  1. I disagree, whether you use it or not it's installed on your hard drive taking up space, further it gets regular updates from Microsoft taking both your time & bandwidth to do so. Which was another reason I reverted, I schedule my updates for times that are convenient to me I don't want to turn the machine on and wait half an hour while it updates, then be told not to turn the machine off as it shuts down and configures them for another half hour when I need to get on and do things. I realise a lot of people would never update their machine unless they were forced to but I resent having the choice taken from me, and I know the enterprise & pro versions do allow you to schedule updates, this is only on home versions. Again this is my machine I paid for it, it does what I want, when I want or it goes back to the shop for a refund. Wireshark is your friend, I periodically check what my Win7 installation sends up the wire Plus there are security experts on line who check every update, that's how I found out about win10 sending encrypted data back and them trying to roll the same out to Win7 & 8 And as for activation Win7 was activated once, which is all it needed, however now Microsoft seem to want to check this every 90 days or so with KB971033, I can't think of any reason why they need to check the licenses on an activated system more than once but this schedules a regular check & I'll put money on Win10 having the same thing
  2. I've reverted from windows 10 for a couple of reasons One reason is the bloatware, it can be removed fairly easily if you know what to do, but I shouldn't have to remove it at all, it shouldn't be there certainly not Cortana & xBox, these could be optional downloads if people want them, they aren't necessary for the upgrade though and for a novice they are difficult to shift. Another reason is the killswitch, I know it's only supposed to work on rogue software installed from the windows store, but that begs the question of why wasn't the software verified when it was added to the store rather than after it was installed on a users machine wasting their time, bandwidth and disk space. Further this is my machine, it is a tool, it does what I want, when I want, as often as I want & I will not tolerate someone in Redmond having the ability to disable software on my machine. And another reason is the sheer volume of data that Win10 sends back to Microsoft. Now even if you get rid of the bloatware & turn all the privacy options on Win10 still sends encrypted information along with your machine ID & several other bits of information that can identify you back to Microsoft, further it bypasses the hosts file so you can't dump this information somewhere harmless without altering settings on your router, again not something the novice knows how to do. And Microsoft are trying to roll out this data slurp to Windows 7 & 8 as well, if you have automatic updates turned on you probably already have these installed. See http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/09/01/microsoft_backports_data_slurp_to_windows_78_via_patches/ for more information Now it's very generous of Microsoft to give us a free operating system and when I installed it it did work very well, once I got rid of bloatware. And I realise they need to recoup their investment somehow, but they need to recognise that this machine is mine, I use it to make a living, I'd rather pay for an operating system that I can trust not to have bloatware, report what I'm doing offsite and give some remote person the ability to kill software on my machine than use their free offering. So I think this will be my last version of Windows, unless there is a major shift in attitude at Redmond, and I'll be migrating to some flavour of Unix instead
  3. Mod Note OK, no posts have been deleted, however there are several off topic posts and if I removed them all there wouldn't be much thread left. So if you wish to discuss other topics, kindly do so in another thread, the topic here is "Can Sheffield support more asylum seekers?". Any further off topic posts will be removed.
  4. Mod Note We seem to be drifting off topic which was about unreliable tradesmen, if you wish to discuss immigration do so elsewhere.
  5. Mod Note As we now appear to be talking about the exact same thing as the "Poor migrants from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan" thread. And as there is significant overlap between these two threads, meaning merging them would reduce the combined topic to nonsense. The decision has been taken to close this thread, please continue the discussion in http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1416798
  6. Mod Note When quoting other users please do not insert your own comments within the quote.

  9. Mod note Bickering posts, personal attacks and sexist comments have been removed along with any references to them. Apparently you can't even discuss something as mundane and unemotional as household insulation without hurling insults at each other. I never imagined I'd have to post a warning like this on a household insulation thread, kindly discuss the topic in a civil manner.
  10. This thread is to allow the advertising of free business resources or support that is being offered without commitment. Feel free to add details of any free resources or support that you or your company offers. Try not to duplicate information and please edit your posts rather than post updates
  11. OOO thanks for this, that'll save some time
  12. Did a clean installation post upgrade by resetting the machine, I have a backup of win7 if I need it. but by the look of it I probably won't be going back on this laptop Without the Asus bloatware the machine runs faster than it did under win7 and appears to still have most of it's features, some of the function buttons no longer work like for disabling the trackpad when a mouse is pluged in but the driver has a setting to do that automatically, similarly brightness buttons don't work but that's easily controlled on screen. So on the whole win10 for the win and asus can go do one with their add ons. Still has a problem with silverlight but that seems to be a general problem with silverlight and anything after IE10 where it's not producing sound. I prefer firefox anyway and silverlight runs in that quite happily. Noticed a few things I really don't want like xbox are still there I managed to get rid of xbox with this advice http://www.teoti.com/useful/136127-how-to-remove-xbox-from-windows-10.html
  13. I've upgraded a laptop from win7 home to win10. First impressions are that it looks OK, it wasn't a blisteringly powerful machine in the first place and the upgrade doesn't seem to have slowed it down noticably. I'm a little concerned about all the information Microsoft want sent back to them in order to use features like Cortana which tbh I'm not really interested in, so I've turned them all off. One thing I noticed was that Silverlight doesn't work with Edge, so anyone watching Amazon Prime instant video will need a workaround. Some features I'm really not interested in like xbox & the news feed & would like to remove them but can't find a way of doing it so any pointers would be appreciated. But on the whole the upgrade was reasonably painless, the result looks OK, the PC isn't running like a drugged slug & things seem reasonably easy to find, so thumbs up from me.
  14. Mod Note The topic concerns an american police officer being charged with murder for the shooting of an unarmed black man. If you wish to discuss other matters do so in another thread. 22. Mod Note Posts removed for deliberate misquoting. When quoting other users you may highlight sections for emphasis or trim out sections for brevity, you may also split a single quote into several quotes to answer points in each. You may not do anything which changes the meaning of the quote such as adding smileys, changing punctuation or spelling and you may not put your replies within the quote. If you have the slightest doubt whether you will be changing the meaning of a quote with your editing then don't edit the quote as doing so may lead to your account being suspended.
  23. Mod Note As I posted earlier but some of you seem to have missed Speculating on whether a particular user is someone who's re registered is off topic and also falls under the umbrella of discussing moderation, either of which are grounds for having your account suspended. So kindly cease and desist with such speculation. If you have grounds to suspect a particular user is someone who has re registered then report one of their posts and tell us who you think it is and we'll have a look at them. Please note this does not mean they'll be automatically suspended, it means we'll check them out. If we can't find any evidence to support your suspicion then we'll leave them alone and we expect you to do the same. Now if you choose to ignore this warning you will find your account suspended.
  24. Mod Note The original thread has been removed as it degenerated into yet another cyclist vs driver argument Original post has been included for the information it contained.
