  1. i think there is a place on Owler Lane, just around the corner from Page Hall, which is in the same line. Competition right next door might make things difficult.
  2. I think if you look at London, just for example, you see that modern and older buildings can e mixed but it has to be tastefully done. I think that once older building are gone they are gone forever so we should conserve where possible but that doesn't mean I am against tasteful regeneration and development. That shop is just an eyesore.
  3. you could try the ones at Herries Road, Longley, too.
  4. Mr Linacre! Yes, I've nothing but good memories of him. He was my teacher for the obligatory couple of years of woodwork, between 12 and 14, and I really wish I'd taken it further. I seem to remember rumours he was had a karate blackbelt and I recall he had a really deep voice. He also sang bass in Mad Wacko Jacko's (Mr Jackson, the music teacher) choir at one point? A good man. Pass on my best wishes to him, please
  5. Whenever there was snow we would go to one particular hill in Longley Park; there were always plenty there. Near the bottom you went over a path that gave you a right jolt Occasionally you'd see someone skiing in there, which was really showing off a bit as it was only a 15 second run - "Ooh! Look at me, I've got skis!"
  6. Oh, and Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street would be a good place to look, too.
  7. I'd get myself down to Kelham Island Museum, sharpish, as I seem to think they are redeveloping the old Greenups place. Maybe they had the archaeologists in during the re-development?
  8. I know the lead singer of Eat Don't Hula and I think my cousin was their bass player. My cousin was also in another band called Trebound Story who made a bit of a local name for themselves, too. My brother/cousin and their mates knew Richard Hawley well, too. They all used to hang around together.
  9. Thursday evenings at the English Institute of Sport on Attercliffe Common. Phone the reception, there.
  10. What are you looking for? I don't think you're going to get far asking people on here. You're hardly going to get a complete or official picture. If you are aiming to study your family history you should maybe head for Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street and check out the census returns. You may even find that your family is not entirely from Sheffield?
  11. It depends which part of Sheffield you want views of. A good view of the East End can be got from the top of Wincobank Hill.
  12. if that is the same Trade Direct who used to be based on Firth Park Road I have never used them for any mechanics or testing but they messed me around something silly when I ordered a couple of parts from them. I wouldn't use them again. Like I say, though, I can't comment on their workshop.
  13. I love dogs and so I've been watching Crufts but it's the people on there who wind me up. They are so obsessed with their inbred or 'Curly-coated Welsh Water-Poodles' that it makes me wonder what they really get out of owning a dog. A dog is a companion and a cross-breed/mongrel, whatever you like to call them, is as good as any. In fact they often have better tempraments and don't tend to suffer from the serious ailments that "dog-loving" breeders have bred into them over the years in the name of "purity". I really don't like the snobbery associated with it. I grew up with Jack Russells and recently a cross-breed so i admit there may be some bias but I would say I can value a dog more for its inherent value as a companion than for any arbitrary characteristics it may have. I know everyone loves their own dog the most but there are loads of beautiful, good-natured dogs out there in rehoming shelters who i think get overlooked because they aren't pedigrees and I think people who wouldn't consider one of those shold reconsider their reasons for wanting a dog in the first place.
  14. My brother and I had Karate classes there in the early 80s.
  15. Thank you, PT, that is St Luke's, it says so in the description . Thanks ever so much. I didn't know about that website. It could prove very useful indeed for the family history.
