  1. hi, the name is marie barnes went to waltheof school straight from darnall church in 1960, my last teacher was mr edwards he was a lovely teacher which is more than what i could say for poslthwaite i don't think anyone liked him. i've still got my school leaving report it's like a little grey book and it looks a bit weathered. i was only there 3 month then i left to start work i hated it there it wasn't a patch on darnall church. my best school mates was a girl called sandra whose mother use to work at sutherlands and a girl called anne they both lived on the dead end streets on darnall main road behind davey uniteds. one lived at the top end of darnall main rd just before the bridge that was anne and the other lived at the bottom opposite doreen crookes hairdressers. both these roads was on the right hand side going up. you may have been in the same class as me .
  2. hi, I can remember all those names, but i'm a bit muddled up as to where they are, was rock carrs at the top of wreakin place on weedon st. i think brays back use to look down our yard, there was 2 yards seperated by a little road in the middle with an alley way at the back, there fronts use to be on weedon st. i think rock carrs use to be at the top of the other yard. i can't remember woodbines chippy. aldridges i think was on the corner of dunlop st and weedon st. jim streets i remember the name but can' remember where it was unless i've got mistaken with rock carrs. it's all so many years ago as i am now sixty and i left down there when i was 4 years old, but i went down there a lot to visit my eldest sister iris, i'm the youngest. when i lived there my mam had one room downstairs and 2 up she use to rent the other room downstairs to an old women but can't remember her name. do you remember anyone called brian hamer i think thats how you spell it he was a tall fella i use to call his dad uncle edgar he was like a father to me as my father died when i was 3. my first job at leaving school was at cooper and turners i wanted to be an hairdresser but we needed the money at the time so i finneshed up there i think all our family worked there at some time or other. well we've gone a long way since then cos we now have lived in portugal for the last 11 years, but i would love to come back to sheffield again, there's nowhere like sheffield, i say sheffield cos it's the best place in the country and i should know cos i've travelled the legnth and breadth of britain and the people are the best. i've been back a couple of times to visit my son and relations. the city's changed but not the people.were stuck here because over here it's difficult to sell houses.
  3. hi, i'm new to sheffield forum. my maiden name was barnes was born at wreakin place no. 15 opposite staybrite works on weedon st. mam and dads name was evlyn and george, there was edna jim and iris who married bill fox, she lived there for years right up to the house coming down for dereliction then went to live at tinsley at the side of pike and heron. when i was a kid mam use to take us into banners for my whitsuntide cloths and i remember the money shutes as i use to call them i use to stand gob smacked at them cos i never new where they went to. my sister use to go to mugs alley 2 or 3 times a week and sometimes she'd take me with her they use to skate down to the botton and then spin round a pole at the end and then up again. someone asked where the docters was on cliffe well i think it was chippingham lane at the back of banners it was then dr. lee and his daughter babara lee, i wouldn't go to see dr. lee just his daughter cos he was very abrupt and it made me a bit frightened of him. when i was four we moved up to firth park for a couple of years and then on to darnall i eventually married into the roddis family of coleford road they lived at no. 57 the name was lucy and aurthur they were well known round there, lucy's sister madge had the green grocers just round the corner. from firth park we moved on to cravens rd no 103 right opposite the army barracks next to the butchers . when i was courting we use to go to the plaza every week cos you could have a private box in there on our way home we use to walk home and call for cod and chips at a chippy just past the aquaduct club. well i could go on and on and on but i won't. i'll leave it for now . bye everybody.
