  1. Yea, got caned a few times by Mr Vickers for not being able to learn my Geography.. good teacher eh ? We girls got the wooden spoon across our knuckles for being late or any other little misdemeanour that irritated the teachers. Wouldn't say it did me any good at all.
  2. Nah ! Taggy's was the best ice cream ever and the rasberry sauce he put on to,p Yum Yum !!
  3. Thanks diablo, maybe you know someone who may be interested ?
  4. My husband and I are planning a two month trip to Sheffield in 2011 and are looking for a house swap in Sheffield or surrounding areas. We live in Gladstone Queensland Australia in a 5 bedroomed 3 bathroom home with veranda to the front and entertainment deck with bar to the rear. We also have a one bedroomed apartment at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast which we can offer for a short stay. Please PM if you are interested and I will supply photos. This is a serious offer so only genuine reponses please.
  5. We had a guy called Mr Clubbly call for his money every Saturday morning. I'm proud to say that as poor as we were, my Mum always paid her debts so we never had to pretend we weren't home. Mr Clubbly would have a little package of six smarties, wrapped in greasproof paper for all of us kids. So, we looked forward to our little treat each Saturday so watched out for him arriving.
  6. I think they are great, my husband looks sexy in his. And - a cowboy hat is good protection from the sun. But there again, I live in Australia
  7. Dirty, shabby shoes... a real turn off
  8. Hi Davided Banksia here. I'm back home now but have been in contact with some of the school chums and they are talking about another get together nearer to Christmas. I of course will not be there this time but I will keep you informed of developments.
  9. I was born and raised in Sheffield and emmigrated in 1981. Since then I have been back several times, more recently in 2003 and 2005, both times doing a house swap. Doing this really does give the illusion of living back there and it's great. I love my vists "home" and enjoy all the things I cannot get here in Oz. But, having said that, I know that I could not move back to England and be able to afford the kind of lifestyle that I have in Oz. It would be a retrograde step and not a risk I'm willing to take after all the hard work and at this stage in my life.
  10. Where on the grove did you live, we may know each other. We lived in the corner house next door to Vera and Harry Lonslow
  11. Like yourself, I started work at the co-op in 1959 when we had to use our brain power. I'm sure you remember not only the sacks of sugar which we had to weigh but also the oatmeal, sago and sultanas even baking soda sometimes. Of course lard came in big blocks as well as the hundredweight casks of butter which all had to be weighed, sometimes into 2 ounces pieces for the old age pensioners. The old people were treated with respect and were walked home by the young workers if the need was there. We made our own bags from greasproof paper to weigh an ounce of tobacco or yeast. Last but certainly not least, there were the cash carrierers that zoomed around above our heads all day long, sometimes containing unmentionables as a joke.
  12. Perish the thought, poor Pete, he used to be quite presentable but of course that is 25 plus years ago.
  13. I am surprised. Usually if someone puts a post in here referring to God or religion there are numerous people who have to have their two penny worth. Yet having someone front up on the doorstep is a problem ?? I love a good old debate with the JW's, it's fun.
  14. No didn't know him. We were married with a family in those days so our circle was quite tight. Knew the Tattersalls, Briddons, Greens, Bilson's and Deakin's amongst others. My friend worked at the chippy for years. My son however would probably know more people having been to Rowlinson school.
  15. I assume you are asking me where I lived alex ? I lived on Selly Oak Grove. No I didn't know that Marti Caine lived on Ormond or about her husband having the butchers shop. I did know she played the clubs a lot around Sheffield before she hit the "big time".
  16. I lived at Jordanthorpe from 1974 to 1981. We then emigrated to Queensland OZ but I go back quite regularly and always visit my old friends and neighbours who still live at Jordanthorpe. We enjoyed living there as we were on the edge of lovely Derbyshire and had plenty of open fields for the kids to play in. There is a little more housing these days but it hasn't changed that much in 26 years. Apart from the high rise having gone the main thing I have noticed and don't like is how run down the local shops look and the pub doesn't have a very good reputation anymore. Shame that, I used to meet my girlfrinds in there every week and felt quite safe calling at the chippy and walking home alone. Not sure I would do that now but that is the way the whole world is going so it's not just Jordanthorpe.
  17. I conned the bloke at our local chip shop into making me a Sheffield Fishcake. It's the same over here, fishcakes are rissoles and I guess he was sick of hearing me go on about how great the Sheffield ones were. He didn't do a bad job either and I really really enjoyed it. Unfortunately he wouldn't make it again as he said it wasn't worth the effort. As for the Henderson's, if I'm getting low I get the reli's to bring me some over when they come on holiday.
  18. Weather gorgeous, best time of year, I love the winter. My son is in Seven Hills Sydney, a long way from where we live in Queensland. I'm from Sheffield so I know all about getting nostalgic when you think of home. I still do and I have been in Oz for 26 years. Wouldn't leave here now though.
  19. My husband and I are planning a visit to Sheffield in 2011 for approximately two months. Is there anyone who would be interested in doing a house swap with us for that period ? We have a 5 bed/3 bath modern Colonial style home with veranda to the front and large entertainment deck with bar at the rear. We can also offer a short stay in our one bedroomed appartment at Surfers Paradise. Please PM me with your details if you are interested, photo's available then. Only genuine enquiries please !
  20. My son, who has a science degree, advised me that margarine is just a chemical cocktail and in it's natural state is actually black. It is given colour to make is look palatable. So - no marg for me, I'll stick to my yummy Lurpak and try to use it sparingly, not always successful though.
  21. I agree... my beliefs mirror yours except I'm not a Christian nor follow any other organised religion
  22. I exchanged houses with a family called Jubb back in 1974. They moved from Jordanthorpe onto Gleadless Valley, Overend Way to be precise. I dare say they will have moved on by now though.
  23. I just had a browse and found a name that rings a bell for me. Was it Tuckwoods you were thinking of ?
  24. Yea.. I remember my gran taking me there when I was a kid. Somewhere recently.. I'm sure in S/F... someone jogged my memory of the name but I cannot for the life of me remember now. If it comes back to me I'll sure let you know.
  25. How long until it reopens ? We are over there in June and I would love to call into my old local and see what it's like.
