  1. Has anyone used a financial adviser recently in Sheffield whom they would recommend? I'm after using someone to deal with my pension. Any recommendation for someone with a good track record for pensions investments in the current climate would be appreciated.
  2. As you drive past Trinity United Reform church on Ecclesall Road, the cross is David Mellor's. As is the design of every traffic light around the city and the country. As were design of most of the over head street lights. As were the design of most city bust stops before they were replaced with the current plastic-fantastics. As were the city's park benches. As is the candelabra that's been in Sheffield Cathedral since the 60's. We should commemorate and be more aware of what he accomplished, the beauty he brought and the skill he displayed coupled with south yorkshire reticence. Oh, and he made some really nice cutlery that still puts Sheffield on the map. RIP
  3. Any idea where is best in central or SW Sheffield to get a butane gas BBQ refill. I have a 15kg calor gas cylinder in need of a refill.
  4. I'm guessing it's a self propelled petrol model and not one you ride on. Oil needed may vary depending on the engine on your mountfield. Most mountfields have briggs and stratton engines. Some more modern ones have mountfield own branded engines. Most take any SAE 30 oil, but may not be appropriate for all.
  5. Many thanks and I didn't know cardboard was a viable alternative!
  6. Anyone have any experience of using black plastic to cover their site as a weedkiller? I'm toying with the idea of using it to deprive the site (or at least parts of it) from sunlight for long enough so everything dies. I can then start fromm scratch. This would avoid the need to use chemicals. If so, (1) how long is long enough to leave it covered to achieve what I want; and (2) anyone know how long you can leave your site covered rather than actually using it without getting into trouble? One hopes the answers to (1) and (2) are the same!
  7. If you're a band that only does covers you presumably want something that 1) people might remember; 2) indicates the genre of music you do; 3) suggests you're a cover band. My suggestion - Indie Echo
  8. I looked at it when considering places for the Weevil nuptials. Unfortunately it wasn't the right size for us and didn't have enough accommodation near enough. The access for anyone in a wheelchair etc was, from memory, quite poor if this might be a problem for you or your guests. They seemed quite organised though.
  9. I'm less than impressed by Sheffield's recycling policy. Before moving to Sheffield, my local council had a policy whereby Onyx picked up normal waste once a week and recycled waste once a week. All household waste that you thought you could recycle (tin cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard) was placed in orange plastic biodegradable bags together. You could get the orange bags for free from libraries or the council house and you left them out with the normal rubbish. The Onyx then took away the normal waste and the orange sacks to the recycling centre where they sorted them and recycled as appropriate. This was an excellent system. It didn't have any of the problems of the Sheffield system; if you had a lot of recyclable waste, you simply used more orange sacks; Onyx didn't refuse to take them saying they're too full, contain the wrong stuff etc. Because it was so easy recycling rates went through the roof as most people had, for example, a main kitchen bin and a second recycling bin with an orange bag. Interestingly I also paid substantially less for my council tax. Anyone know why Sheffield won't adopt this system - or is TeaFan correct?
  10. Why are you going to speak to people at the mosque? If you saw a group of white chavs causing trouble would you go into the nearest church to ask the vicar to sort them out? Having a word with the police is probably the best bet. Something similar may already have happened and adding your very good description may well assist in more ways than you know.
  11. Here's a curious question. If people move in next door to you, do you reckon it's best to: 1) pop around an introduce yourself; 2) expect them to pop around and introduce themselves to you (you've lived there longer); 3) find some excuse to meet them when they are leaving their house to say hello; and 4) do nothing, ignore them. When they've lived there for years they might have earned the right to have you acknowledge them with a quick nod in the morning. Just curious to know what other posters think is appropriate in this increasingly insular day and age.
  12. That'd be City Hall you can see if you're going down the only road I've ever known...
  13. I think there's a typo in your post - surely the inclusion of "un" is accidental? Does that mean the person who you were going to go with is thinking "Here I go again on my own"?
  14. I had heard the southern affectation of including "r"s in words (I think this is called non-rhotic dialect) is something picked up as fashionable in previous centuries. Not sure which century - some time ago. The southern upper classes adopted it as the way to speak. The north's pronounciation remained constant. I guess the newer affected way of speaking never got as far as including every word with an "a" in it. As the above is half remembered from some time ago, happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows about these things.
  15. I'm looking to do an RYA dinghy sailing course towards the end of June. Anyone know of any relaxed sailing clubs in and around Sheffield that might offer something suitable? Something at about the "pottering around on a boat" level.
