  1. HI, I used to go dancing there in1945, when it was like the City Hall, full of yanks, and english lads did'nt have a chance of a pull, about that time a man named Brindle was the landlord, can't recall his first name, but very strangely we met him and his wife in an hotel in 1984 [which was his local], on the outskirts of Christchurch where they had retired to, l did'nt know him, we had exchanged the usual chitchat when he said are you from Sheffield "l nearly dropped" how did you know that l said,l was expecting him to say "your accent" but his reply was, just a guess really, l saw your Sheffield registration number as you drove in, during the chat, he never said anything about ghosts, but he was to come in there the next night and bring photos of the Norton Hotel, as it was called in those days, but as we were off the next morning so we never saw them. Cheers Arfer Mo.
  2. HI Paul. lv'e read most of your threads and answers, have you decided? nobody will do that for you, but don't leave it too late like me, l was 80 when l sold up and followed my sons and grandkids and came to S/West France, don't let anyone try to tell you they do not like the French, as you will know its who you fall out with individually and not the country they live in, l have yet to dislike any French person in over 7 years, if your'e retired and ready for some peace and quiet l can recommend the rural area of France, you can take your pick lots to chose from, l don't know where you live Paul, but if say youre in the middle bracket of the average working mans home,if you sold i'ii bet you would be able to get a much better home and end up with at least double your bank balance, thats on average. l bought almost an acre of almost level land and had a 2 bed bungalow built with a 12 ft wide and 20ft long garage on this site complete with small swimming pool, and a third of it to garden and fruit trees and more than doubled mine. Cheers and good luck what ever you decide. yours Arfer Mo.

  6. HI Cooking Fat. l read your post about the Prince Of Wales, and you named Freddie as his surname being Johnston, are you sure about this, as the landlord in the 50/60ties was named Freddie Keen. His father used to be landlord of the Angel Inn at the corner of Button Lne and the Moor, a famed football captain, and had the same name, Freddie went to keep the Mossbrook after the Prince, my brother Lewis and l went to see him there a few times.Cheers Arfer Mo.
  7. HI Yes l remember all that you say about outside LAV'S as we called them including the exquisite toilet paper, which was my job for a year or two to supply [newspaper on a string], a little later when i wanted extra spending money, whitewashing the walls, when it was our turn, oh yes ! we shared with another house, l will fill your dots, [l dont think] Cheers Arfer Mo.

  10. HI sneaks, Your user name urged me to recall a time around 1956/9 when an estate agent named wilson and burley whom i did repair work for offered me a house at Allnic rd, which had been refused a mortgage due to subsidence, l took the keys and went to look,l went back to Campo Lane and agreed a price with Mr Burley and gave him a deposit in good faith this was Friday night, on the next Wed; i went to have a further look and there was an old man lighting the fire when asked who he was said he worked for Ervine Patnick, when l looked into this he had contacted the owner after Burley told him it was sold and offered a bit more and the owner accepted it was a typical example of the sharp practice that breed of man is renowned for, Arfer Mo
  11. HI I remember the man selling quack medecine, one of his spiels was selling worm mixture he went on something like this +If you see that kiddie scratching its bum, picking its nose, that child has got worms, take this mixture to clear it+ever after when l picked my nose his words used to haunt me . l also used to get wieghed on the brass scales, and then on to to the watch and clock shed with its awning,l once bought a watch it lasted a week when l went back he said have you sent off the guarantee "l didn't get one " he went just out of sight and came back with some printed matter in Japanese' he said get it translated ,[ one of the rag and tag cons], just round the corner was the pets building a big square whitewashed place, you got a similar excuse if you went back there, then on to have a look at pottie Edwards, what skill he had ,all this was before the war started.Arfer Mo

  21. HI. Its almost 75 years since I was on the hill, l remember those concrete and brick structures, they was a little damaged especiallyon the edges so they would most likely have been used for something for the 1914 War. Cheers Arfer Mo.

  23. HI Bowden Housteader's [still off topic,] but the difference of names for this estate made me smile, l did quite a lot of jobs on those houses in the fiffties, and the confusion of names was still on the go then. I was recommended by the local plumber Jim Hawksworth who lived in the first pair of semi's on the corner of Houstead Rd as one approached from Handsworth Rd. I have not been that way for over fifty years, l remember the neat grass verges and the general tidyness everywhere and a lot of houseproud people, and jolly Mrs Cocker for whom l first built an out shot bay to the kitchen, as one of a few on the estate but age has dulled my memory,l used to know many by name, Anyhow all the best to all of you, and hope the dogs quieten down. Cheers Arfer Mo.
  24. HI Dean1, my uncle fell in France ,but l don't know when, all l can say is his name, Albert Fearnehough, born and bred in Sheffield, if you come across any details l would appreciate an answer. all the best with your project Cheers Arfer Mo.
