  1. This puggie is true I has always baffled me as to why most other UK cities have a network of arterial routes heading out of the City Centre in most directions, yet Sheffield only has a few routes that are capable of managing heavy loads of rush hour traffic. Factor in that we really only have a partial ring road as such and it is no real shock that we have such bad rush hour traffic and incidents such as today. I have lived in other cities through work and commutes of 20 miles have taken far less time than a 5 mile commute into central Sheffield.
  2. Today's chaos needs to be addressed by the SCC traffic management and planning boards because it is a clear example of how our main arterial routes through the city just aren't good enough. A couple of incidents in various places outside of the City Centre have literally crippled Sheffield through a 6-8 mile radius, it simple is not good enough by any standards.
  3. I seem to remember similar being daubed across the windows of McDonalds restaurant a couple of years ago by so called activists. Is they care so much about the planet, surely there has to be a better way of protesting than this. I mean each to their own, they are entitled to have an opinion however they need to respect that others don't share the same opinion and somehow find a peaceful median.
  4. Hi there. This question would be better asked in the Storrs and Dungworth group on Facebook. Will most certainly be somebody on there who can answer.
  5. Is this the extent of the pettiness surrounding Sheffield footballing rivalry? Akin to my Grandsons stories of schoolyard antics. You don't even have to be an avid football supporter but only following the national media to see that this sort of behaviour seems to have resurfaced from the plague that it was several decades ago and is heading towards an epidemic. I must have seen several incidents in the last couple of weeks alone. I read in the local chip paper that both Sheffield clubs seem to be outdoing themselves in the arrest stakes. Nothing that a few prison sentences and lifetime bans wouldn't sort out. Idiots.
  6. I am 100% behind the Yorkshire devolution movement personally. The handling of the HS2 alone is a clear indication of how little the powers that be care about anything north of Birmingham. As the biggest county in England and a key tourism spot in the UK, we should be governing ourselves and acting in our own interest.
  7. I can't help but think about the clean up efforts afterwards as well. I know that Devonshire Green and the surrounding areas have been left in a bit of a mess "post tramlines" in the past however the brilliant City Centre cleaning teams have cracked on and had it all clean in no time at all. Would SCC simply divert all City Centre staff to Hillsborough in order to clean up afterwards? I suppose that on the other hand, our parks are used to hosting large scale shows and events therefore they would be able to handle it quite adequately?
  8. Until the ashes are on and then suddenly all football fans pretend to be die hard fans. Cricket is a fantastic sport and with cheaper prices for a whole days viewing it offers far superior value for money.
  9. I just paid marginally less than £42 for a full day of International test cricket at Headingley. More fool football fans I say.
  10. Switching to 2 year courses is a fantastic idea as Kate said however i'm not sure how feasible this would be in Sheffield, what with the majority of the courses here now being specialist medical, sports and engineering degrees obviously. I would imagine that most of these would have to remain as three year courses. With partnerships with the likes of Boeing, McLaren, Rolls Royce and Siemens amongst others at Sheffield University alone, things are most definitely on the up and I feel that as a result, demand will only surely increase?
  11. Of course the building of such accommodation may have positive effects elsewhere in the city? These "all in" apartments provide modern accommodation within a stones throw of most university buildings. With "socialising" also featuring high on the agenda of a good few students, it must also be rather appealing to have so much to do on their doorsteps as well?. Back in my Uni days, these sorts of apartments tended to be for first years however these days they are more than popular with all students of all stages. Maybe providing more of these types of properties will free up some of the multi-person occupancy houses that would otherwise be used as student lettings? This could possibly help boost the local housing market as a whole?
  12. Well there is one thing for certain, whether this person was a desperate individual or not. Such foolish actions as these guarantee one outcome of at least several years rent free accommodation (At her majesty's pleasure).
  13. With several further proposals in place to build large scale student developments in and around Sheffield city centre, it seems that this is the way that things are heading. With plenty of affordable former works and such available for the right price and the yield on student properties no doubt being significant, it is hardly surprising to see not only local developers, but national developers and even Chinese developers keen to invest on student housing within the city centre. (I'm not for one minute saying that this is a bad thing by the way, after all the universities are hugely important in regards to boosting the economy within Sheffield) I am beginning to wonder if the council are open to such planning proposals as they feel that this could be a contributing factor towards the success of The Moor developments?
  14. Am I the only one who is becoming a little uncomfortable by the whole state of affairs? As if it wasn't bad enough that a couple of potential "loose cannons" have been testing one and others patience, you now have the added worry of the possible involvement of the likes of China and Russia. I see Switzerland have now offered to act as some sort of mediation in order to try and restore calm.
  15. A few years ago I used to indulge in the odd beverage at The Red Lion on Charles Street. In this time I became friendly with several other patrons, one of which worked up in the council building. Some of the stories he told at times astonished me, the number of threats that staff have against them you would not believe. It doesn't surprise you in the slightest that these places tend to have glass partitions to protect the staff.
  16. This will most probably be the pair of postboxes immediately below the school, opposite the junction with Broomgrove Road. Finding a place to pull up may well prove to be a pain as it is always heaving on this road.
