  2. Anybody out there who was on the first intake for a welding course when Stannington tech first opened , we all started at Newall road for theory and Ponds St for the evening practical. Tutors I remember :- messers Sinton,Flint,Jackson,Harrison,Grant,etc. It was about 45years ago but I have just got back in touch with Paul Scofield and it got me thinking who else is out there. Dave D.

  6. I was a paper boy in the early sixties and delivered to back to backs on Well road,Heeley. The backs were called courts. Eg. 3 court 2. That is house no. 3 in court 2. Or the other way round. There were also some on Little London Rd. near Valley Rd.

  8. Hi Yids100. I think the woodwork teacher was a Mr Kyme who came to fill in when Mr Hawley had to stop teaching due to possibly epilepsy.
  9. does anyone know or remember a family called Townsend. I think the lived on no 4 or 6 arthington St then moved up onto Valley Rd. they had a daughter called Margaret who was in the RAF or ladies equivalent during the war.
  10. Has anyone got any tales to tell about VE Day around Heeley. My mum (died 2004) told me one or two bit about it , please post now before its to late. Also is Rhonda80 still out there she lived near to us and used to post various memory's about the area. Regards D.
  11. Anyone out there who attended stannington college on the welding and fabrication course when the college first opened. I heard it has now closed. I went on to complete weld craft practice and then the technicians. Looking for old pals and colleagues this also includes staff.
  12. Hi again Duffems we must know each other somewhere along the way. Bob Banks was a year older than me and Richard a year younger we all played cricket in the park though. I married in 73 and moved away to Killamarsh. I now live in Hinckley fo the last 35 years. All the best D.
  13. Hi Duffems. Bit late with this post (about eight months). Everyone took prescriptions to larders My mum only had one arm, her left one missing below the elbow. The streets lived below us with Bill Wray. And we're our family's best friends many holidays spent together in Blackpool and Yarmouth. We all knew each other in those days Baileys Bridons Banks And many others.
  14. Hi heeleybird I know I'm a bit late but just read your post from Nov 2011, the animal feed shop was called Scolies (not sure of spelling). And the gift shop was Kenderdines the two ladies were Mrs K and Mrs Butler. Don't forget W Goodrich butchers (I had a Saturday job there) Clarks the grocery shop. And the tobacconist wife who owned and ran the wool shop. I left the area in the early seventies after being born and bread there. Bet I wouldn't know the place now but remember lots of great people. ---------- Post added 02-03-2015 at 20:38 ---------- Don't know how my post got on here I posted it to Heeleybird about shops at the bottom of valley road.   16. Hi manxbiker do you remember Ian (Flitch) Ritchardson doing just that. The whole school ran down in mass to look and he was just looking up with his head in his hands laughing. A true stuntman and yes he ment to do it never had any intention of making the bend.
  17. Newfield school used to hold one every year just befor the summer holiday break. The music teacher jack Pye would stand on the metalwork shop roof and time everyone down from the top yard to a finish line outside the caretakers bungalow. There must have been upto 70 carts involved with all The departments putting a special in. A lad in my year (Jeff Clark won it one year. Great fun.
  18. Hi all another name for the pot John (Jack) Downing. Worked on the trams until there demise and then went on to be a bus conductor as he had no driving licence at that time.
  19. I worked for J R Bramah as a Tig welder for about 3 years from 1973 John Beeby was my manager.
  20. Hi GVOWL yes Derick was a crane driver and yard man he had a thumb missing on one hand from a pit accident in Barnsley. He lived in the flats at the bottom of Valley Rd He smoked Piccadilly cigarets but not a big drinker. A nice guy with always a tail to tell.

  22. Hi westmoors do you remember "Swiggy" he was one of the grinders you mentioned. I served my apprenticeship there on the welding shop from 67 to 73.
  23. That's right. Mick Harison did have a beard. My first lecturer was a chap called Sinton. And a Welsh chap who's name I've forgotten this was at ponds street for practical and newall road for theory. Then Stannington coll of FE opened and we all moved. Keith Jackson was a realy clever maths guy. Toss a few more names about if you can , it may jog my memory. Also lads from your classes. Regards.
