  1. I've been here since sunny 1976, fell in love with the friendliness of the people the day I arrived. The sububs are brilliant, the hills add something extra special, and it has some stunning parks (that's a topic for another thread!). Culturally, the music scene has always been brilliant. And nowadays it has some of the best beers you'll find anywhere.

You'll see a lot of anti-Sheffield threads on the Forum, but that only shows most Sheffielders aren't an arrogant lot! The cityrcentre isn't the best, but as others have said, that only really matters if shopping is really really important to you. And in ten years time big city centres will seem passe as online dominates retail.

Say you're a Sheffielder by choice, not by birth. :)

  2. Yes the rumours are true Beeches of Walkley is sadly for sale, and it is for health reasons. We have shocked locals and staff by our decision but 8 years of non stop work has taken it's toll on both of us. Beeches is a good viable business and has now paid off all the start up loans and finance and makes a profit. Customers say why do we not put managers in to run the business, but if we do that then it would no longer be a profitable business. that is one of the reasons I am urging people to shop local, because if we could get more footfall and custom then we could pay managers to take some of our workload off us. That way we can keep the business but also have the odd holiday to rejuvenate our weary bones (nearly 9 years since our last holiday) We could also put the plans in place for post office inside, with longer hours and sunday openings, Walkley traders market and farmers market etc. I may be tired and ill but i'm still full of ideas how I can make our Walkley quarter a better place and hipster!!!

And the other rumour of us opening another butchers shop is also true, I made a decision to help a couple who I have supplied to for many years, they needed to sell for health reasons, so I take over January 1st, the butcher will be staying on as long as possible, so I will not have to put any more work hours onto my week, and spread myself even more thinly. (oh yes the new shop is on Fulwood Road Ranmoor)

Great job Chris, and thanks for all you've done for Walkley.

  3. Oh dear, surely not more foreigners coming over here. Today got off to a bad enough start, drinking from an earthernware vessel this morning. I blame those Beaker people, coming over here in 2800 BC with their damn pottery. It's spoiled my traditional English cup of tea.
