  1. Sir Michael Caine ( Maurice Micklewhite) was born in Rotherhithe, London, which is south of the Thames, so not a 'Cockney' but portrayed them perfectly.
  2. The Victory was actually ON Upwell Steet (Grimesthorpe), closed as a cinema-i think- in 1957.
  3. Derek Dooley era song (according to my late dad) and the Owls had proper stripes then.
  4. Beighton is in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Eckington is in NE Derbyshire. Don't both local council's have a say in this?
  5. I think in late 50s early 1960s. there was a small snooker hall in that W&G building,
  6. That's the Lion behind the road sign ((Nursery Street), not sure what the former Williams & Glynns bank became.
  7. At this rate, perhaps some in the Indian sub-continent will object to Hull City FC's nickname.
  8. Yes Jim, I think the term 'Oriental' is just to be used as a geographical reference (say's whom?). Where does that leave our red shirted footballing friends from Leyton, London? And they- now Native Americans- can't refer to white men as palefaces anymore. And if they do, who's gonna dare to shut them up?
  9. Irene: Some of those people have never been -after school days - in a gym, anymore than they could they spell it!

Perhaps because the specials went via Neepsend Lane and Penistone Road on the way to...yes....Owlerton? Perhaps a Tory MP then Jim?
  11. When I first went in Gun, early 1966, on Friday and Saturday nights there was not a badly dressed customer in there , even had a Tuxedoed white gloved waiter! (well, best room the one on the right), men in suits and ties and no Demin in sight. It was a 'Free house' then and one choice they had was Newcastle Brown on draught. All of that not bad for a Sheffield 3 pub.
  12. In it's heyday the Gun was one of the best pubs (drinks, customers and furnishings). The best times for me was when Ken Cooney was owner/landlord. I think moved to Dore around 1987 but I had moved away from Sheffield by then.
  13. As of the Wicker, the Big Gun pub offficially closes this weekend.
  14. Correct PRESLEY ! David Niven was Scottish... but anyway...
  15. Wasn't Winnie 'Gin soaked' for about 16 hours a day for most of his adult life?
  16. She was so good that some adorer's can't spell her name right.
  17. What about when Churchill was Home Secretary and ordered soldiers to open fire in striking Welsh miners? Not so 'fine' then!
  18. Agreed but Nye Bevan was Welsh, maybe we can invite him into the club ? Along with Scottish doctor Sir Alexander Fleming, the penicillin guy.
  19. Frank and Colin? Esquire/ Club 60 ?
