What happened to the posts about Manor Social Club having problems with CIU?. I was going to add a thread but the whole lot seems to have disappeared.

My gran, Florence Beck, lived in Attercliffe all her life before dying at age 74 in 1960. She lived on Coleridge Rd, opposite Gutsons shop and Kings chippy. She referred to city centre as 'Sheffield' but i don't think she ever went there, you could get all you needed down the 'cliffe.

When I was a nipper (many years ago), my dad took me to Ripon Street, Attercliffe, to show me where he was born. We then walked towards what is now the parkway to a spot where there were a few isolated terraces of houses. My dad called it the indian village, he also showed me a tip that was steaming and smoking, he said it was burning underground and had been there for years. He referred to the whole area as Corker Bottom.Does anyone remember this place and can tell me it's approximate location in relation to somewhere identifiable?

Does anyone remember a pub at the bottom end of St.Mary Rd? It was on a corner, down from Royal Standard on the other side. I seem to remember that it's name had military connotations. please can anyone confirm the pub name? I remember the pub from the 1960s when I was at Granville College

Castle House Co-op Department Store
Billy Sugger replied to OllyC's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
thanks, I went to the thread you sent. Believe me it really happened, I was there. I just managed to run outside before I was sick!. I would put it a bit earlier than 1965 though. -
Castle House Co-op Department Store

When I was a kid,(early 60s ish) I remember being in Castle House co-op dept. store. I was standing by the lift at the bottom of the big spiral staircase when I heard screaming and glass smashing, then a child landed on the floor in the centre of the staircase onto a pile of broken glass. It appears that the child must have climbed over the banister rail and fallen through the cascade of lights that went down the middle of the stairs. It was terrible. Does anyone know what happened to that poor child? -

Butchers shop recommendations
Billy Sugger replied to Astraeus's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Are there any real pork butchers left locally? I used to enjoy proper polony but the last time I was able to get anything decent was in the old market.Sadly the stall does not appear to have transferred to that awful new place up the moor. Does anyone know where I can get proper polony, not this bright red plastic matteson type stuff? -
Big houses on queen mary road, manor
Billy Sugger replied to Billy Sugger's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Many thanks sweetcheeks, They are definitely the ones I remember (the flat roof reference was obviously those little towers at the front, as kids we always imagined them as being very 'posh'. it's a pity they didn't build the whole estate like that. -
when I lived on Scotia Drive in the 50s and 60s, there were two houses which were shrouded in mystery. As you go up Wulfric Rd from city Rd, get to junction with Queen Mary Rd and turn left towards Scotia Drive, there were two houses on the left. They were bigger than surrounding houses and appeared to be flat roofed. They also had a round window to the front. They were totally out of character with the area and despite living close to them ,I never saw the occupants. I saw them again a few years ago, maybe they are still there. Does anyone know anything about them?

Prince Edward School, 1940/50/60s
Billy Sugger replied to bushbaby 3's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Prince Edwards Junior school @ Elm Tree Sheffield. I was there about 1950 to 1955. Mr. Cross headmaster. I remember Miss Pilgrim (teacher), Molly Evans, Valerie Northall, Joan Page, David Frisby, Willie Windle Michael Hill, Tony Andrews. My mum (Mrs.Hartley) was teachers assistant there a few years after I left. Ring any bells? -
The gents were downstairs, circular floor area, quite large and with lots of space. The outer walls were W.Cs and the urinals formed a circle in the middle. The flushlng system for the urinals consisted of a large circular glass tank situated about eye level with lots of water in it. It also had several large goldfish in who seemed quite happy, the water level only dropped a few inches when it flushed. The other thing about the toilets was the fact that it's shape and high ceiling gave it superb accoustics, a local barber shop quartet used to practice in there (as well as a few drunks)
