  1. Awww brooksy, you've ruined the conspiracy theory I'd guess it is either what brooksy said, other that you notice it more in the summer because its nicer, lighter for longer and there is suddenly loads of things you'd like to do. It is the same as the Bank Holiday effect - dispite evidence from the Met Office that Bank Holidays are typically slightly warmer and dryer than the weekends surrounding them most people thing the weather is terrible on Bank Holidays. It all comes down to perception and our tendancy to focus on and remmber mostly negative events.
  2. Why not write a story for the Star about all the great work you're doing at Winn Gardens? As far as I know newspaper editors love it when charities write sucess stories for them, ready to print. Remember to include a few challenges you're facing to get people hooked into the story and maybe spured into helping you out. Or come pop down the road a bit and I'll make you a nice cup of tea
  3. Darn, I had a joke lined up and Appolo beat me to it I feel a lot safer than I ever did when visiting Leeds or living in Solihull and Birmingham. I generally feel safer in Sheffield late at night that I do going around Leeds in daylight!
  4. Credit where its due. The people on the PAYE helpline, local office and the Corporation Tax helpline have been brilliant for me. I don't know why Revenue officers have such a bad reputation, I'm sure there are some sad morons, like any large organisation, but I've never met one of them. Fingers crossed I never do
  5. Why not put one on manor top as well? PS: Very cute cat slim
  6. Keep me supplied with bacon butties (smoked middle please) and I'll be your slave for life
  7. You couldn't afford me mate @Taxman: you and your collegues are lovely people - everyone I've ever spoken too has been so friendly and helpful even when I'm being a complete idiot
  8. LOL. Pretty much Will have to work that into my bio somehow, tis a good phrase!
  9. I'm a company Director, website developer & architect, information architect, accessibility expert and evangelist (mostly web & IT, but moving into the built environment too), marketing consultant, internet entrepreneur and servant to 2 cats a dog and 2 chickens. I also like beef
  10. Turbines are incredibly beautiful, the few up Stannington way are a great example, and you'll never hear them make any noise. The only way you'd hear a modern wind turbine make noise is if you were standing under one doing full revs while the wind was making no sound at all. Two thumbs up to wind power!
  11. I read in some report just sending out an Ambulance would cost between £300 and £600 pounds if done privately, so we get a very good deal in this country. As someone who has needed ambulances more than a couple of times I'm tremedously grateful for the dedication and skill of the Ambulance Service personel. jen13kd has exactly the right attidue to treat this kind of injury. I know when its your partner, child or parent it is very hard to stay calm and act rationally but this is why trained people answer the 999 service. What happens when they blatently aren't trained is a problem, but that's personal and not on-topic.
  12. In theory nationalising everything or taxing it at a very high rate would work - but that's the only time it works. I am a socialist and a liberal, but I think we have to be honest and practical when we talk about how major industries should run and tax policy. Personally I think we should have a slightly higher personal tax - percentage wise - and corporate taxes should stay where they are. @PatzB: pensions are incredibly complicated, because of the way companies structure them and law both, but it does seem odd that companies (ie Royal Mail) can turn out multi-million pound profits whilst getting a subsidy to cover their pensions liabilities. I'll let the accountants explain why that makes sense!
  13. Profit is everything left after capital costs (stock, equipment), salaries, consumables, loans interest and corporate and other taxes are paid. Companies need to generate a profit to invest in new materials (planes aren't cheap) and it is very, very hard to calculate a price point that will get you profit and not give serious risk of a loss. I agree, though, that many corporate profits (banks, oil companies and Tesco's) are utterly ludicrus. Interesting point that Skyo, didn't know that, does explain a lot
