  1. Back in the early sixties our neighbours lost their five year old daughter, she died in the house. When these neighbours finally moved to another area some years later, we had new neighbours. We were soon on friendly terms and one morning they called in to tell us that during the night, one of them had seen a little girl stood at the foot of the bed. When they described the child to us there was no doubt in our minds that it was the child of our former neighbours. We had never spoken to them about our former neighbours and our new friends had no knowledge of what happened in the house before they moved in. The place was exorcised and the child was never seen again.
  2. Lindy Chamberlain was also accused of being cold and callous because she didn't show emotion. She was found guilty of murdering her own child and spent many years in a Northern Territory prison before finally being proved innocent and released. She not only lost her baby but was estranged from her other children, lost her reputation, and her marriage. Trial by media is very dangerous, so, shouldn't we be watchful of our judgements.
  3. Better watch what you're saying Applegrim, remember I'LL be there soon !!
  4. You are correct.... they did change to tubes and I agree, they didn't taste the same. Getting the tin was important, it was like getting something useful for free. I remember begging free Oxo tins from the co-op. You felt you really had something worthwhile if you had one of those red boxes to put your "stuff" in ...... my how times have changed !
  5. Yea, with seasoned puddings.. yummy !! When I was flush, which wasn't very often, I would buy a tin Horlicks tablets from the drink shop. I haven't seen them in donkeys years
  6. My son is in Sydney but it's better for him down there. Extremes of heat and cold seems to badly affect people with neurological diseases. I didn't live in Woodhouse but some of my husbands family did. The Gray family at Goathland Place they were in the area throughout the sixties.
  7. Yea Trekker,it is important to have support and I truly hope that you do. When my son had to give up his job it was a very difficult time for him. Eventually he started to take an interest in Bonsai growing and now has a nursery of about 200 plants. Sometimes he cannot tend them as well as he would like but he loves his"babies" and it certainly gives him something positive to focus his energy on when he is feeling well enough. His new hobby helps him feel he can still do and create something worthwhile.
  8. My son who is now 36 was diagnosed with M.S in 1997. Since he had to give up work three years ago I have noticed that he, like yourself has started to reflect on his childhood days back in Sheffield. Also like yourself, he tries to keep a positive attitude, though from time to time it is difficult. I am very proud of the way he deals with the disease and I thank god he has a loving and supportive wife. The only people who can truly understand what it's like for him is someone like yourself.
  9. I don't think it's riduculous or spooky. I have memories of somehow managing to climb up the rails of my cot, teetering on the edge then falling onto my Mum and dads bed which was directly at the side of the cot. I have no other really early memories.
  10. Pity you cannot do the swap but good luck with your immmigration plans lizzmobile. Any friend of Deepak's is a friend of mine !!
  11. Hi lizzmobile ! Not sure if you are saying you might be interested in talking about a house swap? Maybe you can be a little more specific. A PM is a private message Thanks... Banksia
  12. Your house sounds great, just what we were looking for. Problem though..... PM waiting for you. Thank you !
  13. I have a post in "living and moving to Sheffield" regarding a house swap between Sheffield and Queensland Australia for Christmas. If anyone is interested please have a look. If I'm not supposed to do this I'm sure I will be told ! Just want as many people to see my post as possible as this is urgent.
  14. My family all live in Sheffield and I have been living in Australia for the past 23 years. My husband and I want to come to Sheffield for a 5 week Christmas break and are interested in doing a house swap. Ideally we would like south or south west areas of Sheffield, something suburban with 3/4 bedrooms. Is there anyone out there who would be interested in coming to Queensland to sample Australian life ? We live in a gorgeous modern Australian Colonial style house with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and all modern conveniences. Of course there are many more details with photographs and countless matters to discuss, this is just the start. I look forward to hearing from any geniunely interested person. Thanks Banksia
  15. Sorry but am I missing something here Applegrim? What's the problem ?
  16. Dr Ross-Smith was actually the senior partner that set up Gleadless Medical Cetre. He and Dr Blindt delivered my second child at home in Gleadless Road. Dr Ross-Smith's surgery prior to that was opposite the co-op on Gleadless Road.
  17. It's a bit scary for me to learn you have a history group for an area which a watched being built. I didn't realise I was THAT old, I must be in denial !! I'm afraid the only pictures I have are all in my head but good luck with your venture, I hope it's as successful as The Heeley History Group.
  18. Mary Mitchell was in my class all the way through school at Anns Road. Anyone know her whereabouts these day ?
  19. Well I knew all those people you mention so who are you ? I'm Pat Johnson and I too remember the lucky lollies. I also recall Sylvia Croft, Sylvia Russell, Maureen Walmsley, Ann Mettam, George Hewitt, Tony Jepson, Tony Robertson, Keith Hopkinson and Roger Abrahams. I saw John Pashley and Valerie Dunn when I was over there and visited Heeley last year. After all this time I would still have picked them out easily, even away from Heeley. I believe both Susan Marshall and Maureen Walmsley passed on quite young, very sad !
  20. And does your current partner know they are only running a close second ? I would hate to think my husband found me"good enough". I'm certainly not perfect but I also know in my husbands eyes I'm the best partner in the world to him.
  21. Taggy's van stood at the end of Carfield Street on Sundays and sometimes, as a treat, mum would buy us a cone. I adored the raspberry sauce and always asked for a good dollop. I can still remember the taste of it... absolutely Yummy ! Someone told me that Mr Battle.. the owner of Taggy's, took the recipe to his grave. If it's true.. what a waste !
  22. Dare I say it ? Who are the Redsox ? Remembering I'm not a typical Aussie. Sorry but you can keep the blizzards, suffered enough of the cold in England. I prefer the air conditioner on our hot days. But - as they say, it wouldn't do for us all to be the same would it ?
  23. So you mean you didn't have the navy blue school knickers in your day Hazel ? What a treat you missed !
  24. My you were "posh", you had a pantry. We had a stone slab in the cellar where Mum kept food. When the coalman was due we had to make sure to remember to cover the food up well otherwise "nutty slack" would be all over it.
