Every time I drive down this road, I am astonished as to how wide it is when you include the grass verges … does anybody know why it is like this? I realise it’s been around for a long time … and originally a Lane … but that doesn’t explain anything to me.

Cheers Hillsboro ... ... since entering my post, I’ve realised that I knew that Roselle Street, in Hillsborough, was re-named from Rose Street. I have also ‘learned’ that the catalyst for these changes is when the area of Hillsborough was absorbed into Sheffield City ... from the West Riding Council. Sounds feasible.

Does anybody have any information or pictures of the MUNITIONS SCRAP YARD at Grenoside. This was located on the same ‘footprint’ as the ‘new’ Crematorium ... well it was new in 1999. Old maps show the site had a number of buildings / huts linked by, what looks like, curved trenches.

Whilst looking at some old maps of the Wadsley area ... specifically those behind the Church ... I’ve noticed that most of their names changed. On an OS map dated 1888 - 1913 compared to current, the situation is Airedale Road ... was Argyle Road Milden Road ... was Miller Road Marlcliffe Road ... was Marlborough Avenue ** Vainor Road ... was Vicarage Road ** This road was the only one showing actual houses ... a small terrace near to the Langsett Road end. No sign of the School. Grove Avenue and Don Avenue didn’t change. Worral Road is shown as Church Lane Laird Road is shown as Crabtree Lane. Any ideas ?

I'm wanting to update some Geograph information about an old house on Skew Hill in Grenoside ... and have been told that a Frank Goddard lived there with his wife, and was a Coalman. Does anybody have any memories or history of Frank Goddard ?

Good story Arfer … certainly the 1905 map shows the CCDH site to be undeveloped.

Looking at the Picture Sheffield examples of Jessop Hospital on the Leavygreave Road site ... There are some which show a Covered Bridge between the original buildings and a more modern mystery building to the left. The bridge is at first floor level. The clearest picture is dated 1994 ref s23436 The plasticky looking Jessop West building is now on the site of the mystery building. Does anybody know what this building was? Another picture shows an Ante-Natal Clinic on this site but this looks to have been an earlier building. This picture is dated 1971 ref s23424 Thanks

I test that the Sewer Gas Destructor Lamp on Leavygreave Road, next to the original Jessop Hospital building will remain ... ... Forever 'cocking a snook' at the new Engineering Block.

Hi … thanks for the reply but the building I am talking about isn't honey coloured. Despite being built in the mid 1960s it is a modern looking glass and concrete type job.

Hi … On Netherthorpe Road, next to the Shell Garage is a one storey building called Netherthorpe House. The NHS' Department of Social Care currently use this building as part of their Art Therapy Programme. For some reason I remember this building being called or used by a company called Escafeld … possibly as a Food Wholesalers? Can anybody confirm this … or have any other memories of it … or has it always been part of the NHS As always … thanks in anticipation

Hello and thanks for the replies … I have now had a look at (and taken some photographs of) the pub on the corner of Wood Street and Langsett Road … and, although now called The Hillsborough Hotel, it was originally called the Wellington Inn. Indeed this name is carved in stone above the double doors on Langsett Road. Because of its location I m assuming that this was the 'Top Wellie' I have posted the photographs on the Geograph web-site and linked them to the 'Bottom Wellie'

I notice the sign on the side of The Wellington at Shalesmoor describes it as the 'Bottom Wellie' ... ... Which would indicate that there is a 'Top Wellie' somewhere. Any ideas where?

Hi … Does anybody have any memories of the HSBC - former Midland Bank - building on Hoyle Street. I think it was built on the site of the former Daniel Doncaster Company? I think (again) it is a call centre now but … when was it built and what was it originally for? Thanks in anticipation Tezden

Hi ... The Joseph Kay Almshouses in Stannington are shown as being in Ivy Road on the 1902 map. Howver this road is now known as Ivanhoe Road. Does anybody know why the name was changed ... and when?

I recently queried JHSR Terminus Market on Middlewood Road at Hillsborough and received a superb reply fom Hillsbro explaining that the initials stood for John H S Randall, who lived next door to the shops at 349 Middlewood Road and built the Terminus Market Parade. I was alo contacted by John Randalls great great granddaughter - Aprilshowers - who confirmed that 349 Middlewood Road is named Rand House ... and it is and I've put some photos on Geograph showing this. Aprilshowers also thinks that there are Manhole Covers with the initials J.H.S.R. on them in the Sheffield area ... Does anybody know of any?
