  2. West Indies handed the first one-day international to England when coach John Dyson beckoned the batsmen to accept the bad light decision and come off the field. Dyson thought his calculation was correct but he was on solitary ground. Sky and the officials had it correct and England had gone ahead on the back of a late wicket. The WI had been nudging the umpires, shaking their heads, peering their eyes at what were gloomy conditions when ten runs or so, in hand, but the late wicket changed all that and Dyson failed to take it on board! http://www.sportinglife.com/cricket/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=cricket/09/03/20/CRICKET_England.html http://www.sportinglife.com/cricket/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=cricket/09/03/20/CRICKET_England_Quotes.html Rule rethink? http://www.sportinglife.com/cricket/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=cricket/09/03/21/CRICKET_England_Strauss.html Cash dispute threatens games - http://www.sportinglife.com/cricket/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=cricket/09/03/21/CRICKET_West_Indies_Dispute.html

  7. Some good material there SSB. I never bought-in to rivalries and 'auld enemies' - I think it's something the media likes to use to spice-up a few bigots. I thought there was a good relationship between the management and teams at Sheffield and Belle Vue; the use of riders, any crisis or late fixture and they'd help one another out. The two tracks were as you say, quite comparable and Belle Vue often hosted the Provincial League Riders' Championship. I was at Wembley in 1962 to see Craven win the World title. It was the icing on the cake as I'd been at Highbury in the afternoon to see Wednesday win 2-1, the last time they won there! It was an exciting night at Wembley and 'the north' were all behind Peter. It wasn't long afterwards that he was tragically killed - I'm sure I shed a tear when I heard the devastating news. * Silver Sash - Just a few of names I was surprised to see missing from the Sash list - Tony Lewis, Harry Bastable and Tommy Sweetman but I guess it was a case of how the cookie crumbled on the night/fixtures etc. They may well have done at some other stage? Graham Warren, a name that had escaped my memory - excellent!
  8. http://manchesterhistory.net/bellevue/Aces.html Nostalgia but not Sheffield's so I offer you a historical review of Belle Vue speedway on here. The Aces have certainly used some talented riders over the years and several came across to Owlerton to help the Tigers.
  9. Just checked out one of my favourites in that list - Soren Sjosten - whom I looked up and learned he had died ten years ago. Where does time go? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%B6ren_Sj%C3%B6sten Another Belle Vue rider Tommy Roper, was another Aces's rider who gave solid service to Sheffield and to Halifax.
  10. One of Wigan's favourite daughters but I'd prefer the local Mint Balls or the JJB. Hard faced? http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00513/SNN2105D-280_513322a.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1323094.ece&usg=__qyEwlzq9BNSIiXKjWbvVoBzEPd4=&h=390&w=280&sz=36&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=7LEl5FGlPgyn_M:&tbnh=123&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dkay%2Bburley%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox%26sa%3DX%26um%3D1
  11. http://www.motorsport-fanatic.co.uk/speedway-parker.htm In the above link, it mentions the Golden Helmet I had mentioned in (30) and Parker repelled 19 challengers when he held the title.
  12. Yes, It was the Provincial League equivalent of The Golden Helmet of the National League. The holder would defend it against the top scorer of their opponents in a three-way match race, after the team fixture had concluded.
  13. http://www.speedwayinfo.co.uk/ 'fraid I'm a man of the past. 1981 - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/article669086.ece The last time the World Final was held at Wembley. What a wonderful night to savour. I worked for Norwegian TV (NRK) from the Wembley press box and the atmosphere was electric. Press had to leave the stadium to go round to the famous tunnel to get to the interview rooms - something I'd never experienced previously. Just for good measure, I'd had sizeable bets on Penhall after noting his modus operandi (and team, and bikes) earlier in the season at Owlerton. Sheffield riders would have 'died' for his third bike! What a talent that man was, looks to kill as well. The two sad memories from that; two of the interviewees that night were soon to be faced with personal tragedies - Kenny Carter (family shootings) and Erik Gundersen who several years later suffered partial paralysis in a crash. I had been to the Wembley World Finals of 1962 and 63 but circumstances of 1981 made it an emotional and unforgetable evening as speedway at Wembley was kicked out on a high!
  14. Tuesday night's Trainer's Championship at Sheffield was won in sensational style by Charlie Lister who now has six winners and a runner-up from his seven runners. On a track that is clearly on fire, another four track records were broken including the 500m figure which fell twice and is now with Thurlesbeg Joker (28.50secs). Ninja Jamie had set new figures of 28.70 earlier in the night and Farloe Reason nearly lowered the clock for a third time with 28.53 success in the 9.45.

  16. SINGLES' NIGHT! - Monday 8th June This was initiated last year at an afternoon meeting and was an "unqualified success" such that this year it is to be held at an evening meeting. It works as follows with stickers; red, orange and green. It is basically an ice-breaker with RED signifying "not interested", Orange - "might be persuaded" and GREEN saying "open to offers". The racecourse does not provide rooms! Aware of the financial climate, Pontefract will not be increasing admission charges this season. First meeting Tuesday 7th April.

  19. Thanks but it's okay. I don't bet so it's not that vital except the dogs racing will be better than normal at Owlerton. I can watch it around the match and might catch a race itself while there's a soccer injury. The races usually go off on time. I just thought the quality was worthy of bringing it to the locals' attention.
  20. Pity and more so that you only went once. Those were good times for Poole after the Knott family took over and they won the Provincial League title in 1961 and 1962 - helped by the two previous names and also Ross Gilbertson and Geoff Mudge.
  21. Dare I ask the year? Tony Lewis, Ken Middleditch, Pirates of the 60s?
  22. I like people and sportspersons who are good at their jobs, know what they are doing, are reliable and deliver preferably without histrionics! Robinson would have come into those categories. I had a look back at the extended link and you were right, very few people mentioned him which is why I posted the 'maximum' to back up your point. I found Provincial League a pale shadow of the National League performers but Tony could more than hold his own in that sphere (Belle Vue).
  23. There you have it, a Robinson maximum! http://www.sheffield-tigers.co.uk/stokepl23071960.html
  24. Good point. 7.30pm-10pm. I will see some but expect to be watching the Hull cup-tie on Setanta.
