  1. Well that discussion was six months ago. Now we are trying to save the fireplace.
  2. The first Carr recorded at Wadsley Bridge was 1276 so the history goes back further than many other protected heritage sites in Sheffield. The least we can do is make sure this fireplace is protected.
  3. Yorkshire Wildlife Park is getting better and better. There is of course the lion enclosures the meercats, and the walk though the lemur enclosures to name but a few, but also a great woodland adventure playground and another playground for younger children. Soon they will be showing a Tiger pair as part of a Tiger conservation scheme. Easy distance to get to so no children spending hours saying are we there yet.
  4. I understood it was illegal to sell things on Easter Sunday. Not the catering part but actually the shop part. Are you exempt because you are a charity.
  5. I support the Sainsburys/Fletchers project on Penistone Road North, not least for its job opportunities. But there is a side of this that causes some concern. The development will require the demolition of the Travellers Inn, one of the few remaining focal points of the old Wadsley Bridge. In particular a fitting location has to be found for its handsome stone fireplace (above), bearing the initials GC ( The fireplace was saved and incorporated in a rebuild of the pub in the 19th century. Kelham Island Museum and Museums Sheffield have been approached over the fireplace, which Sainsbury's say can be salvaged. It's a pity it could not be incorporated in, say, a restaurant in the new development or in the dining area in Weston Park. The main thing is that this piece of 300-year-old 'made in Sheffield' heritage should be saved. After all, we've striven night and day to save Park Hill! The fireplace is dated 1697 and bears the initials of George Carr who owned an inn on the site of the present Travellers Inn. The Carr family had connections with Wadsley since the 13th century and this is one of the few remaining Historic items of Wadsley's past left. David Blunkett and Councillor Roger Davison are amongst supporters who have made representations. You can add your support by emailing Councillor Davison [email protected] I suggest something on the lines of: Historic fireplace at theTravellers Inn, Wadsley Bridge I would like to express my support for the attempt to save this piece of Sheffield's history. Not much time left I'm afraid (deadline28th April) so if you want to help, do it now.
  6. Pack a picnic and go to one of the parks. Plenty to choose from.
  7. You can get one at Sainsbury's Homebase I think. Wooden props are no use if you don't have space to store them. If you leave them outside all the time they rott and end up with slugs climbing up and down them. A telescopic one is better as you can store it indoors when you are not using it.
  8. I would talk to the Royal Society for the Blind. They will be able to put you on touch with others like you and also give you information and assistance. The organisation is not only for those who are totally blind. It's for all people with severe sight impairment or have a degenartive condition. My niece found them very helpful.
  9. Yes but if your house is badly wired you don't expect the electrician to just stand there and go on about the previous electrician pull out all the wiring and then go back to telling you it is all the previous electricians fault without fixing anything.
  10. I think I would vote for anyone who could manage a whole conversation without saying "because of the previous administration". This seems to be a politicians way of saying I shall do what I damn well like and if anyone asks me to explain myself instead of explaining my plans or my reasons for doing something or what my future plans are I shall say every second sentence its the previous administration's fault. If ever there was a time I felt like throttling a politician its when I hear the same old phrase coming out instead of saying what they will do. My son is making bets on how many times a politician can blame the previous government in 5 minutes. Almost 75% of talk is about previous government. Have the Con Lib Dems realised they are actually in government? They sound more like the oposition. We know Nick Clegg forgot he was deputy prime minister and went on holiday abroad when Cameron had left the country so he obviously doesn't believe he is in government, but you think Cameron would have clicked on to it yet and actually laid out future economic strategies. Heaven help us if we get a council like that. No policies just a schoolboy pout saying I didn't do it, it was him over there.
  11. Well these so called clever companies are going to be well and truly stumped now because a man can be a father at any age from 14-100 So are they only going to employ only elderly women then?
  12. Probably not a lot of difference as the cuts are nationally led not locally so whoever is in council will still have to carry out the cuts whether they like it or not. Possibly they will try and prioritize rather than cut the same from every organisation. I hope so because at present organisations which are more efficient suffer more than inefficient organisations because they have nothing left to cut whereas the inefficient logically have plenty they can cut. I tell you one thing about AV i will vote for it if it stops parties always spending more time on blaming the other party than actually telling us what they will do.
  13. Strictly speaking there was more than one civil war. There was the war between Matilda and Stephen, and then the War of the Roses and then the 2 Civil Wars in the 17th century that now are lumped together known as the English Civil War. But Hey who's counting?
  14. I've found he was born in 1876, Mother's name Jane but can't find him in trade directory. Notice a Beckworth Hayes left by ship but don't have any more details. He seems to have been born in Norton Lees district but may be wrong on that. Can't find any details to tie him to either house but will have to dig more deeply.
  15. I think the real answer is we don't know what Labour is going to do which is very worrying because this is how the Con/Lib Dem coalition behaved for several months after being in government and they still answer every question with what the previous government did rather than go straight to the point and say what they are going to do. I know politicians are not known for their straight talking but this lack of any real talking by any politician is not helping. What happened to policy documents and manifestos and I don't just mean Labour. Isn't about time we got clear statements of what they actually want to do?
  16. I do blame the council for their behaviour. Whether or not there needs to be cuts is another debate. My main complaint is that this is not an honest way of dealing.
  17. There has been some confusion over the Mayfield Centre. Schools who usually book the centre found that it was not apparently open for booking. It's details had been removed from all council sites. Yet everyone was told it was not being closed. Staff have been told they can only have guaranteed employment for 3 months. When enquiries were made it is claimed the removal was an oversight but in any case only 20 schools use the centre. What was not said was 20 schools use it several times in a year and quite possibly more would use it if they knew about it. No one who hadn't booked it in the past did know as all traces had been removed. Help Mayfield stay open as it is a wonderful resource which should be expanded not shut down.
  18. There are 2 Lees. Lees Hall or Lees House.I would imagine it was Lees House as Lees Hall was more of a farm. Lees House was near Meersbrook Park. between the park and Norton Lees Church. It was a big House but has been knocked down. The outer walls still remain. Do you know the man's name?
  19. If you find anything else interesting there besides garden tool there do tell me. I am working on the history of Norton Lees and I am looking for evidence of old buildings not on any map and signs of metal working ie processed iron ore etc.. So anyone in Norton Lees that has found such in their garden or their allotment or any other strange item please let me know.
  20. I am not saying it will be easy but if it is having a major impact on your life and ability to work you are entitled.
  21. I would say definitely yes but do get someone to help you fill in the form to make sure you miss nothing. Its based on a point system and you need to make sure you don't understate your problems or you may fail because they don't realise how severe your problems are.
  22. Boris Johnson has never struck me as the person to stick up for ordinary people. Seems there's more to this man than meets the eye. Sore a great discussion in the Thursday Night Live programme where economist totally shot down daily mail journalist about cuts, saying 1 we couldn't ever become like Greek economy because they had an already weak structure before the banks crisis, and that it made no sense to be in a hurry to pay off all the loans because that was completely against how most countries worked. Basically she was saying it is like having a mortgage. As long as you have the means to pay it off in regular installments there's no need to panic and in fact the majority of the government loans taken out would be paid off fairly soon under the payments plan. I suppose she was basically saying that it is a bit like a home owner waking up one day and saying I owe £100,000 on this mortgage I must pay it off in the next six months, we shall just have to cut back on food and getting new shoes for the children till its paid off.
  23. They are being processed by an American owned company not in the USA. Like every time the government employs a private company it is likely to be very costly and a complete botch up. When will they learn. Think of Housing Benefit, Exam papers, you name it and next someone will find all our private data accessed because someone forgot to make it secure.
