  1. Does anyone have any info/memories/pictures of no.s 108 and 110 Lansdowne road? In the early 1900's no. 110 was a beerhouse run by my 2xgreat grandmother Sarah Padget. She died in 1914 and it was taken over by her son in law (my great grandfather) William Bullock. Also next door at 108 lived Sarah's son John Robert Hunt and his wife Aminda ( also known as Belinda or Linda) They where still living there in 1939 while the Bullocks had moved to Club Garden Road. If anyone knows anything we would be very greatful for more information. Thank you
  2. Ada Bennet was the landlady of Rising Sun, Abbey Lane. I worked there as a barmaid in 71/72. Remember others- Cynthia Green, Andrew Staniland my cousin. Ada always wore a silk 'corsage' pinned to her dress and had a pug dog named Benji. She served lunches in the cocktail bar during the week. Although a free house, Mansfield Bitter was the beer on tap costing 6s 8d per pint. The till was just like Arkwrights' with no calculator and a very fast spring return. We were not allowed to accept money tips but could charge the customer for a drink.
  3. Remember Ian Saynor played cricket for Norton Oaks Cricket Club early seventies. His father was manager at Co-op Eckington Road, Coal Aston.
  4. I remember Gowers on Abbey Lane in the early sixties. A small shop which had its own particular smell. like a mixture of sugar, tea, biscuits and cheese. Behind the counter a step ladder fixed to a runner enabling staff to reach right up to the highest shelves. Everything was weighed and sold loose. Further along was another grocers named Woods. This was posh and rather smart. An assistant would open the door for you. They delivered, but it was pricey compared to Gowers. A few years later a Gallons shop opened on Chesterfield Road (Woodseats bottom).
