  1. I know where you mean used to be Blenham nursing home think they bought the bungalow next door to.
  2. Thanks for that I must admit I had heard he had a show on Sheffield. Bad time for me however as I am usually out at that time
  3. I think you will find that if a genuine choice were given to retail staff whether they wanted to work on say Boxing day sure you would find some who gladly would many would prefer to have the day off. However as it is one of the most busy days of the year, you need nearly every member of staff in and even then you still get ques as can be seen in Meadowhall for example. You are very lucky that the trade you work in allows you to have all holidays off and pick which hours you work. People who work in retail (and many other jobs for that matter) do not have that luxury and will often work days they would rather have off because they appreciate that that is what the business requires and I think they do deserve some credit for making that sacrifice.
  4. It may be an age thing but my favorite line up was around the time of Keith Skues it would run something like this excuse the spelling Johnny Moran breakfast show Roger Mofat morning Kelly Temple lunch (I think) Ray Stuart afternoon And the best of all had to be Martin Kelner 10-2 very funny guy still hear him now and again on Talk Sport and he writes for the Guardian.
  5. Well said. Retail staff often work very long hours for low pay and usually accept this as it is part of there job. But to say they should work at any time 365 days a year is to say the least a little harsh. These people still have famalies and why should they not have the right to spend some of the holidays at home. Luckily a lot of companys are now starting to appreciate that this is the case and are being more flexable about the hours offered and will often work around school times ect. As a footnote I worked boxind day and only had today off this week and the attitude of most customers was extremly good with most appreciating that you had given up a day with your family to serve them. BTW we did not get a penny over normal rate on boxing day (26th) as it was not a bank holiday.
  6. Lumberjack song my monty python classic.
  7. Tesco has the largest market share of any supermarket in the uk (around 28%) Sainsburys has had a very difficult time in the last few years, in particular problems with a new ordering sysstem has led to shelves being empty.losing market share to Tesco. Sainsburys used to have the largest market share until Tesco overtook a few years ago. In my opinion Tesco has the better storres but the food is better at sainsburys.
  8. Folly foot was good too (showing my age now)
  9. I work in retail and boxing day is one of the biggest turnover days of the year. This year it is not a bank holiday as it is on a sunday monday and tuesday are bank holidays. Because of this many staff who work it do not get a premium rate. In my experience even when staff do get a premium rate on boxing day given a choice they would rather be with there family, however most still work it. Also be aware that due to sunday trading many storres will be open either 10-4 or 11-5.
  10. yeh whatever happened to the likely lads was a classic theme for a classic programme. Z cars was good to.

  15. I thought I was the only one. I nearly always get a cold on either xmas day or boxing day. I put it down too overwork and my imune system being down. Another reason I hate xmas:(
  16. I am curious to know if there is still a cycle run out To Castleton at the weekends. I seem to remember there used to be a regular run that left from ecclesall/whirlow on saturday and sunday morning. Does it still take place? I don't get many weekends off but would be quite interested to meet up. Thanks
  17. Right with you on this Pubs full of people who can not handle their beer. Can't get served at the bar. Drunks. Hard to get taxis. Ques for clubs My favorite time of year is 12th day of xmas as it is nearly a full year before it all starts again and the pubs return to there normal state. Plus I only get xmas day off and pubs are full of people who seem to have about 3 months off:)
  18. Don't get me started on these. I use abbey lane several times a week and it is a very popular route with cyclists particularly at the weekend doing the Castleton run. Since they have put these pinch points in it makes it very dangerous for cyclists as in forces car drivers to make a decision either to slow down or force there way past you. I have emailed the council about this and they replied that when building roads they have to put pedestrians before cyclists. I think they should look at alternative road calming schemes as these are so unfriendly to cyclists. On the subject of hills in Sheffield it is part of the fun of cycling learning to tackle them you need to build your strength gradually but it is very satisfying when you master them. A mountain bike with easy gears can really help with this as long as you cycle slowly they are nowhere near as hard as you may think. The only hill I can not tackle is winatts pass on the road bike man that hill is steep I think it is one of the steepest in the uk. If I remember rightly hard knott pass in the lakes is the steepest.

  20. Remamber the place when it was Berlins and if I remamber rightly when it first opened it was quite upmarket. Went in about a year a go- walked in- bought a drink- walked out again! leaving the drink the palce is a dive
  21. You have to join both clubs. Although they are owned by the same holding company it is something to do with the licencing laws ,thats what I was told by the staff anyway.
  22. As an intermitent regular of Napolians or "naps" as it is known locally I would say it is quite a good place to go for a social late drink. It does have its fair amount of posers but on the whole it is quite a friendly crowd. There is a large bar upstairs with no gambling (apart from the bandit) and a big screeen tv. Friday and saturday nights get very busy but apart from thursday night it tends to be very quiet in the week. The bar is open till 2 am except sundays. Have never seen any trouble as there are loads of bouncers and of course it is a members club. You have to join or be signed in by a member. I would be very careful downstairs as the combination of drink and the excitement of the casino can lead to losing far to much on the tables. I don't go so much at the moment as I am sick of waking up with that 2am hangover thing:)
  23. Working in retail myself I find that nearly all large companys want to give good customer service however this does not always happen and there are several reasons for this One of the key reasons which t1020 touched on is about the staff you employ. One of the best things anyone told me about recruiting is if you want to treat your customers well employ nice people. By nice people I mean people who can remain calm under pressure and can empathise with customers even when they shout abuse at you or are asking for someting unreasonable. Easier said than done have a look around Sheffield there are vacancy notices everywhere. You can often go for weeks with nobody applying for a position and when they do they are often young or not suitable. Ok I hear you say pay more money to get quality staff thats all well and good but will you pay more for the same product if you are servred by better quality staff? I really enjoy working with the public and find sorting a customers problem to there satisfaction very rewarding but it can also be very stressful at times and defnatley does not suit everyone.
  24. I don't mind having a chat but you have to keep giving it that
