  1. Happy to see the total number of humans plummet, alright cheers.
  2. Have a look at Italy's birth rate. Although there's rarely one cause for anything, Italy's almost non-existent welfare state is often cited as a major factor in the very low birth rate - people can't afford to have kids because capitalism. Personally I don't care if there aren't any more Italians any more than I care whether there are any more British people, but the availablity of affordable childcare, which the market is incapable of providing, is clearly a factor that deters people from having kids. Which can obviously be seen as a good thing in the long term.
  3. Apparently, Bone threatened to run as an independent and split the vote if they didn't pick his girlfriend as the Tory candidate. They really don't give a toss about the electorate do they?
  4. It was on the BBC S Yorks page until about half an hour ago.
  5. As with all these outsourcing companies, there are only a few that actually have the capacity to bid for the contracts, and they just take turns to rotate between them. There's no real competition and no incentive to do a proper job because as one door closes, another opens. It's corporatocracy, as mentioned in another thread - government has become just a means of passing tax payer money to corporations, regardless of what we get in return.
  6. Tories not able to deliver key pledge on free childcare whilst giving money away in national insurance cut. Even basic mathematics seems to be beyond them.
  7. You've genuinely never heard of section 106 money?
  8. Greenland Drive is indeed a tough place to live, I wouldn't be keen. Also, many, many escape routes - the kind of design that you don't get in newer developments for good reason.
  9. The 'character' of Waingate and Haymarket lol
  10. Maybe we could replace all the residential units with cash-only shops for the under-30s
  11. Also, what is the total journey time to London for someone living in or near Woodhouse at the moment? A lot longer than 2 hours and 5 minutes I bet.
  12. No. But we are in danger of forgetting that grooming gangs are not the only or main cause of child sexual abuse in the UK, as many child protection professionals have said. That's not to diminish the seriousness of the specific type of grooming seen in Rotherham, Rochdale and elsewhere - these were the most serious safeguarding failures in England's recent history, with lifelong consequences for many of the victims/survivors and huge lessons for various statutory services. They're just not the only way that children are abused.
  13. And another one https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cxe4p3lx4d0o
  14. It's also student accommodation, suprise surprise. I don't know if there is a way for councils to refuse planning permission for shared student accommodation unless it can be easily converted to general needs housing once the student housing bubble bursts, as it will - I hope there is.
  15. I thought City Lofts went bust but SCC had insisted on the project being underwritten so that it would get finished in that eventuality. Which it did, minus the copper - it's a favourite trick of property developers, so I was pleased when Greenwich Council refused to play ball The system generally seems rigged in favour of developers, so it's good to see someone taking a stand.
  16. Was closed for months because of vandalism but it's now open again, although the scaffolding on the block of flats closer to Blonk Bridge is still blocking the route there. I suppose it's too much to ask that the other closed stretch near Stephenson Road has reopened?
  17. The point should be obvious. Except in rare circumstances where the offending is racially motivated or has a particular racial element (e.g. Rotherham CSE), nothing is learned or added by pointing out the race of the offender. It shouldn't even need saying, but some white people do bad things and some non-white people do bad things. Scouring the national and local news and highlighting only news stories featuring offenders of one race or other and then commenting on their race is idiotic and - obviously - racist. So it would be good if people stopped doing it.
  18. Because there are countries like Thailand and Philippines where it's easier to exploit girls and women. It's exactly the same mechanic as grooming gangs targeting girls in the care system - go for the most vulnerable, where you're least likely to get caught. It's the same for any exploitative crime, regardless of who's doing it, where in the world they're doing it and what their skin colour is.
  19. That's putting quite a gloss on his behaviour there. The ethnicity of victim/survivors isn't usually disclosed, so I've no idea. The ethnicity of the victims/survivors in Rotherham, Rochdale etc. was (quite rightly) disclosed because there's a highly racial element in those offences, so we know about that, but we don't know about other offences. This man, for example. We don't know the ethnicity of the women be raped because that isn't shared.
  20. This reply is weaker than a weak lemon drink
  21. What about domestic abuse, that's solidly part of white British culture isn't it? 6 pints of Stella during the England game and then a battering for the wife. Erm, Gary Glitter?
  22. Yeah I messed up there. I realise now that what one is supposed to do is make some dog whistle comment that says 'brown people eh? What a nightmare they all are' but without actually saying that. But what would be the appropriate dog whistle racism comment for white people? If we can agree on that then I can just trot that out in relation to any report of white crime and that would be... fine?
  23. That still doesn't answer why some people will respond to certain crimes with comments like 'seen the name, not surprised', 'I feel so culturally enriched' or something about City of Sanctuary, and yet equivalent comments are not made about white offenders. Why is that, do you think?
