  1. I did,nt know Malcolm Mercer personally but he attended Pipworth Rd School so i imagine that he lived at the lower Manor end ,He was also Head teacher at Parson Cross School and has written several books about local; historyI have seen several references to Brian Starr, did he have a brother named Bernard ,I know there was a sister called Grace who was a tram clippie during the war. There was also the Stones family who lived at the last house before Fitzhubert Rd.Betty Stones lived there long after the rest of the family had gone
  2. I attended Prince Edward School from 1935-38,during my 3 years there i only had one teacher who was Mr Wright,i learnt a lot from him,the only other teachers i remember from that period was a Mr Gratton the science teacher was (Curly)Middleton who was the only teacher with a car,the woodwork teacher was a Ted Shields and Miss eEliott taught handicrafts
  3. Hi Steve, The cattle from Standhouse farm use to be taken along Waltheof Rd to the fields at the backside of the cemetery, which is a long way from where Waltheof School now stands,I dont know what condition the farm was in ,I was only 5 years old when it was demolished.but i do remember a chap coming round with a milk can and 1/2 pint and pint measures and selling milk
  4. The chip shop on Fairleigh across from the Post Office was kept by Locketts for years before Hagues took over,i used to dash from school on a friday for a pennorth and a penny fish 3 times (with plenty of scraps on),the Post Office was kept by Swanns next door was Smiths green grocery shop, then came Gebhards at the corner of Windy House.Lower down Fairleigh was Broughs grocery shop with Hirsts newsagents, that became a shoe repair shop when Hirsts had a new shop built at the corner of Cullabine Rd Around 1938 On the other side of Fairleigh was the Coop grocery with a chemist shop along side, between there and the Maypole was Airies who ran a firework club for the kids, does anyone remember the bald headed manager in the Maypole it was a treat to watch him with the butter slappers. At the top side of the Graves Trust houses was Watsons sweet shop with a chip shop along side of it,there would be a queue down Wulfric Rd outside Lockets but no one would go to Watsons.Allens butchers Shop was at the corner of Windy House Lane If anyone has,nt read Malcolm Mercers Manor In The Thirties it is well worth reading, that is if it is available now,it was the best Xmas present i had
  5. I had a call from George Holden yesterday to tell me that Fred Harrison passed away earlier in the day (it was the day before his 89th birthday)Fred was shift manager (sample passer) on the new Atlas furnace and had many years servive with Firth Brown. He had,nt been well for a while with dodgy legs and failing eyesight but still made the trip from Middlesboro for the annual re-union at Xmas. Geordie is going to Middlesboro for the funeral.
  6. Hi taine. I am curious regarding you saying that you lived at No1 Firshill Rd ,are you sure that was the right number as the first house on Firshill Rd is No17,i have asked a couple of old timers here and they have no recollection of a No 1
  7. The wooden huts were on Queen Mary Rd on the right hand side ,going up from the pond and just before you came to Wulfric Rd.I believe that there are some flats there now. There were no railings round the pond in the early 30,s There was also a pond where the island is in the middle of the road across from Hagues chip shop (was previous to them it was Lockets for many years)Does anyone remember the coloured family who lived on Waltheof Rd a rare sight in those days, I had contact with the youngest son Warris recently he has been living in Australia over 50 years now.An interesting story regarding them but back in the 1930,s a friend of my dads came to see him but when he got to Waltheof Rd he had forgotten the number of our house,he asked some youngsters "Do you know where Blacks live" Black being our surname yes mester came the reply its that house there,he got the shock of his life when this coloured woman came to the door
  8. My parents went to live on Waltheof Rd in Sept1925 when i was 15 months old(i will be 83 come 1st june) I remember Standhouse Farm being there before the school was built,my first school was the Wooden Huts which was on Queen Mary Rd near to the junction with Wulfric Rd,I went to Standhouse school when that opened the teachers i remember are Miss Vere and Miss Dodds, i got the job of ringing the school bell in a morning mainly because i lived near to the school and because i was a big lad.I then went to Prince Edward School in 1935,where i had a few strokes of the cane from the infamous Percy Sefton, once for breaking a window with a cricket ball. There used to be a Jazz Band go on Waltheof Rd on a sunday morning all dressed in multi coloured clothing, they went down to play in a field at the back of the cemetery ,which was duly named as the jazz band field
