  1. Evening all, 173 Main Road Darnall.. I wonder if this was pulled down post Victorian times and the Betfred building put up? Does anyone have or know of any photos showing this area in Victorian times? My GGgrandfather, Willian Henry Waterton (died at just 33 years of age) was a chemist and from his death certificate, resided (or owned a pharmacy) at 173 Main Road. Thanks!
  2. Thanks all... I'll pass the info on 🙂
  3. Yes but, um... how do I insert photos... ?!
  4. Evening.. Just bought two very heavy oak shelves which have come with heavy duty black steel brackets - 2 for each shelf. Shelves are about 10kg each. Once up, they won't be holding anything heavy, just lightweight objects. Will be drilling into an end Victoria brick wall (as opposed to dividing wall). Can I ask, what length and size screws are needed for this job and what and type of raw plugs - plastic (what colour) or metal? Shelves are going above the tv so although I have concerns about shelves falling on to the tv, I'm more concerned about the wall falling away with the shelves!! Thank you!!
  5. Morning... Looking for someone to lay/fit vinyl in our bathroom, and then a couple of of other flooring jobs (laying vinyl/laminate in our dining room and lounge) early next year, hopefully. Someone who can pop around to look at the current flooring and advise if any prep works are needed first. Any recommendations please? Thank you.
  6. Afternoon! Recommendations please for builder (small re-render job) and handyman (several jobs ie outhouse roof, porch roof), and joiner (few jobs, hanging internal doors, kitchen fitting) for house in Rawmarsh? Many thanks!
  7. Afternoon, Very small outdated kitchen, most of the cupboards I can't reach or are at awkward angles, and definitely not enough. So looking to have a new kitchen fitted. Can anyone advise steps we need to take, having never had to have a kitchen fitted before, from start to finish. We will keep the existing oven and gas hob and don't want to go to the expense of moving any electrical points. We could do with having someone come and look at the kitchen and give us some options. We have a small budget so advice on how we can save ££s too. Many thanks
  8. Hi there, Looking to get the extensive damp sorted out on ground floor of our Victorian end terrace - mainly caused due to poor ventilation and condensation. Could anyone please recommend some builders able to carry out the internal and external works - plastering, lowering ground level at front and installing additional air bricks. Thanks! Edited: Just to say I have read Heritage House website extensively and am not convinced either about 'rising damp'. If anyone has any suggestions about existing damp on walls and how we can dry this out without hacking off plaster.. then I would be extremely grateful for the advice! Sorry, would have used the megathread but wanted to bump this in front of that in the hope of getting some responses.
  9. Afternoon.. Just had a quote for some work to our bathroom - company requested more than half the total cost as 'deposit for materials'. I might be being a bit cautious here but asking for so much upfront is a bit of a red flag to me. Yes, we've asked them to source and supply the materials however not sure if it's usual practice to request so much upfront. Advice gratefully received! Thanks.
  10. Hi Jodie, Did you get damp fixed? If yes, mind me asking who you had? We're looking for quotes and looks like we may have had the same surveyor 🙂 Thanks,
  11. Evening all, Looking for recommendations please for a good GP surgery in Rawmarsh and also recommended local removals companies for moving us from Tinsley to Rawmarsh. (Had a really bad experience from one company on Checkatrade (so bad they didn't bother turning up on day of moving, telling us they couldn't get diesel for their van - and ran off with our money!!) So if anyone has moved recently in and around the area and can recommend their removals company, I'll be grateful for their details. Many thanks in advance!
  12. Any recommendations for good local financial advisors please for personal matters? Thanks!
  13. Hi Caroline, Did you find someone - would also be interested for the same job. Thanks,
  14. Hi there, Any recommendations please for BUILDERS to install a fire party between between our end terrace and neighbour's loft? Looking for advice about cost and time to complete. Also, any guidance on paperwork required before any work takes place. Thanks!
  15. Thanks Sedith.. point taken into consideration 🙂
  16. Sadly not in our price range or if it is, we keep being outbid by the other buyers! We don't have £10-15k spare to put on top of a 'guide' price.
  17. Hello... Hope someone can help! We've just had a structural survey completed and we know the property has (probably rising) damp, visible in the dining room, and confirmed on the report. What do we do next? Having just paid out for the structural survey, should we now arrange a separate a Damp Surveyor company to investigate the cause, and solutions, or is that going to be another company? Thanks!
  18. Hi everyone, Thoughts about Shiregreen please? Mason Lathe Road? I've seen some not so good comments on other sites about Shiregreen - quite a bit of crime around there I think? Is it a big housing estate? Sincerely, no disrepect to anyone that lives in Shiregreen.. Thank you!
  19. Thanks again all.. we looked at a house in High Green yesterday, put in an offer.. do hope it's accepted but with the viewings booked til the weekend, not feeling too hopeful at this stage but if it's not meant to be... and all that. Will keep looking just in case.
  20. We have been looking on Right Move.. probably we, I, am being a little choosy as I'm looking for somewhere with a maturish back garden as I'm a veggie grower and keen bird watcher. The other thing we are keeping in the back of our mind are 2 receptions as one day my elderly father may need to live with us. I think if we can have a better idea of the areas then at least we can start to know where to look and take it from there.
  21. Thanks for responses so far.. we really do have to bear in mind our max budget, sadly. We're first time buyers at our ripe old age, hehe.. and will be taking a small mortgage over a very short period so we can't afford much more, unfortunately. I think Hillsborough is a little expensive Mister M? Much appreciated and look forward to more helpful responses.. 😁 they're really very useful as we only know our local area so far.
  22. Afternoon all! So we've now been in Sheffield for a couple of weeks and so far enjoying it and all's good. Looking to start viewing houses but unsure which areas to consider, and which to avoid and would really appreciate some help. We're a quiet, middle-aged working couple, no kids, with a very modest budget of £140k max. Would prefer small areas of housing rather than large estates. As hubby works in S4, he's happy to travel 10 miles (30 mins) to work so ideally, 10 miles south or west of S4. We dont' mind going a little east to Rotherham but that's about as far as, currently renting in S9, we like being close to the M1 for getting up north and to the Peak District. Any recommendations of suitable/affordable areas would be really helpful. Many thanks!
  23. Thanks everyone - some great advice here which I'll explore once up there.
