  1. Definitely my first car - a blue/silver/rust 1979 Talbot Horizon that I bought at auction. Maximum speed 32 MPH with the wind behind. It only lasted 18 months before it died, and I remember visiting it twice at the scrap yard on Barrow Road (once was to remove the radio!!). Currently drive a new Picasso, which is great for transporting the kids, but it doesn't have the character of my little Horizon.
  2. He will probably be out in a month or a little longer for good behaviour. They should throw away the key.
  3. Thanks for all the words of comfort and support everyone. Lotti, I cried buckets watching rainbow bridge. We lost our other dog Meg 9 months ago (aged 15), she had a tumour under her tongue. I still regret leaving her 3 days too long before I had her put to sleep. I know I was keeping her alive for our sake, not hers and was determined that when Rosie's time came I wouldn't do the same. Rosie sat on the table and leaned her little body into me and waited calmly while William shaved her leg and injected her.Staying with her and letting my voice be the last thing she heard as she slipped away was the last kindness I could do for her, though it broke my heart. I truly believe she was telling me she had enough. Thanks again everyone.
  4. My little dog died today. She was almost 16 years old, and her heart just wasn't coping any more. I think she had had enough as she stopped eating several days ago, and she refused to get off the settee (except for the call of nature). It is the hardest thing in the world to take your much loved pet to the vet to ask them to administer a lethal dose of anaethetic, then stay with them whilst they go to sleep. The guilt about 'killing' her is awful, even though in my heart of hearts, I know I did the kindest thing for her. I have to say that William (vet at Springfield's in Firth Park) was wonderful, he is kind and compassionate, and I wouldn't want anyone else to look after my pets. Sorry, this is a bit of a conversation stopper but I feel really sad today.
  5. I also did the Star Walk a couple of times to raise money for charity (as I suspect did most people). People are talking as though it finished somewhere in the dim and distant past. I did the walk within the last 13 years, so it's not been finished for that long. I seem to remember it was about 12 miles long, and doing it without any practise was a bit mad, as it was difficult to walk properly for a couple of days afterwards!
  6. Hi Mick I live in Sheffield but work in Rotherham. If I ever decide to move there I think I would go to Thorpe Hesley or Broom. There are good and bad parts of all estates (like Sheffield). Avoid East Dene/Herringthorpe/Dalton.
  7. The "scum" quote originally came from Internetowl. I am apparently scum because I am prepared to walk through a picket line.
  8. I was interested to read that 51% of school staff will be turning up to work, as the information I have been sent says that nationally, the votes in favour of strike action are as follows: UNISON 78% GMB/APEX 82% T&G 80% UCATT 90% AMICUS 88% It seems to me that these numbers don't tally! Maybe the people in favour of strike action are the ones who fancy a skive off work for a day, and by being off, the lives of others won't be placed in possible danger. In my place of work, less than 2% voted to strike, certainly not the 78% as indicated above. This scum will definitely still be working on Tuesday, but I will respect the rights of others to do as they see fit. I certainly won't be reduced to name calling as InternetOwl seems to feel the need to do.
  9. I will be working too. Although I don't work in school, I do work with vulnerable people (within the public sector)who would be left without support if scum like me didn't walk through picket lines. I'm more concerned for the safety of these people than worrying about the opinions of others.
  10. I have to say the midwife who delivered my son was wonderful - she was a student, but very confident and capable. It was only when transferred to the ward that things deteriorated. The worst part was when I was re-admitted with the infection. My baby was admitted as a 'visitor'. He cried all night on the first 2 nights when I was most ill, and the only time I saw a midwife was when my IV antibiotics were being administered. At no point did a midwife say let me hold your baby while you get some rest. I was ill, tearful with a 4 day old screaming baby. Unfortunately I am very independent and it was over my dead body I was going to ask for help (although I would have snatched their hand off if they had offered). The most frustrating bit was when I went for a walk past the nurses station with the baby, they were all sitting chatting. I would not recommend Jessops to anyone. The only thing I would recommend, is take your own Dettol wipes! My experience in the NGH 4 years earlier, however, was wonderful in comparison.
  11. Within 5 days of giving birth to my little boy (now 4) I was back in Jessops with a severe infection. At this time I was given a room to myself and was appalled at the cleaner. She came in with her mop, swished it around for a minute and left. She didn't clean the toilet, the flush handle or the door handles. Surely with all the blood that is around in the place, this is just basic hygiene? It's a lovely new building but I have to say I wasn't impressed with the place. Come back Northern General all is forgiven!
  12. Where at Kimberworth is the house? There are parts that are very nice but others that aren't as desirable.
  13. I was at Hinde House between 77-81. By far the best teacher there was Steve Chisnall (English), he was only there for a couple of years before moving on to do something in the RAF (I think).
  14. It's funny you should mention that. I remember several years ago (in Wincobank) we heard a similar noise and couldn't identify where it was coming from. We stood in the garden in our pjs to narrow the location down but it was all around. We only heard it a few nights. Several months later there was a documentary on telly about it but (sorry) I can't remember what was they said it was! I do remember that they said that not everyone could hear it, but there had been most reports of the sound coming from the Bristol area. Sorry that's no help at all apart from you aren't going mad!!!
