  1. I thought the bottom part (near Beauchief hotel) was known as Abbey Lane, coming down from Ecclesall Road South.
  2. Abbey Lane - the part that joins with Whirlowdale Road leading to/from Abbeydale Road (not the bit that leads to Hutcliffe Wood). It's like off roading!
  3. I caught a Stagecoach a few weeks ago and the driver didn't have 20p to give me so issued a 20p credit voucher instead - I could exchange it for 20p on my next journey or use it towards a fare. Surprised First don't do this - all he had to do was issue a ticket! It took seconds. I did complain to First back in January on the website and thought I wasn't going to hear anything but a few weeks later they did reply. Very random. However yes they should acknowledge much sooner, and this is much more serious than my complaint so should be actioned much quicker!
  4. I left school 15 years ago when it was a 40p fare and we had limited income at home. Buses weren't great then neither, but it was doable. That's my point - it's doable.
  5. I used to have to catch two buses as my school was out of the catchment area (through choice). I stayed behind most nights to do sports clubs, and often arrived early to go to the library.
  6. I left school in 2000 and before then we had a 30 min lunch break. Start school 8.30am Morning break apx 10.30 for 15min 30 min lunch break (tiered for different year groups) Finish 2.40pm Plenty of after school clubs available for sport/revision. Chance to speak to teachers after lessons/break.
  7. Home to town would normally be £8-10 with City, Uber quoting £9.12. Not much difference at all (except I've got a £20 free ride just for registering with them)!
  8. Bradway Community Hall (S17 admittedly but not far off) Greenhill Scout hut Transport club Lowedges tenants hall
  9. In one of the chains I worked for, one of the optometrists had worked in that same store for over 20 years. Specsavers, as an example, are owned by joint venture partners who work in the store. So you may have your eyes tested by the store director. Just like you do by Martin Johnson.
  10. It's great to hear a positive story like that! Moments when people realise optometrists are medical professionals, not sales people. I do work in the industry, and have for a lot of years. I will point out that I don't work in a branch (not anymore anyway). I've been employed across the board and been a customer of several so like to think that I give an independent view. NB I'm not an optometrist. I quite enjoy a coffee from a local coffee shop, but I also thoroughly enjoy coffees at Starbucks and Costa Coffee. The coffee always tastes good and the service is just as good. I see this as the same and is my general view of many industries. Don't get me wrong, I've seen some horror stories! However as I pointed out before, if anywhere was as bad as people point out, the regulatory body would step in. If they're providing an NHS service, the NHS can also step in.
  11. Not offended at all Although I've seen many posts on this forum before around the same subject, and many have said that one optician is better than the other because of where they work. It's a bit like saying that one GP is better than another just because they're based in particular surgery. Makes it even more interesting when you bring locums into the equation - they could work in six different opticians in one week if they wanted to! Everyone will have their own individual opinion, just like we do at supermarkets, restaurants, hairdressers, dentists etc. It's a personal experience. If any of them were as bad as people sometimes make them out to be, don't you think they'd be closed down by their governing body?
  12. I've just looked at the website - an opticians based in a NHS hospital, yet they can't provide an NHS funded eye test to those who are entitled to it. Instead they try to justify why you should pay for it, saying that other opticians need to find the funding elsewhere and this can reduce the quality of the test! Biggest load of garbage I've ever read.
  13. What makes it a 'proper opticians'? I wonder what extra training they have, as all optometrists do the same study at university before finding employment in an opticians, so they have all the same qualifications wherever they choose to work.
  14. Hi everyone , Has anyone received a leaflet through their door, or a knock on the door, asking if they'd like an eye test in their own home? They're called i-care or something like that (apt isn't it?!). The leaflet is a dark blue border. I think the phone number may have been 01207 or 01702 but I threw the leaflet away, stupidly. If anyone has one, or knows which one I'm on about, I'd really appreciate some extra information to contact them. NB - I don't need the services of a home-visit optician, but I do wish to speak to this company directly. Many thanks
  15. Hello, a very old thread so thought I'd ask if there was any new information - I'm looking for a late collection time in Sheffield tomorrow (I'm working away, won't be home until tomorrow evening and hoping to get something posted out ASAP) - Brightside Lane possibly? I'm sure they used to do a 10pm collection. Thanks
  16. Yes - it's the "Doubletree by Hilton'. On Chesterfield Road South, by Meadowhead school.
  17. I have never seen so many police cars! There must be five or six at the front and five or six behind! They're all the same type of car too - not the 'panda' that you normally see locally. Something tells me this is not a 'generic' accident! Genuinely never seen so many police cars. Southbound is closed from Meadowhead roundabout with police keeping traffic moving on the roundabout by stopping/starting the roundabout traffic. You can't turn from the roundabout down past the hotel. North from Dronfield to Meadowhead is absolutely fine.
  18. I agree. I used to find getting to Rochdale via the M62 could easily take three hours. It was horrendous. I much prefer the snake but always allow a good couple of hours. If you needed to be there for 10 I'd be leaving at 7.30. Better to be too early than too late.
  19. I saw this message on the Chesterfield Road South sign on Friday night. I'm provided with a diesel company car as I travel across the country for work. Diesel is way more efficient than petrol, if we all switch to petrol they'll be moaning about fuel consumption next!
  20. Being refurbished with an onsite food takeaway - rumoured to be Subway (like Meadowhead now has).
  21. Again, that's down to the optometrist. A newer optometrist could take up to 45mins, sometimes longer. A longer serving optometrist may be able to complete a 'straight forward' exam in 15mins. That doesn't mean there's anything being missed or not completed correctly, it just sometimes doesn't take long. 20mins is about average, anything above that is a bonus (I'd be worried if it was less than 15mins, or less than 20-25 if you had raised a concern or had a more complex issue that required further investigation). Again, like a dentist/GP/physio, there are set appointment periods & if it takes longer then it takes longer!
  22. The world of optical lenses is never ending! It is a minefield of choice & complexity. Of course some professionals are better than others, but this shouldn't be recommended by the name over their head. Many optometrists work as locums - so could potentially work in five different stores over a week. My point is, that when someone asks to recommend an optician to monitor an eye condition, the optometrist is an individual person. "My specs weren't right at specsavers' or 'lots of choice at Asda" does not measure the capability of the optometrist. It's a bit like asking for a GP to be recommended, but saying the local surgery is rubbish as you don't like the receptionist - does that make the GP rubbish?
