  1. The months you quote are the hottest of the year. If you don't mind the heat go for it. Oz is a wonderful country I recommend it
  2. We have a complete marble effect fireplace, grey and black, if you are interested ? PM me if you are and we'll discuss further
  3. I have two sister's in law who are life members LOL ! Better to have a change of lifestyle than diet. Diet's rarely work long term because they are hard to maintain.
  4. Yes, margarine, though I don't think it's called that now, I think it's spread, is not even yellow. It is made that colour to make it more attractive. Who would eat it if it were black or white ?
  5. I do actually ! Don't know you're born these days ! Mind you, having a bath in the middle of winter in front of a blazing fire is hard to beat. ---------- Post added 07-01-2013 at 21:24 ---------- Yep and the pram ! Not quite ALL the groceries though.
  6. I guess I'm one of those oldies who remember vividly getting on a bus with two children and my shopping and it did me no harm. Why do parents these days need special treatment if able bodied. Certain sections of our community are pandered to far too much these days. I would prefer to see more disabled parks instead. It is rare that we can get into a disabled bay when out shopping.
  7. My sister Rita Johnson was at Newfield about the same time as you. I wonder if you remember her and her friends Cathline and Ann Adams ?
  8. Why would anyone WANT to remember and discuss the murder of a stranger all those years ago. I'm curious ?
  9. Yes, my mother and Aunt both worked there, nearly killed my mother the work was so hard. It would have been around 1953 when they were there. My Mum's name was Vera Johnson and my Aunt's Pauline Sherwin. No idea when it closed though. I'm sure the info would be available on google.
  10. We parked in one of those stupid parents with kids or whatever they call it bays, when we could find no spaces in the disabled section. The abuse we received from a bloke in a car with a youngster in the back was appalling. His child could have walked further than my 99 year old mother, but he was so aggressive my husband did move our car then had to go fetch it when we came out. The world is going mad !! Wish I had known that we couldn't be fined.
  11. Good on ya for learning to swim. I learned when I was 53 and have never looked back. It's my main way of keeping fit now, do a kilometer and a half twice a week and love it. If I can do it anyone can. Hope you have as much fun as I have had since I learned
  12. There is a school next to the fitness centre we attend. The school yard is a fine example of the couldn't care less attitude people seem to adopt these days. We watched a man, caretaker I assume, walk around the school yard picking up litter and putting it in a bag. When we came out of the fitness centre just over an hour later there was chip paper blowing all over school yard. In my day we would have been made to go and clean our mess up but these days kids are not expected to follow any rules. If that is how they live at home I dread to think what it is like. In Australia, where I lived for thirty years, we had a yearly event called Clean Up Australia Day where volunteers went out to pick up litter and debris of all kinds. If anyone wants to start a campaign like that we would be happy to volunteer. Someone has to take responsibility, and if we all did just a little, what a difference it could make to our environment. When we go walking we often take a bag and pick up litter on our way.
  13. Don't blame "god" for man's atrocities. We do have free will
  14. You sure can still get those yummy fish cakes, had a few when we were over there last Christmas !! I am coming back to live in Sheffield in a few months time after nearly 30 years in Oz. "Sheffield fish cakes" is just one of the incentives for me to return. My Auusie born husband is a huge fan of them as well.
  15. I'm so proud I am moving back to live there after being in Australia for nearly 30 years
  16. There are plenty of negative opinions about the royal wedding but not one person has decided to knock back the day off work they have been given. Speaks for itself
  17. I don't have any old photos of the area around Heeley Green but have a couple which I took on a visit in 1994 if that is any good. PM me if you want them.
  18. You are the biggest influence in your daughter's life, so , what do you want to teach her about relationships, that they are a struggle and painful ? I'm sure you don't want to do that, so set your own standards of what you require and need for yourself and your daughter, what you will accept and what you will not. Treat yourself with the respect that you deserve and don't get from him.
  19. Thanks to all for your input. I have been in touch with age concern, the agency my Mum is currently with, and they assure me that things will improve for Mum. But, should that not happen, I now know where else to turn. Once again thanks and please, continue to give me leads.
  20. My 97 year old mother is no longer able to get out on her own. As she has always been very active and independent, being housebound is causing her a lot of anxiety. Is there anywhere is Sheffield where we could find a companion for Mum, someone to take her out shopping and on outings etc ? I am in Australia but will be over there in November. It would be good to get something organised for her whilst I'm there. So, any feedback will be welcome, I have to start somewhere.
  21. thanks all for showing an interest. I have made a note so that I can call upon you in the future should the need arise. I agree, this is quite addictive and so fascinating to see how folk lived all those years ago.
  22. Thanks, I did get a reply from local studies library. The shop was on what is now Barkers pool, 100 being on the corner of Pool Square. I found a photo of it in pictures Sheffield as well. I appreciate your offer and if the history of Sheffield is one of your interests, there may be other questions I need answering as I explore my family tree. If that is ok ?
  23. In the process of doing my family tree I have found an entry in the 1881census which says that my family resided at 100 Fargate. But, on close inspection it looks more likely that they, along with 50 or so other people worked at this address. I have Googled the address but have not had a result. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this piece of Sheffield history ?
  24. Taggy was a Heeley bloke that's probably why. Mr Battle they called him actually, took his recipe to the grave with him more the pity.
