Hi jiginc, The medical center at Newton Chambers was built in wartime. It was called the Casualty Clearance Center and was put underground to protect against air-raids. It was reputed to be bomb proof. 200 yds further up the road was a factory making tanks so air-raids were expected at any time. There is always an explanation to the strangest things.

A few years ago I was listening to a discussion on Radio Sheffield about accents. Tony Capstick was talking to an American girl about her study of accents and dialect. She said that in the USA there was only four or five different accents across the whole country and that she had heard four or five different accents over ten miles in this country. Dont be ashamed of your accent, it is part of your heritage.Be proud of it ,use it, preserve it for future generations.

I wasnt given a religion, was never baptised, and never seen the need for one. When half the worlds religions are trying to wipe out the other half then I think I will remain neutral. Instead of preparing for a happy and glorious afterlife we should concentrate on getting this one right. As the man said "This is not a rehearsal". Sheffield should invest in some big cats-lions and tigers and the like, and release them every night around the Manor and Pitsmoor areas. Just a thought.

I closed my own newsagents down last year-nothing to do with any rent, as I own the property. Shopping habits have changed with the times, supermarkets have seen to that. One supermarket replaces dozens of small shops. Its the end of an era, the corner shops are closing all over the country. I think we will be sadly missed. [ my shop had traded since 1928]
