i've been thinking about this for a while now! - but before i reach a decision i need to spend a good few days/weeks/years drinking and comparing lots of different beers. i've got off to a solid start, but i'm nowhere near the end of this journey, it's just too early to say)

would you describe the Farmers protests as "Whinging" ? Liz Webster - founder of 'Save British Farming' (leading/representing the protests) : "They negotiated trade deals which literally see us slaughtered - They're the worst trade deals in the world." “We need a radical change of policy and an urgent exit from these appalling trade deals which will decimate British food.” -

That prat Mogg : 2016: "The Brexit opportunity is through leaving the customs union. And that means we have to come out of the EU Single Market" 2024: "Anything that makes trade more difficult, makes countries poorer" i'm very much in danger of typing asterisks again. -
This should surprise no-one at all - who can afford kids these days?

well, exactly. if we keep on prioritising cars, we're going to keep on getting more and more cars - it's a game that we simply cannot win. no city has ever fixed congestion by making it easier to drive - most have tried, most are still trying, with a 100% failure rate - it's literally *never* worked, anywhere, ever.
-
i have to drive along Abbeydale road at least once a week, it's been a nightmare for years. best case scenario : opening a few side roads might help a *bit* (maybe?), but given the relentless rise in congestion it would only buy us a few years (and then we'd also have side roads full of cars) worth noting : The Nether edge filter on Archer Lane has been permanently removed - traffic is still awful. And the Little London Road filter was removed for a few days (before Christmas?) - the taxis and delivery drivers soon found it! - and traffic was still awful.

No - the graph is evaluating 'share' not 'amount'. in the last 10 years, the number of cars has gone up from about 30million, to 33million. www.statista.com what's hidden in that number, is that some (many?) cars are effectively empty - driving to, or returning from, dropping off a family member. how many car journeys are made ferrying teenage kids around? - only to temporarily return home, effectively empty. (4 car journeys, to move 1 person to and from 1 destination)

urban 20 zones reduce fuel consumption - it's physics. 1 unit of fuel will accelerate a car to 20mph. another whole unit of fuel is required to accelerate from 20-30. (KE = ½ MV^2) when we consider aerodynamic drag, accelerating to 30 burns more than twice as much fuel vs 20. given that we're talking about urban 20 zones, this extra fuel is completely wasted when the car decelerates/stops for the next junction/ lights/ queue.

Is There To Be A Scc Asset Fire Sale?
ads36 replied to Baron99's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
they have to. This year (2024) they have a balanced budget - for which i think they deserve a lot of credit. But they know they're heading for a short-fall. Funding is going down, costs are going up. The term 'fire sale' suggests selling quickly, at far below market rate, which seems unlikely. -
A) that's less than inflation. B) we have an aging population who need more care = the budget needs to increase by *more* than inflation.

The government are telling us that tax-cuts are the way to generate growth. i suspect the answer lies in less exciting ideas : improving public transport, reducing the cost of childcare... etc. where did *that* number come from?

Active Travel: How Much Is Too Much?
ads36 replied to SheffieldForum's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
i have asthma, i also live at Meadowhead. riding home from the city takes about 25mins. The uphill end of my route goes up Hutcliffe Woods, and Bocking Lane, it takes 10mins, of light-to-moderate effort. (stat-nerds : heart rate of about 110, with a max of about 170) most people should find this easy (easier than i do, certainly). -

understandably, people complain about congestion. we've been prioritising driving for 70+ years = as a result traffic levels have risen (doubled in the last 40yrs), and are continuing to rise. Ignoring rising traffic levels definitely won't fix it, we need better alternatives. continuing to prioritise driving definitely won't fix it, we need better alternatives. ... it simply isn't possible to build / widen enough roads to beat congestion, every city has tried, with a 100% failure rate. ... -
yes, it's clearly very important that we keep paying him £8000/month (+ expenses) for another 10 months.

Transforming Travel In The City Centre

I'm happy to finally see the new plans for the city centre, they've been delayed for years. They're a bit less ambitious than originally suggested - but that's inflation for you. -

The company that ran them said Sheffield had very high usage. unfortunately, also, very high rates of vandalism. -
This kind of development is what's led me to my current position - that we should be building more houses to expand existing villages. We need communities that are big enough to support existing schools, shops, pubs, etc. NOT tiny isolated developments with none of the above. (people with exploding heads in 3, 2, 1...)

it wasn't a *terrible* budget... (ok, it was pretty bad). but mostly, it was a massive missed opportunity to actually do something interesting/good/useful. what a waste of everyone's time - i'll try not to swear.
