  1. It's dropped about half a degree in the last hour. By midnight I reckon it will be freezing and will struggle to get above there right until tomorrow noon. Worse than last weeks conditions.
  2. Exactly, and it was raining before it snowed so most of it will have been washed away. They can only do so much, though they should have saved most of their man power to plough and grit through the night (you'd hope they have?). We are in the middle of a mass of snow, mostly falling about 4mm per hour but anything up to 2" per hour in flurries. Hard to tell what is behind that as it is not snowing over the Irish Sea much but instead is waiting until landfall before it starts to snow, so at the moment we aren't getting much warning at all about what it will be like beyond 1 hour in front.
  3. Just been out for the past half an hour gritting the road and paths. Really weird conditions, it is very slushy on the ground but the flakes are getting bigger and the wind is blowing them about.. and there is some snow thunder going on! It needs to get a couple of degrees colder to really freeze and cause problems (which it will later). A car has just crashed into a house at the top of my road on the corner.. bumper missing, police in attendance. It's slushy but dangerous, so be careful out there.
  4. Evening Bravo They are West North Westerly indeed, so we are getting light snow where we would be having nothing and there is another front about half an hour ago that should throw some heavy snow down. The main bulk though looks like it will be from about 5am, and could cause real problems in rush hour. Worth keeping a very close eye on as it is developing all the time.
  5. I'm not sure but even if it is, looking at the map I doubt it will be in an hour
  6. It's absolutely my pleasure. If it helps one person make a decision about a journey that makes them safer then it is completely worth it
  7. If anyone wants to look for themselves you can use either: http://www.ukweatherforecast.co.uk/weather-radar/ http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observation/map/gcqzy90v8#?map=Rainfall&fcTime=1422431100&zoom=8&lon=-1.47&lat=53.40 According to those radars, the West and North of Sheffield should be getting brief blizzard conditions any minute, and there's plenty where it came from behind it..
  8. Elderly and/or infirm people shouldn't have to go out when the weather is bad like that. My neighbour falls into the vulnerable category and I make sure I go round whenever the power is out and give him candles, or grit his front and back paths in ice and snow and have been known to do his shopping for him too. It's a pity that not everyone manages to do that for their neighbours, really. ---------- Post added 28-01-2015 at 20:04 ---------- **UPDATE** The winds have indeed started to blow slightly more Southerly and so we will be getting the snow that is currently in the Irish Sea, north of Lancashire (if it stays that way). Not only is there more of it, but it's twice as heavy currently. If it stays that way even only for the next hour or two then we'll certainly see the difference and people at the semi-final might encounter difficulty getting home. I'll be on here most of the night I imagine, I'll keep you all updated!
  9. I think deep down we all want that Though for those who want a snow day tomorrow it's not looking great as the front is coming over exclusively West to East, and there's less unstable cloud mass directly West than there is to the North West, so we need to winds to change slightly to drag some down from further North. Then we'll be nailed on for a snow day I reckon. Just been out and looked East, completely clear sky. Looked West and it's exclusively white, it's definitely going to start snowing pretty heavy shortly although it will only be a shower and there isn't much behind it at the moment..
  10. Good evening all - been in from work about 10 minutes. There's a really heavy band going to pass over Sheffield in the next half hour, the snow is going to be patchy in nature last week but each front that comes over will be heavier than last week. I'll have a bite to eat and get sat down and look at the radars and data and see how bad it might be and whether we look like it settling etc, but there is going to be heavy snow starting quite soon for all of Sheffield.
  11. I've managed to get called in last minute to a new job yesterday (yay me!) so I'll be out until about 6pm. With the snow forecast to start at 8pm I'm hoping to be able to have a look and get some idea just how bad it might be, but having just walked the dog it is very windy and cold out there already. I don't know how long the gritters can be on the road for but it could potentially snow for the best part of 24 hours, so there's a chance of disruption, especially during rush hour etc.
  12. There was no pun intended there! Hi Rawson. It is currently just South of Greenland, according to the shipping websites it is producing 50+ mph winds and the pressure is nudging up just slightly. There is a smaller front just in front of it but they expect them to merge into one large high pressure system. It will pass North of Scotland but the isobars are tightly compacted which mean winds will be strong and there will be two very quick fronts that pass over one after the other on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The first one will produce rain which will wash away any existing grit and this will probably turn to snow as the temps drop overnight. The second one will almost certainly bring heavy snow, although how fast it passes over and how much it produces are almost impossible to tell yet. We're still on for snowmen though, yes
  13. I've been given an interview date today of.. you guessed it.. Thursday! I told the girl that it was going to snow but that I live local so it doesn't matter - I can walk there if needed. She seemed a bit confused about how I knew it was going to snow, I don't think she quite believed me I told you so might be a good ice breaker when I get there
  14. Just a quick message to inform that there is a nasty high pressure building over Newfoundland which is going to travel over the Atlantic this week and bring some VERY cold conditions with it. At the moment it looks like we might have all the ingredients for well below freezing temperatures, strong winds and precipitation which could well fall as snow. It should hit Wednesday/Thursday, but that could change so worth keeping an eye on the forecasts over the next few days. Even the Met Office are getting in on the act and predicting snow on Thursday! The strong winds will blow it much further inland this time and the chances of snow days are better than last weeks drop we had.
