  1. If I remember well there was another Fred who was the cod (leading hand) When I was there and Fred Brunt was a lever man along with a guy called Jack who was the other leverman. I do remember your dad but don’t recall his second name. They had another three hammers 2ton 30cwt and 1 ton also they made files at the top side of the works. In the machine shop they had four Alice Chalmer lathes that I believe we’re gun barrel lathes bought for the First World War. The owner when I was there was. Arnold Massey Gamble who lived at Elkesley village and he was the squire of the village. The company got into difficulties and finished up being taken over by Neepsend Steel and Tool. They were good days but hard work.
  2. As a person who used to live round this area as a lad I remember where people are saying the brick company was. ie Kilner way didn’t this used to be a goods yard for the railway as I seem to remember large numbers of cows being driven down fox hill road and driven int railway trucks. Don’t understand the item about moss and gamble brick co. Moss and gamble was a forge at the bottom of fox hill road I worked there for about five year. (It had the largest steam hammer in the country 10 tons and during the war years the hammer could only work daytime because of the noise and vibration so I was told )
  3. Howard Wragg lived near the top of Bullen road ,very quiet lad. Did not seem to join in with the other boys. Used to live at the side of a couple named Hurst who didn't have any kids.
  4. You have got to be my old mate John who along witH Ronnie Whomersly and Billie Dawes lived on Bullen road and virtually grew up together.
  5. Hi Rockers rule. Alan Godfry has come up trumps with the street map. Thanks for. the info.
  6. Yes Pauline was Ronnies sister . Ronnie was my best man but sadly died in his early thirties. Don't know whether I am losing it but none of the names ring any bells. Ronnie went to the central Tech and then went roll grinding somewhere down the east end. Billy Dawes who lived next to Ronnie was an. Hgv driver. Happy days.
  7. I do remember going on one trip to Lowestoft to a camp but if I remember well most of us were in bed with Asian flu almost all the hol.
  8. The pictures of the two pubs are brilliant . Where would I find pictures like these , of old Sheffield , from books or the library.
  9. Thanks Rockers rule. I can remember thE Pomona pub as your picture this would have been in the early fifties. Also a walk below the General Cemetary at the side of the river Porter called Frog Walk. Cheers
  10. Jim hardie and rockers ruled. As you can tell not very good on computers so if anybody can point Me in the direction of a good cleaR street map that would be brilliant. A lot of my famiLy going back possibly 100 years lived on Angus square also Pomona street and round the General Cemetary. Also does any body know the name of the pub on the corner of soho and Summerfield street opposite st Mathias church! My great grandad used to spend hours in there. He used to call it Joe Ryalls but that was possibly the landlords name. The map I am aftEr I think is SK3486. Regards
  11. Hi DP59 and Jgill506. I now live in Matlock. Mr Apply is the teacher at Foxhill who I could not remember , he took our class in the last year. Mr Fairhurst as I have mentioned earlier should never have been near kids , he once caned me that hard I had to be excused lessons for the rest of the day because I could not write. I remember we had a black girl in our class who lived on Keats road , really nice shy girl , can't imagine where she went after Foxhill as she did not come to Meynell. Fleming took the A stream in the third year and I was in the B stream in the clAssroom opposite. Even though I ran in the cross country team I can't remember who organised it I recall the name Mr Bunting but can't place him. Did any of you go to the youth club at Meynell after you left , used to have some good times trying to jive, (two left feet ) That's all for now . Enjoying these chats . Bye
  12. I feel awful saying this but what is your name? We do seem to have been close friends , I can remember going on lots of cycle rides after delivering papers at the weekend. I used to deliver papers from the newsagents on Wolf road. This is incredible we are talking about sixty odd years ago. Where are you living now, I am out in Derbyshire.Ronnie was my best man but he died when he was about thirty from cancer , he was married with two children. John joined the RAF and stayed in until he was around forty , I have lost touch with him. Billy was driving an Hgv about twenty five years ago, possibly retired now. Lots of memories coming back now. Hope you are well.
  13. Don't remember that Name but your memory is far better than mine. Is Foxhill school still running ?. Meynell closed about five years after I left and everyone went to Chaucer , What happened to the Meynell senIor school buildings. Just going back to Foxhill , I started in the nursery when I was possibly three and remember being made to have an hours sleep in the afternoon on camp beds. Don't let this get round but I remember being in the infants at the end of the day saying prayers before going home, and being afraid to ask to go to the toilet and weeing myself .
  14. Thanks everybody , fantastic response from everyone.
  15. Jim , where did you find this road map.?
