  1. Oh good. This again. Let’s all sit and blame the council for everything.
  2. How many times have you seen me Swales give an interview then? Do you know what he looks like? Most do not You need to look at the differences in responsibilities between a local authority and a combined authority. Chalk and cheese
  3. He’s not a councillor and he’s hardly in the public eye, so I’m back down to £300 Irene, less than a quarter! I can’t really blame Me Swales - I blame the people who approved this deal, presumably the mayor Oliver coppard and the Local Authority Leaders of Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. They should be asked to explain
  4. Doesn’t sound enormous rate? I beg to differ - especially in the current cost of living crisis: it’s obscene
  5. Less than that And the local authorities are far, far larger than SYMCA with greater budgets and responsibilities
  6. Article in Private Eye this month (sorry I can’t provide a link) saying that freedom of information requests have revealed the Chief Exec at South Yorkshire Combined Authority is on £1,250 a day and earned over a quarter of a million pounds last year. unacceptable. Whoever approved this should be ashamed. Oliver Coppard I assume?
  7. Local authorities collect business rates not set them
  8. The city centre is a dump. They should do something about it and bring more events and investment into the city centre that gives people a reason to visit. bloody clouncil. Oh no, wait
  9. Bob was the most hardworking, talented, selfless and knowledgeable person I have ever met in my life or think I ever will. He made sheffield his home and worked tirelessly to further the city. He was that very rare phenomenon who - from people that actually knew him that is - you would not hear a bad word said about him. He is, was and will always be held in the highest regard by all those who met him, even for the briefest of times. He was a humble giant of a man and I am very sad at his passing.
  10. I don’t really understand what the Leader of the Council does under a committee system. Leader of each political group I get - overseeing the positions they will all take on their individual committees; but what does the Leader of the Council do? Can he or she actually make any meaningful decisions under a committee system and if not, what’s the point? Anyone know (serious question)?
  11. Labour take one from greens Greens take one from Labour rest stay the same so no change is that right? so in the content of national swing to them that’s a really poor result for Labour in sheffield am I reading it right?
  12. The political parties have a very good idea about the likely results from polling station tellers before the count
  13. Resigned i believe officially at least might suggest they don’t believe the results are going well for Labour
  14. You really don’t understand what this forum is all about do you? Don’t go coming on here with your reasonableness and positivity
  15. Can you say a bit more about it be a councillor’s design please? I’ve not heard that aspect of it thanks
  16. Councils don’t run the buses but other than that, it’s a decent list of issues
  17. You’ve lost me. Electing people is not democratic?
  18. But we elect people to make decisions on our behalf. That IS the system
  19. This isn’t about policing themselves. This is about a system of elections; either “three thirds” (a third up for election each year and then a fallow year) or all out elections every 4 years. They all serve the same length of time, get paid the same etc, it’s just how often there are elections. There are pros and cons to each system
  20. I don’t think this is right. I believe (may be wrong) the council could vote to go to all out elections rather than a third per year. It’s a change of system that I think is for local councils to determine
  21. Agree. Having a third up each year means in reality there are only about 6 months in the year when decisions get made. In the run up to elections elected members generally don’t want to make any decisions at all in case half a dozen people start a petition and run to the Star with a campaign. It’s a crazy system. All out elections would be far better. Give them a fair period of time to do what they said they would and if they don’t deliver, get them out
  22. This is all about avoiding a Local Plan that addresses the green belt boundaries of Sheffield in a radical way. The hoped for alternative is higher density brownfield development on the urban fringe. Take your pick. Trouble is developers want green field sites. Brownfield development and the associated infrastructure costs are likely to mean the development is unviable. The planning inspector will test the Council very hard on deliverability when it comes to the local plan examination. Wanting and hoping a certain pattern of development will occur is not the same as it actually ever delivered by the market. My prediction is Sheffield’s local plan gets thrown out at examination for this single reason. And the only answer then will be significant green belt release. big issue of the next 2 years for sheffield