  15. I suppose it's difficult for them to focus on each area and get it right everywhere, there's so many micro-climates to take into account that locally affect systems as they pass over. So they just issue blanket forecasts that are generally OK but not specific really for anyone. I stopped listening to the Met Office years ago when it comes to snowfall, times and amounts.
  16. I did have a bit of a nap this morning but I've been clearing the road outside and then updating my CV as I am being forced into unemployment soon (what economic recovery?). It's going to continue sleeting all night really and the temps will hover around 1c all night so the snow will very slowly freeze and conditions won't be nice. However the main problem won't be tonight, it will be tomorrow night when it gets to -3c at night and anything that is left on the road will be seriously slippy.
  17. The radar suggests the West of the city is getting snow around 4x heavier than the East side of the city, which is in direct contrast to last night really when it was the other way around. We are about 1/3 of the way into this latest front and the worst is set to hit imminently, where it will be throwing about 6mm per hour down which isn't outrageous but consistent and it will just keep coming. The East will be half an hour or so behind in getting the heavier snow but we aren't out of the woods yet.
  18. I agree with the BBC at this moment in time. The radar shows there will be a gap between the snowfall we have now which will last an hour or two and anything that develops behind it.
  19. Someone has said in the Snow thread that Eckington is closed.
  20. At the junction of Barnsley Road and Burngreave Road. About 100m above sea level which isn't significant in terms of Sheffield and surrounding areas to the West which can be up to 300m+ and are undoubtedly getting it worse than it is here.
  21. I've just been out to clear my missus' car and I started with the back window, down the passenger side, front, drivers side and when I got to the back window again it was completely covered! It has noticeably dropped in temperature and the snow is heavy enough to settle and add volume to what's already fallen. It's going to be difficult in the next hour or two, keep safe everyone.
  22. Yes! A front is just crashing in as we speak that - although it has weakened on it's way up North from a few hours ago - is still capable of dropping enough snow in the next 2 hours to clog things up. The worst of it is actually to our West as Glossop and Manchester are taking a real hammering but we've got about an hour or two of snow just hitting as we speak that will be as heavy as anything we had last night.
  23. Ha, sorry I didn't get an update before the site close. We are at the end of the 2nd front of the night, we'll get flurries but nothing heavy for a good hour or two. About 6am looks interesting as a 3rd front, more dense than the previous two is currently working up and stretches from Stoke-on-Trent right down to Gloucester. I expect some periods of heavy snow during rush hour, which never really works. I'm going to catch a few hours as I'll be getting up with OH, packing her shovel and hot water bottle if her school is open and she has to go in. Could go either way at the moment although I'd say it'll be shut now, that could change in a few hours. Have a few hours rest before the next wave comes in! And get home safely everyone! ---------- Post added 21-01-2015 at 03:55 ---------- In fact, scrap that. I've decided to go for a quick nosey down at Barnsley Rd and Burngreave Rd to see what they are looking like at the mo and how deep the lying snow is on the side streets, first.. ---------- Post added 21-01-2015 at 04:09 ---------- Okay. As of 4am the depth of snow in S3 is about 2 inches on the ground. Roads are covered and where tyres have gone over the snow the compacted snow has frozen and is very slippy. BE VERY CAREFUL. Underneath the snow on windscreens the windscreens aren't frozen which is a good thing. Barnsley Rd and Burngreave Rd, both priority roads for the hospital have been cleared by ploughs. They initially looked OK but closer inspection shows them to be very slushy and I've just seen a police car almost go into a lamp post, so conditions are far from ideal. Let's give credit to the gritters who are trying their best to keep the main routes open though. In summary people are going to have problems getting off their drives and roads but with care will probably be okay AT THIS POINT. However another couple of hours of temperatures slightly below freezing as they are now will probably make side roads a little trickier and dangerous. Added the snow that is due in a few hours and we have potential for problems, especially in that period where the gritters and ploughs won't be able to get through traffic. Hope this helps, be safe!
  24. I am not at High Green but I can confirm Barnsley Road is down to 5mph even for ambulances with lights flashing, as snow is covering the main roads and settling. There's about an inch out there now, with plenty more to come in the next hour. You'd be better sticking to the M1, might be worth looking at M1 traffic cameras?
  25. The North and West seem to be escaping the worst at this moment in time, although in 30-60 minutes there's a heavier patch that will bring some heavy snow for that area too. Looks like we might miss the main part of this front that we are currently in as it is tracking up the M1 and to the East of Sheffield in the main, though E Sheff and Rotherham could be looking at loads. The main worry is what is behind it, there's a gap of a few hours where the services have an opportunity to plough the roads before we get the worst of what we're due. That one could go either way but there's so much heavy rainfall in the south that will be snow here it's difficult to see us not getting a bit of a hammering.
