactly how much you'll get once amazon take their 'cut'. But watch out if the books are heavy - make sure the price you offer them for covers the true cost of postage as Amazon charge a standard P&P from which they take their 'cut' - how some people can sell books for a penny and make a profit is beyond me.
  19. I'd wondered about using Notromors, thanks, will try that in the meantime. xK
  20. Thanks Roger- I still haven't figured out if I want to restore it to its former ultra violet glory or whether my budget could stretch to a custom (hmm purple or pink glitter finish...?) xK
  21. Thanks for these replies- it's sounding not quite as expensive as I was originally dreading and well worth me contacting M&B sometime after next payday...
  22. Hi all I have all the makings of a 1970s Raleigh Chopper (originally owned an ultra violet Mk II in the mid 70's and vowed I'd get another one day...) I've been itching to put it all back together for the past couple of years, but before I can do that, the frame and forks need stripping and respraying and I'm at a loss where to get it done. I'm reluctant to post it anywhere in case it never comes back (there are a few enthusiasts down South who offer to do the job). So, are there any local garages/ body shops where it might be welcome and has anybody else had a bicycle shot blasted/resprayed (I'd like a rough idea of the cost).
  23. I really miss the deli - it always seemed busy but obviously not enough to keep it in business. Their italian coffee beans were fab -I wish I'd made a note of the brand at least before the place closed.
