  1. What does a nightclub mean to its city? With aggressive redevelopers and increasing rents contributing to a continued fall in the number of nightclubs and music venues across the UK, these havens of creativity and hedonism are becoming more and more precious to those who frequent them. Sheffield is no stranger to exciting, forward thinking nightlife, but neither is it immune to their myriad threats. For many dance music fans who have lived in Sheffield over the years, there is one particular closure which is pulling heavily on their heartstrings: that of DLS, or has it has later been known, The Night Kitchen. Over the past few months, as part of my MA, I have been collecting photographs and images of the venue from across its history to exhibit as part of a small display. But as well as viewing photos from the site’s past, it will also be an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on what you would prefer to see this industrial den become in the future. Jessop West Foyer 12th and 13th July 10am – 4pm
  2. Can you help? I am a student enrolled on the MA Public Humanities course at the University of Sheffield and as part of my dissertation I want to look at how The Night Kitchen/DLS fits into the wider historical, cultural and industrial landscape of Sheffield. As part of my dissertation I hope to put on a small exhibition at The Night Kitchen documenting its history from cutlery factory to nightclub and beyond. As part of the exhibition I would like to feature interviews, quotes and anecdotes from those involved in its story as well as photographs of the space as it changed into a nightclub that I, and many like me, hold very dear. The exhibition will serve as a location to gather testimonies from previous patrons to find out why the space meant so much to people and how important they think the re-using and re-imagining of a city's industrial heritage is. To help with the exhibition I’m looking for: Photos Old event posters Testimonies Stories Quotes If you would be willing to help with any of the items above, I would be grateful if you would contact me at: [email protected]. I really hope to hear from you.
