  1. My advice is, Get a Bike!! the only problem in Sheffield are the hills, but there are some decent cycle routes which avoid a lot of them..! You can find out about the local cycling Campaign group Pedal Pushers from most bike shops.
  2. Steam engines on this scale are not unusual at all! Have you seen the (Early 20th Century) one at Kelham Island Museum?
  3. Don't have any idea about the exact cost, but if you have any old furniture to get rid of, you might be able to donate it to the MATILDA SOCIAL CENTRE, 111, Matilda Street, (The old tall warehouse building opposite the closed up Matilda pub). You can contact them through their email list at: https://lists.aktivix.org/mailman/listinfo/matilda Hope that may be of help.
  4. I'm Sheffield's best known Drag Queen. I can sing, mime to classic songs, dance and do comedy; I also do some DJ-ing (Mostly 1980's avang garde electronica -Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, etc). I would be happy to offer a special rate for customers in Sheffield. Please note: I am already booked for some dates in June, but PM me with the date you have in mind, if interested. Tyranna, THE Sheffield Drag Queen!
  5. "be pleased for gods sake. compared to most cities sheffields gay scene is hopeless and the backbiting and namecalling among the community doesn't help. its about time the city got a decent scene" Thanks, Discodown and Sexy 90210, your messages get to the point perfectly! The MORE Gay venues, and 'Gay Nights' at mainstream Venues there are, the BETTER it is for all; not just the LGBT Community, but for a more integrated scene as a whole. For those who havent been to Dempseys for a while, I must say that I was knocked back with a feather when they unveiled the new-look upstairs for the first time -It is FABULOUS! a huge bar, stylish wall decor, new floor, and of course the cage! Now, all that is needed is, yes, to do something about the downstairs; Oh, and the staircase as well; also the Cocktail Bar could do with a new look to match the main upstairs room. Still, with the downstairs, I like the large telly they now have for the Karaoke, and the better chairs they got about a year ago, but the rest of the furniture downstairs looks grim. The food, though, both in range, and in availability (You can order food until VERY late) is fantastic, and that is one of the main selling points of Dempseys during the daytime! Perhaps the most immediate priority would be to do something about the very dated signs outside and the dirty grey shutters which are closed early in the evening for security; How about painting them with Rainbow colours of something? 6. I'll make sure I get to the Grand Reopening on the 26th! I'm intrigued by the mirrors in the toilets, though; I'll probably miss them, as I generally use the Powder Room (The Ladies')!
  7. I am an archaeology graduate who did my MA at Sheffield University, and yes, there is little in the way of Roman sites immediately in Sheffield. About the only standing monument is the Templeborough hillfort, which goes back to at least the Pre-Roman Iron Age if not earlier. It is interesting that a Roman farm site is known in Fulwood, as the name Fulwood is very close to the Latin word 'Fullo' meaning one who washes or processes cloth. Perhaps the name does go back to Roman times, and there was some kind of wool-processing going on in the area. To the south of Sheffield, it is known that there was a substantial stone-walled fort at Chesterfield, where the Church with teh bent spire now stands. This fort was called Caesaromagus, and would have had some kind of civilian British settlement on the slopes below. Maybe Sheffield had some minor Roman or Saxon settlement around the High Street, but searches on sites whenever a development takes place have never really found anything of substance. By the late Norman times, however, we get evidence of the castle, located around the Castle Markets area, and a fragment of the 13th century structures of the castle (part of a gate) is preserved somewhere in the Market basements.
  8. For fit (gay) male staff, try Fuel. They also double as dancers, sometimes joining hands on top of the bar-counter at the end of the night!!
  9. Is it Gay-Friendly? Might it be interested in holding an occasional 'Gay Night'? I'm asking this because I'm one of Sheffield's best known Drag Queens -Tyranna Sore-Ass Wrecked-, and I'd be quite happy to entertain people if Sharkeys were into the idea of a drag cabaret! Anyhow, would Sharkeys be ok about me popping in for a casual drink in drag, as I often dress as a girl when out on the town, even if i am not doing cabaret that night!?
  10. What times is DNR open? I've been past there on Monday to Wednesday after 10pm when leaving work, and there doesen't seem to be any sign of life! Does it only open Fri/Sat/Sun? And while we're on the subject, is it true DNR hosts a 'fetish'/bondage theme night every month, and does anyone have more details of times and dates????
  11. Hello all, and Hello DJ Scott! Are you the same DJ Scott who does Climax and Fairy Liquid? It's good to see you on this forum. I've only just signed up, and people might recognise me as the Sheffield Drag Queen. Yes, the Parkway is (the only one of 4 pubs) still open in Park Hill, and it looks rough, but I'd say the vast majority of the crowd there are OK! Haven't been there in ages though -occasionally they might have a special event with some kind of finger food laid on. I don't know how much longer Parkway will be open; the flats are being cleared of tenants in phases -Phases 1 & 2 at the lower end are almost totally empty-, but Phase 3 where the pub is, and 4&5 are still fairly populated. God knows what Parkhill will be like after the refurb, but it would be nice to still have the odd traditional pub, and also affordable rents and prices for flats!!!!