  9. The thing i remember most about old Sheffield was the fairground that came at Xmas time when several small fairs joined to gether and they filled the fairground which was on Blonk Street along side the Victoria Station drive'My Dad always used to go on the Shamrock which was a big cage which swung over the River Don,i used to be scared in case it came off and landed in the Don and they got drowned. My Dad usually won a coconut for us, a rare treat in those days.Along with my mates we walked to town and used to stand at the top of the toilet steps in Fitzalan Square asking the men as they came up the steps"Have you got a cigarette card please mester",hoping we would get one of a famous footballer. We used to make our own entertainment in those days but never got into trouble like they do now with the excuse they are bored
  10. in the early 1930,s i was living on the manor and the only decent football pitch was at Ridgeway, there was a house on ridgeway Rd named EMOHYM we used to say that a chinaman lived there it was years later that i realised it was My Home spelt backwards

  13. i believe Wilson,s butchers used to be Ernest Allen who kept the shop for many years. He had 2 assistants(one named Charlie and the other Harold) who started working there as youths when E,Allen retired he set up one of the Lads (Wilson)in his shop and the other opened a butchers shop on the lower Manor shopping centre

  18. I posted a thread on here weeks ago that the bus lane in Burngreave Rd was a complete waste of money as it is one of the best free flowing roads into Sheffield, until this past couple of weeks i have never seen any traffic conjestion,if anywhere in that area needed changes it is at the Pitsmoor Rd,Minna Rd junction or from Fir Vale up to Scott Rd
  19. I received a card through the post informing me that they had been unable to deliver a parcel at 12-30pm the previous day, which i strongly dispute as there was 4 of us sat in the room at that time plus a very alert dog and never heard a sound,if they did try to deliver why was,nt the note pushed through the door as they usually do,it seems to me they are simply asking people to collect to save them delivering.People have paid postage to have them delivered
  20. My grandson who is London born and bred wished to make a career in the police and as he was getting married and could not afford to buy a house in London he bought one here and applied to join the south yorks police,he made several visits to sheffield for tests all at his own expence and passed them all but after waiting 2 years and the only responce he got to his enquiry was "We will let you know when we want you" he decided to look elsewhereThe south yorks police has too many chief,s and not enough indians ,why do we need a deputy chief constable and 4 assistant chief constables when the chief constable has enough spare time to take another job on with road traffic
  21. I received a card this morning through the post informing me that they tried to deliver a parcel at 12-30pm yesterday which i 100% dispute as there was 4 of us sat in the room plus a very watchful dog at that time ,if they did try to deliver why did,nt they put the card through the door instead of posting it they now want me to go to Pond St, to collect but why should i pay bus fare to go when there has been postage paid for them to deliver i also posted a xmas card which was larger than the normal ones so i took it in the post office and it was 44p, it would have gone easily for a 2nd class stamp previously, bring back the scouts post
  22. Over the years i have patronised many pubs but the one that i remember best was the Brunswick on Grimesthorpe Rd ,Dick Finney was the landlord,he and his wife dear old Kath, there are no pubs now that have an atmosphere like the old ones did or beer either for that matter. It has been closed over 30 years now but i still miss it
  23. I joined the Midland bank in 1947 in the Wicker because it was convenient for me when my pay was paid into the bank, then they closed that and transferred to where the Bankers Draft is now that meant a trail up town, from there they moved to Coles corner how many more moves are they going to make. They will be opening a branch in India next because the labour is cheaper there, time i made a change i would think
  24. I used to go to the Manor picture house in the early 1930,s with my mother and dad and my sister, when there was a good film showing the queue used to reach Ridgeway Road,it used to cost a shilling for the 3 of us with a quarter of sweets, 4pence each for mun and dad 2pence for me and carry my sister inplus 2pence for a quarter of sweets the kids matinee on saturday afternoon were great ,they had a serial which always ended with the goodies chasing the badies I well remember Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette in the Phantom Empire. It always started with a cartoon but the 3 Stooges always got the best cheers better than any you heard at bramall lane or owlerton
