We get new people in every week and we have all had to walk through the door for the first time 👍 If u dont want to talk, thats absolutely fine. No-one will force you or think badly about it. part of the problem is that men have always been told to ‘man up’ etc. But like everyone else we have thoughts and feelings too. where is your nearest club?

I have a mate that prefers cash. I guess m just echoing what others have said. Times have changed, the demographic for spenders is weighted towards the younger generation that spend the most. It always has been. Those that will only use cash are ‘acceptable losses’. People are more spontaineous these days and not having enough cash is not a chance a retailer wants to take for you not spending. To a degree Covid halped the cashless society. Thats the only way we could spend. Cash is dirty !

I think standards in shops and food outlets have dropped generally. I think there are a few reasons for it. Although i dont necessairly agree with them all. The two biggest costs to a business are usually staff and premesis. Less staff, more profit - or at least less loss in some cases. More and more shops seem to prefer bigger queues and less open tills (forgetting and self serve ones). Generally as a society, we just stand in the queue, grumble and pay. Not often we vote with our feet. Customer service is something thrown about all over the place, but its not whet it used to be. Often the assistants are youngsters who have grown up in a world of bad service and not caring. This is what they are used to and this is how they are. Food outlets serving tepid ‘hot’ food, thrown together and we just pay up and eat it. There dont seem to be enough people that will do anything about it, so it will continue…..

I used to love the Xmas season. But these days ive had enough by the time its actually here because we’ve had 3 or 4 months of it!

I have been going to AMC for about 18 months now. I became a Facilitator about a year ago, which just means i help to run the evening. I was at the Beighton group up until recently when the Chesterfield club opened at the football ground. I help out there now. Like others have said, hardest part is walking through the door. People from all walks of life attend and are all treated the same. Anyone still not sure, feel free to PM me if u want any more info 👌

I work just round the corner from Meadowhall, and walk there every lunchtime. I’ve seen it taking shape over the last couple of weeks. There are some fairground rides, and an ‘aqua splash’ apparently. Think its £2.50 entry, and then u buy tickets at £1 each, rides are something like 3 to 5 tickets each.

The most fascinating thing I noticed about this, is the fact that there is no mention of toys on the frontage !

I say keep it. Its part of our history now. Its an interesting building to look at. Never been inside, but surely it can be turned into something else.dont like the idea of potentially more high rise buildings being put there instead……

Agreed, often if you leave it clear, someone else will do it instead. However, one people start getting fined / points, im sure that will change…

Personally, if you break a law / rules whilst driving, then why shouldn’t you be fined. I’m sick of not being able to get somewhere because someone else is parked in a yellow box junction. The police are clearly not able to catch this kind of thing, why shouldn’t the council be able to do something. If it keeps the roads clearer / safer. Another added benefit would also be more money in the coffers.

The short answer is yes. However, there are reasons why that is. Which understandably lots of people disagree with. What you have to remember is that charities are essentially a business. They are there to make money. Every successful business on the planet has someone at the top that has the right skills and acumen to be able to ‘steer’ that business in the right direction to be able to make that money. They also often have connections that us meer mortals don’t. Those positions rightly or wrongly command a high salary. Although I don’t believe that they are as high as other sectors at the same level. The paradox is that as a Charity grows, it needs more people to run it. You get to a point whereby the roles are full time, therefore most people will want paying, then you need offices etc. Which means the bigger you get, the more it costs to run the Charity. This is a simplified explanation. There are as with anything exceptions to that rule i’m sure. Smaller local Charities generally are able to give more to the ‘end users’. But sadly by their nature, are also only able to give smaller amounts.

The charity bag should have the charity reg number on it - which can easily be checked online. Although that doesn’t mean that if they aren’t really from that charity, that they haven’t done their homework and printed it on. I guess its possible that the bags are stored there, then collected from their at another time? Ive worked in the Charity sector for a few years - not for a particular Charity. There are pros and cons to supporting say a big one over a local small one. The thing to do is a bit of homework to find out how much of your pound actually gets to where it’s needed……

I’m not sure most programms set in yesteryear are billed as being historically accurate to be fair. It’s just entertainment. Witch finder mentioned by the OP is a tongue in cheek comedy.

I think most modern freezers are OK to keep the contents frozen for at least 12 hours without power - and assuming you dont keep opening the door to check !

I remember a place on the Moor that only sold denim stuff. It was next to the doorway down to the old Zing Vaa Chinese. What was that called?

As a teenager, and tea boy (yes it was actually one of my jobs) I often had to pop to the shops to get milk to make the 20 odd brews twice a day…… Anyhow, I had the usual ‘long wait’, and ‘left handed spanner’ (these do exist, but that’s another story..), gags, which I was wise to. One I hadn’t heard of at the time was a bubble for a spirit level - which the Foreman smirkingly asked for one day as I headed out for more milk - he even gave me a fiver to pay for it. Half an hour later in the snap cabin where we were all eating lunch, the foreman shouts over, ‘Hey, did you get the bubble I asked for??. This was quickly followed by sniggers from lots of the lads. Until I handed him a blown up plastic bag I’d tied up - ‘Yup, here you go, they only had large’ I said. The place erupted with laughter, the foreman sat down sheepishly, and he let me keep the fiver !

As a teenager in the ‘80s I worked in Chesterfield for a while, at the same place as my Dad. My Dads nickname was Dee Dah, because they said us Sheffielders spoke ‘funny’. My Dad has never spoken with what could be called a stereo typical or ‘old fashioned’ Yorkshire accent, but there you go! My nickname was Doo Dah lol

There were signs up the other year about M&S on Fargate having toilets for public use - not that they would know. The Millennium Gallery have free toilets. These days I think there’s really only the Market on the Moor now with loos - maybe Atkinsons?
